Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, achieving predictable CMYK color on press was a relatively straightforward process. All the partners in the process—photographers, designers, and printers—had clearly defined roles and responsibilities. With the introduction of Adobe Photoshop in 1990, the digital imaging revolution changed all that. Roles suddenly shifted and blurred. Standards disintegrated. The entire process quickly spiraled into a chaotic free-for-all that couldn’t help but leave everyone frustrated as they scratched their heads and wondered, “What’s wrong with my color?” CMYK 2.0: A Cooperative Workflow for Photographers, Designers, and Printers has one purpose: to get us all back on the same path to creating predictable color in the RGB-to-CMYK workflow. In a field that often features very strong—and very different—opinions, author Rick McCleary emphasizes the need for cooperation, collaboration, and communication. After first establishing a context for how we all got here, McCleary redefines each partner’s role in the process, demystifies the entire RGB-to-CMYK workflow, and offers a clear, step-by-step guide to achieving predictable color on press. Written with exceptional clarity, CMYK 2.0 presents a highly detailed and thoroughly rigorous approach to CMYK color, and it offers a workflow that all photographers, designers, and printers need—one that works. The book's companion website provides a collaborative forum of growing resources and information on all things CMYK.

We have more and better tools for creating websites and applications that work across multiple platforms. Oddly enough, design workflow hasn't changed much, and what has changed is often for worse. Old-school workflow is simply not effective on our multiplatform web. Fixed-width Photoshop comps and overproduced wireframes are no longer the way to design for today's multi-platform web. This book provides a practical approach for "designing in the browser." It shows how to better manage client expectations and development requirements, and offers a method of design documentation.

Plus, a fiendishly effective method of merging hiraloam and conventional unsharp masking The realities—and the politics—of preparing files for commercial offset printing and how to deal with colors that are out of the press’s gamut What Camera Raw and similar acquisition modules can offer Typical problems of digital captures that were not found in the age of film— and how to correct for them

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asked by royalty to analyze why certain very expensive fabrics didn't meet expectations, a French chemist found that the dyes could not be blamed. M.E. Chevreul named the real culprit in a single paragraph-which he then expanded into a unified theory about every design discipline and, in 1839, the most ambitious and influential book ever written about color usage. Half a century later, On the Law of Simultaneous Contrast of Colors had become "the scientific foundation of Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painting," according to Johannes Itten. "It is my Bible," said Winslow Homer. Vincent van Gogh called it "a luminous theory of colors," allowing "effects so violent that the human eye can scarcely stand to look at them." Chevreul explained how and why this occurred, but he then went on to discuss how it affects and can be exploited in any artistic context. Although this book is mostly noted for its impact on painting (and by extension, photography) it culminates with a chapter labeled Ten Principles for All Forms of Visual Art. He meant it, too: he prescribes design principles for tapestries, carpets, furniture, mosaics, churches, museums, apartments, formal gardens, theaters, maps, typography, framing, stained glass, and even military uniforms. Chevreul's basic ideas were clear but his explanations of how to implement them were convoluted even in the original French. The standard English edition, the only one available in print until now, has been condemned as plodding and misleading ever since it appeared in 1854. Today, this brilliant work reappears in a lucid form that goes far beyond a "translation." Color expert Dan Margulis has rewritten obscure parts, corrected errors, updated references, commented separately when needed, and added six chapters of his own. Technology stymied Chevreul's desire for extensive color graphics. Margulis has added them: photographs, line art, and reproductions of the works of those who swore by his ideas. And, he has used his digital expertise to explain what few critics have understood about how the painters were choosing their colors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As far back as the earliest Greek temples, color has been an integral part of architecture but also one of its least understood elements. Color theory is rarely taught in architecture schools, leaving architects to puzzle out the hows and whys of which colors to select and how they interact, complement, or clash. Color for Architects is profusely illustrated and provides a clear, concise primer on color for designers of every kind. This latest volume in our Architecture Briefs series combines the theoretical and practical, providing the basics on which to build a fuller mastery of this essential component of design. A wealth of built examples, exercises, and activities allows students to apply their learning of color to real-world situations.
