Book Synopsis Studies in Malaysian Oral and Musical Traditions by : William P. Malm
Download or read book Studies in Malaysian Oral and Musical Traditions written by William P. Malm and published by U OF M CENTER FOR SOUTH EAST ASIAN STUDI. This book was released on 1974-01-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of two studies included is “Music in Kelantan, Malaysia and Some of Its Cultural Implications,” by William P. Malm. Kelantan is the northernmost province on the east coast of Malaysia. It is considered to be the most orthodox area in a nation whose state religion is Islam. At the same time it must be noted that it borders to the north with the Buddhist country of Thailand and to the west is the Malaysian province of Perak whose jungles and mountains contain many “pagan” tribal traditions. Beyond Perak is Kedah with its larger Indian and Chinese populations and to the south is Trengganu where some Indonesian traits are still to be found. It is in this context that Malm’s study of music is made. The second study is “Professional Malay Story-Telling: Some Questions of Style and Presentation” by Amin Sweeney. In view of the hitherto almost exclusive concern with the content of such tales as those of Sang Kanchil or Pak Pandir, Sweeney throws some light on the form, style, and presentation of oral Malay literature, with special reference to that class of story-telling popularly known as penglipur lara, or what Winstedt termed “folk romances.”

Book Synopsis Britain and Tibet 1765-1947 by : Julie G. Marshall
Download or read book Britain and Tibet 1765-1947 written by Julie G. Marshall and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography is a record of British relations with Tibet in the period 1765 to 1947. As such it also involves British relations with Russia and China, and with the Himalayan states of Ladakh, Lahul and Spiti, Kumaon and Garhwal, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Assam, in so far as British policy towards these states was affected by her desire to establish relations with Tibet. It also covers a subject of some importance in contemporary diplomacy. It was the legacy of unresolved problems concerning Tibet and its borders, bequeathed to India by Britain in 1947, which led to border disputes and ultimately to war between India and China in 1962. These borders are still in dispute today. It also provides background information to Tibet's claims to independence, an issue of current importance. The work is divided into a number of sections and subsections, based on chronology, geography and events. The introductions to each of the sections provide a condensed and informative history of the period and place the books and article in their historical context. Most entries are also annotated. This work is therefore both a history and a bibliography of the subject, and provides a rapid entry into a complex area for scholars in the fields of international relations and military history as well as Asian history.

Book Synopsis Modern Nepal Volume I & Ii by : D. R. Regmi
Download or read book Modern Nepal Volume I & Ii written by D. R. Regmi and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 1056 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Modern Nepal (Volume I) he has covered that era when Nepal as a state emerged in its present form around the late eighteenth century, when the small hill kingdom of Gorkha, some eighty miles west of Kathmandu, brought much of the Himalayan foothills and an adjoining stip of the North Indian plain under its control. Various small states were then merged into a nation and a different ruling dynasty took over power. The Shah dynasty began to rule and Malla dynasty rule came to an end. In describing this exciting period in Nepal s history, the author has written an account not to be missed by students and scholars of history. Modern Nepal (Volume II) describes how Gurkha armies for the first time seized territories far beyond the present-day Nepal; Nepal s entry into treaty relations with Great Britain; and how Gurkha expansion into North India led to a border war. The author has also effectively captured the struggle for power among the Nepalese nobility which culminated in the rise to political dominance of the Rana family. A true account of what went on before Nepal became a nation from an authoritative historian; this is a book which cannot be missed.
