Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Purification In the following pages it is intended to treat only of the first division of this subject, since the second covers too broad a field to bring it Within the mom of this volume. Both the kind and the amount of impurities in a polluted water affect the methods which can be employed for its purification, and this is so peculiarly true of sewage that its treatment has become an art in itself. Those waters which are to be purified for drinking purposes demand that a degree Of purity shall be produced which is not possible and usually unnecessary in the case Of sewage. The purification of the latter is, as a rule, quite incomplete as compared with that required for a safe drinking water, and obviously the Object to be attained is quite difl'erent. In the case of waters to be treated for making them suitable for steam-boiler purposes, or for general industrial uses, a slightly different Object is sought. The softening of hard waters or the removal of compounds of iron or manganese may be an integral part of the purification of a public drinking water supply, in which case it is combined with those processes utilized for making a water hygienically safe. Of course it is quite possible to carry on purification for industrial purposes independently of the more refined methods used for drinking water, and frequently this course is pursued in connection with manufacturing plants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Purification and Sewage Disposal Since the recognition of their significance in the promotion of the public health, methods of water purification and sewage disposal have earned a steadily increasing importance. Consequently, these branches of industry have enjoyed the most zealous atten tion of the scientist and of the engineer. I have endeavoured in the present monograph to give a survey, short perhaps, but as complete as possible, of the present position in regard to Water Purification and Sewage Disposal. Owing to the wide range of this subject particular processes could only be treated shortly in the space at disposal. One chapter, which is very fully treated in the present volume, though slightly elsewhere, is the disposal of industrial sewage. Many of the processes of purification are of quite recent date, and fresh experience is being obtained daily and reported upon in the most diverse publications. I have endeavoured to collect such information. In the translation some small changes and additions have been made in the chapters on sand filtration, the removal of manganese, and Travis and Emscher wells. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water, Its Impurities, Gathered From the Air and Earth: The Organisms That Grow in It, and the Modern Methods of Purification It contains also traces of nitric acid, ammonia, and carbureted hydrogen. The union of two parts of hydrogen and one of oxygen makes water. When ever the conditions are favorable for this union, water must be the result. We breathe hydrogen and oxy gen, we eat nitrogen and carbon; there results water and such other components of the body as can result from the union of H. N. O. With S. Po. C. These latter are derived from the disintegration of the foods we eat. Two clouds meet in the heavens, one charged with hydrogen, the other with oxygen. The rapid union of the H. And O. Causing friction of molecules makes the electric flash. The condensa tion of gases creates a vacuum and the surrounding air rushing in gives the thunder. The result of the union of hz-i - O gives the drops (molecules) of rain. These drops falling to the earth catch the germs float ing in the atmosphere and carry them into the soil. Does the percolation through the strata rob them of 71956 germs, and from whence are they derived? Istheir birth of air, or earth, or water? Are those float ing in the atmosphere but dried particles, preserving the potentialities of life, taken up from the earth, to be returned to it in some far off place? Are they the product of water alone, as taught in Egyptian schools, or are they the product of the combination of all, the result of natural law? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Purification of Public Water Supplies: A Comparison in Methods, Cost and Results The fact that the percentage of removal of this abnormally pol luted water is so great, indicates the most excellent results obtained by the process; and the fact that the resulting count in the ozonized water is high in this case should not detract from the method nor be discouraging to the inventor of the process, since in no case will a city be compelled to render potable a supply from such a source. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Purification Plants and Their Operation: Second Edition The second edition has been made necessary because of the advance and changes which have occurred in the technique of water bacteriology since the book was first published, because of the somewhat different viewpoint as to interpretation of bacteriological tests now held, and in order to incorporate into the instructions for the bacteriological tests certain new details and explanations which it is hoped will lead to better results from these tests in the hands of filtration plant operators. With these ends in view Chapter IV and parts of Chapter V have been entirely rewritten. it is difficult to adequately cover in the interpretation of tests in a limited space and in such a manner as to be available for non-technical men. The treatment may seem somewhat arbitrary, but it is believed that careful reading of the articles on interpretation will convince the trained bacteriologist that they are basically sound and err on the side of safety. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Filtration Works In 1839 James Simpson built a set of filters for the Chelsea Water Company at London. These filters, the first constructed for the purification of a municipal water-supply, were intended merely "to clarify the water, no investigations, at that date, having been made to determine what results, other than clarification, could be obtained by filters properly designed and operated. Twenty-seven years later Mr. James P. Kirkwood visited Europe for the city of St. Louis for the purpose of studying the methods of filtration in use abroad. On his return he submitted a report in which the filtering of the St. Louis water was recommended, following this report in 1869 with a treatise on the "Filtration of River Waters." This book contained the results of his observations and studies of thirteen filter-plants in Europe, and was the first publication to appear in English on the subject of filtration. This book was released on 2005-08-19 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing the population of the Earth with safe drinking water is one of the biggest challenges of modern society. In recognition of this problem the United Nations Organization and UNESCO declared 2003 to be the International Year of Freshwater. On November 19-22, 2003, the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on “Modern Tools and Methods of Water Treatment for Improving Living Standards” took place in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. Thirty-one participants from 15 countries including Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, UK, Ukraine, USA, and Uzbekistan attended the meeting. They discussed the scientific concepts and practical means for the solution of the complex social, economic and ecological problems associated with water purification, consumption, conservation, and protection. They also established a network of scientists and specialists to foster further collaboration and the exchange of ideas. The location of the ARW was chosen quite deliberately. The city of Dnepropetrovsk is located on the banks of the Dnieper River and it has a population of about 1. 3 million people. As it is one of the largest industrial centers, it shares all the environmental problems, which are found in the modern Ukraine. In 2001, one in seven of the water samples taken from Ukrainian industrial and drinking water supply systems did not meet sanitary-hygienic standards, and one in twelve did not meet microbiological standards.
