Book excerpt: Forests must be measured if they are to be managed and conserved properly. This book describes the essential principles of modern forest measurement, whether using simple hand-held equipment or sophisticated satellite imagery. It particularly focuses on measuring forest biomass over large forest areas, a key aspect of climate change studies, as well as the volumes of wood that are commercially available. Written in a straightforward style, it will be accessible to anyone who works with forests, from the professional forester to the layperson. It considers not only how and why forests are measured but also the scientific basis of the measurements taken.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Van Laar and Akça’s popular text book, Forest Mensuration, was first published in 1997. Like that first edition, this modern update is based on extensive research, teaching and practical experience in both Europe, and the tropics and subtropics. However, it has also been extensively revised, and now includes chapters on remote sensing and the application of aerial photographs and satellite imagery. The book assumes no advanced knowledge of statistical methods, and combines practical techniques with important historical and disciplinary context. The result is a strong balance between a handbook and a valuable reference.

Book excerpt: The new, revised edition of the standard volume on forest measurement The updated edition of this long-standing classic, Forest Mensuration, Fourth Edition, provides new, complete coverage of current measurement practices and technological applications that expand the role of forest mensuration to include monitoring forest resources. This integrated approach takes into account all the resources of a forest, including such nontimber vegetation parameters as regeneration, lesser vegetation, woody detritus, and carbon. Providing solid working knowledge of all concepts and methods, along with guidance for further study, featured material includes: * Applications of personal computers, global positioning, and GIS * Key concepts of tree-stand parameters and principles of measurement * Fundamental concepts of sampling methods * English and metric units Forest Mensuration, Fourth Edition, is a valuable resource for students in forestry and forestry-related studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an lUlffianaged woodland, forest development follows a succession of periods of undisturbed natural growth, interrupted by intermediate loss or damage of trees caused by fire or wind or other natural hazards. In a managed woodland, the most important periodic disturbances are the thinning operations, which are often carried out at regular intervals and which usually have a significant effect on the future evolution of the resource. Thus, a realistic model of forest development includes both natural growth and thinnings. The key to successful timber management is a proper understanding of growth processes, and one of the objectives of modelling forest development is to provide the tools that enable foresters to compare alternative silvicultural treatments. Foresters need to be able to anticipate the consequences of a particular thinning operation. In most cases, total timber volume is not a very appropriate measure for quantifying growth or yields, or changes caused by thinning operations. Yield in economic terms is defined by the dimensions and quality attributes of the harvestable logs, and estimating timber products is a central issue of production-oriented growth and yield research. Introduction 2 Growth modelling is also an essential prerequisite for evaluating the consequences of a particular management action on the future development of an important natural resource, such as a woodland ecosystem.
