They were often meant to express an international and in some respects apolitical modern language, but when placed in a sensitive setting or a meaningful architectural context, they were highly capable of negotiating or manipulating ideological messages. The agency of modern furniture was often less overt than that of political slogans or statements, but as the chapters in this book reveal, it had the potential of becoming a persuasive and malleable ally in very diverse politically charged arenas, including embassies, governmental ministries, showrooms, exhibitions, design schools, libraries, museums and even prisons. This collection of chapters examines the consolidating as well as the disrupting force of modern furniture in the global context between 1945 and the mid-1970s. The volume shows that key to understanding this phenomenon is the study of the national as well as transnational systems through which it was launched, promoted and received. While some chapters squarely focus on individual furniture elements as vehicles communicating political and social meaning, others consider the role of furniture within potent sites that demand careful negotiation, whether between governments, cultures, or buyer and seller. In doing so, the book explicitly engages different scholarly fields: design history, history of interior architecture, architectural history, cultural history, diplomatic and political history, postcolonial studies, tourism studies, material culture studies, furniture history, and heritage and preservation studies. Taken together, the narratives and case studies compiled in this volume offer a better understanding of the political agency of post-war modern furniture in its original historical context. Book excerpt: Grant Featherston (1922-1995) was a Melbourne based industrial designer, most well-known for his Contour series of chairs. Contours were designed and developed in the early 1950s and remain highly sought after by mid-century collectors in Australia and overseas, often fetching $10,000 or more. Featherston, later joined by his wife Mary, in fact produced hundreds of chairs, just part of an astonishingly diverse output form this Australian design partnership that has gone largely uncelebrated until now. This is the first book to celebrate the life and work of Grant Featherston and focuses on the chairs produced from 1947-1975 and presents a new biography of the designer, drawn from archival research and interviews with his peers. The 70,000 word text chronologically follows the design output. The book is extensively illustrated with over 250 beautiful photographs, including a selection from the previously unpublished personal achieve of Ian Howard (the former Managing Director of Aristoc). In 1957, Featherston was appointed chief design consultant for Melbourne based manufacturer Aristoc and spent the next thirteen years designing scores of chairs. Some models were so successful that it is highly likely that nearly all Australians have sat on at least one Featherston chair in their lives. Robin Day is probably the only other mid-century designer to achieve this level of commercial success.The Featherstons were selected by Robin Boyd to design and produce the highly successful Talking chair for the Australian Pavilion at the 1967 World Expo in Montreal. In the mid-1970s the international design community was searching for production techniques that would allow chairs to be produced as a single component, requiring little effort to upholster and minimal protection for transportation. In 1973, the Featherstons? career in chair design culminated with the release of the Numero IV, the largest single-shot injection moulded chair produced anywhere in the world. Featherston's real genius lay in his ability to develop production techniques that allowed the tiny, remote Australian market to experience the Modern look. The ingenuity required to succeed and consistently deliver successful Australian modern designs, is the real, previously untold, story revealed in this book.

This thesis will examine the furniture designed by Fred Ward (1900-1990), Fred Lowen (1919-2005), Grant Featherston (1922-1995), and Clement Meadmore (1929-2005), during this time, and will answer the question of how international design as well as Australian post-war aesthetics and society were manifested through their furniture. There has yet to be a definitive account written of the work these designers produced in the post-war era, and how Melbourne as a city responded to the emerging modernism of these designers. This thesis seeks to address this gap. It will also explore the craftsmanship of the designers, the materials and production techniques used, and the styling and marketing of the furniture. It will be shown that the majority of the furniture produced by these designers sold in large quantities and was used extensively throughout Melbourne and other cities. It will also examine the legacy of mid-century modern furniture and its resurgence in popularity in recent years.
