Alkaloids, a unique treatise featuring leaders in the field, presents both the historical use of alkaloids and the latest discoveries in the biochemistry of alkaloid production in plants alkaloid ecology, including marine invertebrates, animal and plant parasites, and alkaloids as antimicrobial and current medicinal use . Highlights include chapters on the chemical ecology of alkaloids in host-predator interactions, and on the compartmentation of alkaloids synthesis, transport, and storage. Extensive cross-referencing in tabular format makes this volume an excellent reference.

Book excerpt: The Ghanian plant Cryptolepis sanguinolenta is the source of a series of fascinating indoloquinoline alkaloids. The most unusual member of this alkaloid series was initially proposed to be a spiro nonacyclic structure, named cryptospirolepine, and was elucidated in 1993 based on the technologies available at that time. There were, however, several annoying attributes to the structure that bothered analysts for the ensuing 22 years. During the two decades that followed the initial work there have been enormous developments in NMR technology. Using new experimental approaches, specifically homodecoupled 1,1- and 1,n-HD-ADEQUATE NMR experiments developed in 2014, the structure of only a 700 µg sample of cryptospirolepine has been revised and is shown on the cover of this volume. The confluence of the NMR technological and methodological advances that allowed the revision of the structure of cryptospirolepine using a submilligram sample seems a fitting example for this book, which is dedicated to the NMR characterization of various classes of natural products. Volume 2 considers data processing and algorithmic based analyses tailored to natural product structure elucidation and reviews the application of NMR to the analysis of a series of different natural product families including marine natural products, terpenes, steroids, alkaloids and carbohydrates. Volume 1 discusses contemporary NMR approaches including optimized and future hardware and experimental approaches to obtain both the highest quality and most appropriate spectral data for analysis. These books, bringing together acknowledged experts, uniquely focus on the combination of experimental approaches and modern hardware and software applied to the structure elucidation of natural products. The volumes will be an essential resource for NMR spectroscopists, natural product chemists and industrial researchers working on natural product analysis or the characterization of impurities and degradation products of pharmaceuticals that can be as scarce as natural product samples.

Book excerpt: While there are many books available on methods of organic and biochemical analysis, the majority are either primarily concerned with the application of a particular technique (e.g. paper chromatography) or have been written for an audience of chemists or for biochemists work ing mainly with animaltissues. Thus, no simple guide to modern metho ds of plant analysis exists and the purpose of the present volume is to fill this gap. It is primarily intended for students in the plant sciences, who have a botanical or a general biological background. It should also be of value to students in biochemistry, pharmacognosy, food science and 'natural products' organic chemistry. Most books on chromatography, while admirably covering the needs of research workers, tend to overwhelm the student with long lists of solvent systems and spray reagents that can be applied to each class of organic constituent. The intention here is to simplify the situation by listing only a few specially recommended techniques that have wide currency in phytochemical laboratories. Sufficient details are provided to allow the student to use the techniques for themselves and most sections contain some introductory practical experiments which can be used in classwork.

Book excerpt: Volume 8 of this series presents four timely reviews on alkaloids: Chapter 1 is a magnificent and monumental review of curare, "a group of dart and/or arrow poisons varying in composition and featuring muscle relaxation as their basic pharmacological action." The fascinating history of curare is recounted, beginning with early encounters by the Spanish Conquistadores through its use as arrow poisons by the forest tribes in hunting and warfare, its chemistry, ethnography, botany and pharmacology. A terminal section of this chapter treats the development of modern muscle relaxants. This chapter thus traces how curare-initially only a crude plant extract-has given rise to the widely used and very important neuromuscular blocking agents of today. The precise role of plant secondary metabolites and their interactions with insect herbivores have been focal points for research by chemists, botanists and entomologists for many years. Alkaloids and their glycosides are frequently involved as feeding deterrents. Chapter 2 treats the relationships between the chemistry of alkaloids in host plants and the effects that these compounds may have on insect herbivores. Interestingly, an alkaloid produced by a plant may manifest different effects on different insects.

Book excerpt: While some of the most commonly investigated — and most notorious — chemicals in the world are alkaloids, many modern medicines are also based on alkaloid structures. Chemists continue to explore new synthetic routes and alkaloid derivatives in search of drug candidates for fighting disease. Drawn from the venerable Dictionary of Natural Products, the second edition of the Dictionary of Alkaloids categorizes all known alkaloids, presenting concise chemical, structural, and physical data. The addition of an authoritative foreword, written by Geoffrey Cordell, eminent alkaloid chemist and Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious series The Alkaloids, Chemistry and Biology, sets the scene for this fascinating subject. Now More than Double the Size of the Previous Edition The dictionary embraces a wide definition of alkaloid so that non-basic alkaloidal amides are also comprehensively covered. Grown in number from the prior edition, the number of alkaloids documented is now more than doubled to over 20,000. For this new edition, every existing entry has been inspected for accuracy and the great majority are updated. The extensive introduction has been completely rewritten and expanded to give a concise, authoritative, and fully referenced account of the different types of alkaloids. The editorial team has been enhanced by the addition of Professor László Szabó, a renowned expert on the indole alkaloids. The presentation and classification of this large and complex class of alkaloids has been completely revamped. Reflects Groundbreaking New Developments in the Field Some notable shifts in emphasis reflect the changes in the field since the first edition was published in 1989. The main areas of new information concern novel and improved synthetic methods, and the isolation of new alkaloids of unprecedented structure from a variety of organisms, some of them resulting from the participation of newly recognized enzyme types, such as the Diels-Adler enzymes. The text also reflects new understanding of the interrelatedness of ecosystems and the way in which alkaloids and other metabolites may be passed to and metabolized by predators. An important feature of the dictionary is its classification scheme for Type of Compound. These codes are designed to complement substructure searching. Each heading merges all of the alkaloids thought by specialists to be bio-genetically related, even those that don’t share the same carbon skeleton. Includes a Fully Searchable CD-ROM Accompanying this dictionary is a fully searchable CD-ROM. The two media offer the luxury of choice between the sophisticated and user-friendly search possibilities presented in the electronic version or the ability to thumb through the highly browsable print version. Either way, readers will find access to data unparalleled both in scope and depth.
