Download or read book Urban Informatics written by Wenzhong Shi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 941 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is the first to systematically introduce the principles of urban informatics and its application to every aspect of the city that involves its functioning, control, management, and future planning. It introduces new models and tools being developed to understand and implement these technologies that enable cities to function more efficiently – to become ‘smart’ and ‘sustainable’. The smart city has quickly emerged as computers have become ever smaller to the point where they can be embedded into the very fabric of the city, as well as being central to new ways in which the population can communicate and act. When cities are wired in this way, they have the potential to become sentient and responsive, generating massive streams of ‘big’ data in real time as well as providing immense opportunities for extracting new forms of urban data through crowdsourcing. This book offers a comprehensive review of the methods that form the core of urban informatics from various kinds of urban remote sensing to new approaches to machine learning and statistical modelling. It provides a detailed technical introduction to the wide array of tools information scientists need to develop the key urban analytics that are fundamental to learning about the smart city, and it outlines ways in which these tools can be used to inform design and policy so that cities can become more efficient with a greater concern for environment and equity.
Book Synopsis Vehicle Speeds and Operating Costs by : Thawat Watanatada
Download or read book Vehicle Speeds and Operating Costs written by Thawat Watanatada and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road-user costs are the largest cost elements in road transport. Improvements in road conditions can yet pay substantial dividends by reducing vehicle operating costs. Expressing vehicle operating costs in relation to road characteristics--geometry and pavement condition--is the logical approach. For certain cost components, especially fuel consumption, the required data can be obtained by controlled experiments. Vehicle maintenance costs utilizing extensive road-user surveys are needed. This volume takes an aggregate-mechanistic view of vehicle speed and operating costs under free flow conditions. Basing their analysis on the mechanistic principles of propulsion and motion as well as on postulated assumptions of driver behavior, the authors arrive at predictions at three levels of detail, ranging from a simulation method for use in detailed geometric design at the link level to an aggregate method for use in investment planning at the sectoral level. The models were estimated using the comprehensive database collected in the Brazil-UNDP-World Bank highway research project and were validated along with data sets from India. One of the significant contributions to highway economics research made in this study is the probabilistic limiting velocity approach to steady-state speed prediction, which, combined with the aggregate-mechanistic methodology, will provide a possible basis for future research on the far more complex problem of operating costs under congested conditions.

This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook provides comprehensive coverage of all of the major factors that underpin our understanding of urban and transport planning in the developed world. Combining urban and transport planning in one volume, the chapters present the state of the art as well as new research and directions for the future. The contributions from leading international academics at the forefront of their fields consider transport and urban planning from a number of different perspectives including historical, policy and strategy dimensions, appraisal and financing of options, planning and design of urban areas and the management of transport and urban systems. Examples and practical guides from the developed world are included along with a detailed discussion of the emerging issues. The Handbook provides an essential reference to all of the key points on the topic as well as signalling areas of concern and future research paths. Academics, researchers, students, policymakers and practitioners will find it a constant source of information and guidance.
Download or read book Urban Logistics written by Michael Browne and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 80 per cent of European and American citizens live in an urban environment. Due to their large populations and extensive commercial establishments, urban areas require large quantities of goods and services for commercial and domestic use. This results in increasing levels of demand for freight transport services. Freight transport in towns and cities is a major contributor to environmental impacts, particularly to local air pollution and noise. Urban Logistics addresses public policy makers, freight transport companies and receivers of supplies, providing them with the information and guidance to affect change in the logistics of the city. Urban Logistics is written by an outstanding team of international editors combining their expertise and using their research from leading business schools in Sweden and the US. There are also valuable contributions from academics and industry experts from companies and universities from all over the world. The book includes clear examples of initiatives that work and business case developments, as well as toolkits for policymakers and managers who are devising new initiatives. There is an in-depth examination of different aspects of urban logistics, such as retail logistics for cities, urban food supply chains, services and the special logistics requirements involved, construction, waste management and e-commerce and home delivery. There is also a focus on networks and partnerships and an analysis of innovation as a new constant.
