Book excerpt: The Standard Model of Particle Physics has been verified to unprecedented precision in the last few decades. However there are still phenomena in nature which cannot be explained, and as such new theories will be required. Since terrestrial experiments are limited in both the energy and precision that can be probed, new methods are required to search for signs of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this dissertation, I demonstrate how these theories can be probed by searching for remnants of their effects in the early Universe. In particular I focus on three possible extensions of the Standard Model: the addition of massive neutral particles as dark matter, the addition of charged massive particles, and the existence of higher dimensions. For each new model, I review the existing experimental bounds and the potential for discovering new physics in the next generation of experiments. For dark matter, I introduce six simple models which I have developed, and which involve a minimum amount of new physics, as well as reviewing one existing model of dark matter. For each model I calculate the latest constraints from astrophysics experiments, nuclear recoil experiments, and collider experiments. I also provide motivations for studying sub-GeV mass dark matter, and propose the possibility of searching for light WIMPs in the decay of B-mesons and other heavy particles. For charged massive relics, I introduce and review the recently proposed model of catalyzed Big Bang nucleosynthesis. In particular I review the production of Li6 by this mechanism, and calculate the abundance of Li7 after destruction of Be7 by charged relics. The result is that for certain natural relics CBBN is capable of removing tensions between the predicted and observed Li6 and Li7 abundances which are present in the standard model of BBN. For extra dimensions, I review the constraints on the ADD model from both astrophysics and collider experiments. I then calculate the constraints on this model from.

Book excerpt: Advances made by physicists in understanding matter, space, and time and by astronomers in understanding the universe as a whole have closely intertwined the question being asked about the universe at its two extremesâ€"the very large and the very small. This report identifies 11 key questions that have a good chance to be answered in the next decade. It urges that a new research strategy be created that brings to bear the techniques of both astronomy and sub-atomic physics in a cross-disciplinary way to address these questions. The report presents seven recommendations to facilitate the necessary research and development coordination. These recommendations identify key priorities for future scientific projects critical for realizing these scientific opportunities.

Book excerpt: This book is written from the viewpoint that a deep connection exists between cosmology and particle physics. It presents the results and ideas on both the homogeneous and isotropic Universe at the hot stage of its evolution and in later stages. The main chapters describe in a systematic and pedagogical way established facts and concepts on the early and the present Universe. The comprehensive treatment, hence, serves as a modern introduction to this rapidly developing field of science. To help in reading the chapters without having to constantly consult other texts, essential materials from General Relativity and the theory of elementary particles are collected in the appendices. Various hypotheses dealing with unsolved problems of cosmology, and often alternative to each other, are discussed at a more advanced level. These concern dark matter, dark energy, matter-antimatter asymmetry, etc.Particle physics and cosmology underwent rapid development between the first and the second editions of this book. In the second edition, many chapters and sections have been revised, and numerical values of particle physics and cosmological parameters have been updated.

Book excerpt: There are compelling evidences of gravitational effects from dark matter in cosmology and astronomy. By studying other imprints besides gravity, we might be able to infer its properties and interactions with Standard Model particles. This thesis explores how different dark matter models generate interesting observables and what can be learned by looking into various datasets. I demonstrate that novel techniques and datasets from indirect searches can be combined to set stringent constraints on the model parameters. In particular, this thesis details the calculations of constraints from two directions: on the one hand I will show how to constrain the rate of scattering, decay, and annihilation by taking advantage of cosmological observables including the Cosmic Microwave Background and the 21-cm neutral hydrogen line; on the other hand I will exploit astronomical datasets to infer properties of dark matter substructures and halo structures. The sources of the observables span a wide of range of cosmological time from cosmological recombination to the late-time universe, and they can be applied to probe complementary parameter space. With the upcoming precision measurements of astronomy, these novel ideas and calculations of indirect detections will lead insight into the nature of dark matter.

Book excerpt: The most successful scientific theory today about the origin and evolution of the universe is known as the standard Big Bang model, which is one of the most ambitious intellectual constructions of the humanity. It is based on two consolidated branches of theoretical physics, namely, the theory of General Relativity and the Standard Model of particle physics, and is able to make robust predictions, some of them being already confirmed by very precise observations. However, this model is not able to explain some questions raised by observational evidence, such as early inflation of the universe, dark matter and dark energy. This book makes an overview of some of the features of the standard cosmology, and also includes a few original models proposed to solve some of the shortcomings of the standard cosmology, as possible extensions of the Big Bang model. The models, published as articles in scientific journals, introduce new symmetries, fields and particles in order to explain inflation, dark energy and dark matter, separately or in a unified description. The book is addressed especially to PhD students, but also to anyone who is interested in cosmology and astroparticle theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dark universe contains matter and energy unidentifiable with current physical models, accounting for 95% of all the matter and energetic equivalent in the universe. The enormous surplus brings up daunting enigmas, such as the cosmological constant problem and the apparent distortions in the dynamics of deep space, and so coming to grips with the invisible universe has become a scientific imperative. This book addresses this need, reckoning that no cogent physical model of the dark universe can be implemented without first addressing the metaphysical hurdles along the way. The foremost problem is identifying the topology of the universe which, as argued in the book, is highly relevant to unveil the secrets of the dark universe. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a valuable tool in this effort since it can reconcile conflicting data from deep space with the extant laws of physics by building models to decipher the dark universe. This book explores the applications of AI and how it can be used to embark on a metaphysical quest to identify the topology of the universe as a prerequisite to implement a physical model of the dark sector that enables a meaningful extrapolation into the visibile sector. The book is intended for a broad readership, but a background in college-level physics and computer science is essential. The book will be a valuable guide for graduate students as well as researchers in physics, astrophysics, and computer science focusing on AI applications to elucidate the nature of the dark universe. Key Features: · Provides readers with an intellectual toolbox to understand physical arguments on dark matter and energy. · Up to date with the latest cutting-edge research. · Authored by an expert on artificial intelligence and mathematical physics.

Starting with the description of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, this cogently written textbook introduces the reader to the astronomy of galaxies, their structure, active galactic nuclei, evolution and large scale distribution in the Universe. After an extensive and thorough introduction to modern observational and theoretical cosmology, the focus turns to the formation of structures and astronomical objects in the early Universe. The basics of classical astronomy and stellar astrophysics needed for extragalactic astronomy are provided in the appendix. While this book has grown out of introductory university courses on astronomy and astrophysics and includes a set of problems and solutions, it will not only benefit undergraduate students and lecturers; thanks to the comprehensive coverage of the field, even graduate students and researchers specializing in related fields will appreciate it as a valuable reference work.
