Book excerpt: La falta de agua que actualmente se experimenta en diversas regiones del planeta es una de las mayores problemáticas que enfrenta la humanidad hoy en día. Este es un problema global, por lo que afecta directamente a México. En el mundo se han utilizado diversas herramientas y métodos para solucionar el problema. Una de las herramientas más útiles es la modelación del sistema hídrico y la posterior simulación de modificaciones en la gestión del recurso. El software Water Evaluation and Planning System (WEAP) permite la modelación y simulación mencionada, y por sus características es uno de los programas más utilizados a nivel mundial. Este escrito muestra la metodología, resultados y conclusiones del proyecto de modelación del sistema hídrico del estado de Colima y simulación de políticas de gestión del agua mediante el uso del software WEAP. Como año base de modelación se definió el año 2000, mientras que el periodo de simulación de las políticas de gestión comprendió del año 2001 al 2025. Los escenarios simulados en este proyecto fueron: a) reforestación en el estado, b) ahorros en las demandas urbanas, c) instalación de plantas de tratamiento, y d) reconversión de los cultivos en el sector agrícola. Los resultados obtenidos muestran el impacto en la disponibilidad del agua al aplicar las políticas de gestión planteadas en las simulaciones. Las conclusiones mostradas en este proyecto no pretenden crear una totalmente nueva forma de administrar el recurso sino que se proponen áreas de mejora en la gestión del líquido.

[...] We have failed to meet the 2010 target, and the latest MDG report notes the grave consequences of this for poor people: "The irreparable loss of biodiversity will also hamper efforts to meet other MDGs, especially those related to poverty, hunger and health, by increasing the vulnerability of the poor and reducing their options for development." The CBD has long emphasised the need for integrating [...] DEPENDENCE OF THE POOR ON BIODIVERSITY This review focuses on the question: which groups of the (differentiated) poor depend, in which types of ways, on different elements of biological diversity? [...] The methodology for the review included an examination of the peer-reviewed literature, as published in journals and books, and an examination of websites and portals of major organisations/forums work- ing on biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation.
