Book excerpt: Capacity management is a core activity when designing and operating distributed software systems. Particularly, enterprise application systems are exposed to highly varying workloads. Employing static capacity management, this leads to unnecessarily high total cost of ownership due to poor resource usage efficiency. This thesis introduces a model-driven online capacity management approach for distributed component-based software systems, called SLAstic. The core contributions of this approach are a) modeling languages to capture relevant architectural information about a controlled software system, b) an architecture-based online capacity management framework based on the common MAPE-K control loop architecture, c) model-driven techniques supporting the automation of the approach, d) architectural runtime reconfiguration operations for controlling a system’s capacity, as well as e) an integration of the Palladio Component Model. A qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the approach is performed by case studies, lab experiments, and simulation.

Book excerpt: A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities offers the most advanced approach to date, empirically validated at software development organizations. This handbook adds a valuable contribution to the much-needed literature on people-related aspects in software engineering. The primary focus is on the particular challenge of extending software process definitions to more explicitly address people-related considerations. The capability concept is not present nor has it been considered in most software process models. The authors have developed a capabilities-oriented software process model, which has been formalized in UML and implemented as a tool. A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities guides readers through the incorporation of the individual’s capabilities into the software process. Structured to meet the needs of research scientists and graduate-level students in computer science and engineering, this book is also suitable for practitioners in industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large-scale changes are taking place in the way modelling is performed within the US EPA, and a new generation of environmental models is currently under construction. The US EPA is engaging in several modelling efforts in response to Congressional mandates such as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. These mandates require the scientific modelling of the impact of pollutants on human health and the environment. The complexity of scale in environmental models has increased by several orders of magnitude, with a simultaneous demand for increased stability, accuracy and efficiency in the computed model solution. This book showcases numerical algorithms appropriate to the subject areas listed below and explores how new algorithmic methods would benefit the US EPA's environmental models and other environmental studies.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of self-adaptive software requires the engineering of an adaptation engine that controls and adapts the underlying adaptable software by means of feedback loops. The adaptation engine often describes the adaptation by using runtime models representing relevant aspects of the adaptable software and particular activities such as analysis and planning that operate on these runtime models. To systematically address the interplay between runtime models and adaptation activities in adaptation engines, runtime megamodels have been proposed for self-adaptive software. A runtime megamodel is a specific runtime model whose elements are runtime models and adaptation activities. Thus, a megamodel captures the interplay between multiple models and between models and activities as well as the activation of the activities. In this article, we go one step further and present a modeling language for ExecUtable RuntimE MegAmodels (EUREMA) that considerably eases the development of adaptation engines by following a model-driven engineering approach. We provide a domain-specific modeling language and a runtime interpreter for adaptation engines, in particular for feedback loops. Megamodels are kept explicit and alive at runtime and by interpreting them, they are directly executed to run feedback loops. Additionally, they can be dynamically adjusted to adapt feedback loops. Thus, EUREMA supports development by making feedback loops, their runtime models, and adaptation activities explicit at a higher level of abstraction. Moreover, it enables complex solutions where multiple feedback loops interact or even operate on top of each other. Finally, it leverages the co-existence of self-adaptation and off-line adaptation for evolution.

Book excerpt: Langdon is a systems kind of guy who hates meetings, isn't fond of working, and can't stand work stupidity. Sitting through tons of meetings and experiencing numerous management approaches that essentially did little to improve work effectiveness, he could have dropped out to become a guitar-playing hippie. Not his style though...instead he invented a work system-a Language of WorkTM-that would allow everyone to see work quickly in the same way, and create good solutions together. Using the Language of Work Formula allowed emotional displays, political posturing, and irrelevant thoughts to disappear from the discussions. Instead, everyone's point of view was visible. He and his business partner taught the Work Formula in 10 short minutes, then engaged clients to create clear job and work group models that managers could facilitate. In response to this acceptance and on the verge of actual retirement, the Langdons have produced The Work Trilogy-a legacy of practical knowledge and practice for executives, managers, and workers. The Managing Model helps managers enhance their facilitation of teams, big and small. A series of Work Analytic Tools applies the Work Formula to various management functions with greater ease, collaboration, and commitment from your team. Managers are encouraged to read The Working Model as well to facilitate work hand-in-hand with workers through a shared Language of Work. This is a management book unlike any you have read before. Its approach is systematic and systemic. Its focus is on operational soundness. It is practical and concrete, based on cause and effect of work as you manage others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the Smart Grid, the combination of automation equipment, communication technology and IT is crucial. Interoperability of devices and systems can be seen as the key enabler of smart grids. Therefore, international initiatives have been started in order to identify interoperability core standards for Smart Grids. IEC 62357, the so called Seamless Integration Architecture, is one of these very core standards, which has been identified by recent Smart Grid initiatives and roadmaps to be essential for building and managing intelligent power systems. The Seamless Integration Architecture provides an overview of the interoperability and relations between further standards from IEC TC 57 like the IEC 61970/61968: Common Information Model - CIM. CIM has proven to be a mature standard for interoperability and engineering; consequently, it is a cornerstone of the IEC Smart Grid Standardization Roadmap. This book provides an overview on how the CIM developed, in which international projects and roadmaps is has already been covered and describes the basic use cases for CIM. This book has been written for both Power Engineers trying to get to know the EMS and business IT part of Smart Grid and for Computer Scientist finding out where ICT technology is applied in EMS and DMS Systems. The book is divided into two parts dealing with the theoretical foundations and a practical part describing tools and use cases for CIM.
