Book excerpt: The general aim of this book is to explain the development of several types of models using an extremely small number of parameters in an attempt to find consistent properties of integral living matter within aquatic ecosystems. Starting from a minimal model of the whole study [i.e. the ideal minimal ecosystem (IMES)], the authors developed a series of statistical models (size spectra, rank distribution, and regression models, including allometries). They then proceeded from ataxonomic to taxonomic size spectra to demonstrate and explain the high consistency of natural communities. Several types of species size-frequency distributions or taxonomic size spectra were applied, diminishing the importance of rare species and the assemblage time-space heterogeneity. A series of original studies written during the last thirty years to develop condensed, formalized models and empirical comparisons has demonstrated general patterns and the models drawbacks; hence, several cycles of modernization were fulfilled, revealing both the stability of natural aquatic communities and small-scale variability of the general pattern. Comparisons of several taxonomic hierarchy levels speak in favor of the whole-assemblage origin of the statistical mechanisms, supporting the long-term consistency of phytoplankton taxonomic size structure. Specific changes in the taxonomic size spectrum fine structure were evident and may be helpful for diagnostics, while the spectrum general pattern consistency can be helpful for monitoring and modeling the aim of this study. The consistency difference between several levels of the phytoplankton taxonomic hierarchy was demonstrated as a new phenomenon important for modeling, monitoring, and ecological forecast. The third symposium was held at the University of Geneva, in 1984, and also included a num ber of contributions dealing with sediment/saltwater interactions. It is expected that future symposia of this series will retain this approach, and that the revised sympo sium title will remain the same for later proceedings of these meetings. Because of the large number of submissions in 1984, many were given as poster presentations. Extended abstracts of all contributions to the Geneva symposium appear in Interactions Between Sediments and Ubter (C. E. P. Consultants Ltd. , 26 Albany St. , Edinburgh, EHI 3QH, U. K. , 1984). Full-length papers appear only in the proceedings. The format of the third symposium was similar to its predecessors. The location provided a particularly good opportunity for attendance by European scientists, who represented about 81% of the participants. About 16% came from North America and 3% were from Southeast Asia and Australia. It is unfortunate that there were no contributors from either Africa or South America, or other parts of Asia. In all, 16 countries were represented at this symposium. In a continuing attempt to provide equal opportunities for attendance by scientists from other parts of the world, it is planned to hold the next symposium in Australia in 1987. In its Ecology Program, one mode of initiating research is to en courage the development of new ideas through advisory workshops. The NSF is specifically directed to strengthen our nation's research potential. In addition, stimulating new approaches to research will continue to be prominent in the coming years as federal attention is given to increasing the innovativeness and competitiveness of the U. S. in science and engineering. A decision to initiate a workshop does not arise de novo in the Ecology Program. Rather, it emerges from panel discussions, conversations with in vestigators at meetings or on the phone, and from discussions between pro gram officers in the Division of Biotic Systems and Resources. This workshop was developed to provide advice to the NSF and the lim nological community. Some NSF perceptions on future funding for ecolog ical research on lake communities are presented here. Researchers often mentioned a paucity of innovative lake ecology at the community level. This perception was accompanied by a certain frustration since lakes probably have the best empirical data base of any natural environment and should continue to lead in the development of ecological concepts. Members of NSF advisory panels sometimes expressed similar concerns during consid eration of proposals for lake research.
