Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive in its coverage, Modelling the Southern Region - 1948 to the Present presents an historical overview of the post-war Southern Region of British Railways before guiding the reader through a series of detailed modelling projects, illustrating all of the techniques and equipment required, from building freight, locomotives and architecture, to modernization, electrification and the third rail. These projects make use of the best available commercial model-making products and provide an introduction to scratch-building your own lineside items. Each project is supported by a short historical background section and suggestions as to how each project could be further developed. The result will be a set of models that sets the modeller on track for a first-class model of the Southern Region. Contents include: full listings of all tools and materials; an explanation of the techniques used and possible alternative methods; step by step instructions from simple to more advanced projects; a detailed but easily digestible approach to building both ready-to-run and kit-built items; techniques and ideas on how to construct those items not yet available from the model trade. This is an essential reference for all those who wish to build a model railway based on the post-war Southern Region of British Railways and is fully illustrated with 237 colour photographs detailing modelling techniques.

Book excerpt: Abstract : In order to provide state, local, and regional policy-makers and planners as well as businessmen with an analytic tool, an input--output economic analysis was made of the South Central region of Texas for the year 1967. The results of the study are presented in this report entitled, "An input-output model of the South Central region of Texas." This report provides an overview of the study region, including the geographic setting, demographic characteristics and economic factors of income, employment and earnings. Methodology and procedures of analyses used in the study are discussed. Suggestions as to how the findings of the study may be used as they relate to the total regional economy are presented along with some of the results of this study. The input-output tables for this region are included in this report.

Book excerpt: Developing an original blend of perspectives from the fields of international and comparative political economy, this book presents an innovative and in-depth account of the contemporary political economy of the southern cone of Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. It identifies a new and distinctive model of regional capitalist development emerging in the southern cone and a complex relationship with both the global political economy and the five distinctive national political economies in the region. Ranging across the contours of labour, business, states and regionalist processes, Phillips assesses the significance of the Southern Cone Model for the ways in which we understand contemporary capitalist development at both national and transnational levels.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian segment of the Archean Superior province is a major world source of lode gold. The gold deposits occur in or near regional transcurrent and oblique slip-shear deformation zones that comprise a conjugate set to a northwest- directed compression of the Superior province. These structures provided permeable pathways for the flow of large volumes of auriferous fluid derived from an external source. Historic gold production from the United States segment of the Superior province is modest, but the close similarity in the geologic environment of the United States and Canadian segments suggests that large gold deposits should be present in the U.S.A. An occurrence model largely based on known parameters of gold mineralization in Canada suggests that the greenstone-granite terranes of the Wawa and Wabigoon sub-provinces in the United States are favorable for important gold deposits. The model suggests that gold mineralization took place during or later than the transcurrent faulting and that it took place contemporaneously with emplacement of silica-undersaturated intrusions. The faulting occurred late in the igneous-tectonic history of the Superior province, about 2,690 Ma. Extensive, intense alteration comprising carbonitization, silicification, and sulfidization accompanied the gold mineralization. The relationships between alteration minerals and mineralized veins suggest a close temporal relationship between the alteration and gold mineralization processes. The proposed occurrence model for gold mineralization and the available data suggest that two broad regions of greenstone in the Archean Superior province in north-central United States are particularly favorable for gold deposits: (1) the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and (2) northeastern Minnesota. The Ishpeming greenstone belt of the Wawa subprovince in Michigan contains the important Ropes deposit and several other known gold occurrences, and the Vermilion district (Wawa subprovince) in northeastern Minnesota contains highly anomalous gold in soils and minor known bedrock occurrences. Transcurrent faults in both areas should be favorable sites for gold mineralization

Book excerpt: A fascinating story of the collaborative efforts of an Englishman and a Connecticut Yankee to develop the iron resources of northeast Alabama Anniston"s early years constitute a fascinating story of the collaborative efforts of an Englishman and a Connecticut Yankee to develop the iron resources of northeast Alabama at a time when the area was struggling to recover from the devastating effects of the Civil War. The result was a robust, successful new town that benefited from their profit-minded business acumen and from their paternalistic but utopian mind-set. With town-building and boosting efforts, Anniston soon became known to contemporaries as "the model city of the New South." The town's economic survival through booms and busts is a study in marketing and diversification, of reliance on old liaisons in hard times. Originally published in 1978 and now reprinted in a paperbound edition with a new preface, the book explores Anniston's first quarter century and yields rich material because it cuts across several historical fields, including urban, economic, quantitative, social, and political history, as well as labor and race relations

Increasing demands, greater awareness of environmental pressures and more exacting legislation has heightened the need for quantitative models to predict the impacts of groundwater use. In the UK this has culminated in a unique national, regulator-led programme for England and Wales to develop conceptual and numerical models of the principal bedrock aquifers. The outcomes of this programme will be of interest to the international hydrogeological community, particularly as international legislation such as the European Water Framework Directive requires management of water issues across administrative boundaries with a varied cast of stakeholders. The collection of papers provides a contrast between practitioner- and research-based approaches to assess and predict the anthropogenic impacts and environmental pressures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though Asian Indians are typically thought of as a "model minority", not much is known about the school experiences of their children. Positive stereotyping of these immigrants and their children often masks educational needs and issues, creates class divides within the Indian-American community, and triggers stress for many Asian Indian students. This volume examines second generation (America-born) and 1.5 generation (foreign-born) Asian Indians as they try to balance peer culture, home life and academics. It explores how, through the acculturation process, these children either take advantage of this positive stereotype or refute their stereotyped ethnic image and move to downward mobility. Focusing on migrant experiences of the Indian diasporas in the United States, this volume brings attention to highly motivated Asian Indian students who are overlooked because of their cultural dispositions and outlooks on schooling, and those students who are more likely to underachieve. It highlights the assimilation of Asian Indian students in mainstream society and their understandings of Americanization, social inequality, diversity and multiculturalism.

He is the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, the automobile designer of the famous Volkswagen Beetle. Since his childhood, Hans-Peter Porsche collected tin toys from Marklin. A few years ago, he decided to present his collection of toys to the public in a special museum. This museum is called “Traumwerk Porsche” in the German language, meaning “Dreamworks Porsche” in the English language. In addition to the toy collection area, there is a large event hall for Porsche cars and a very large model railroad display with HO scale model trains in action. Tracks and trains are made by Marklin. Outside, there is also a railroad and a playground for children. Porsche’s “Dreamworks Model Railway Museum” is located in the South of Germany in the town, called Anger-Aufham. The large model railway layout has got an exhibition area of more than 400 square meters and represents the three countries Austria, Switzerland and Germany. When it gets night on Mr. Porsche’s model railway layout a special laser light show will begin: Every 17 minutes the day changes into the night. At this moment, a beautiful light show is presented, which the world has not yet seen. It is a unique and amazing mixture of classic railroad model building and modern computer animation through a 360 degree video beamer panorama. There are more than 20 laser video beamers spotting buildings and bridges on the layout.
