Book Synopsis Cosmic Rays in the Heliosphere by : Bernd Heber
Download or read book Cosmic Rays in the Heliosphere written by Bernd Heber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a comprehensive synopsis of the current state of cosmic rays, their modulation and their effects in the Earth’s atmosphere. Leading scientists in the field assess the current state of our understanding of the spatial and temporal variations of galactic and anomalous cosmic rays in the Heliosphere, and their relation to effects of the Sun. The main objective is to understand the spatial and temporal variation of galactic and anomalous cosmic rays in the light of recent observations, theory and modeling by identifying the key mechanism(s) of cosmic ray modulation and how changes on the Sun relate to changes in the observed characteristics of cosmic rays in the Heliosphere; examining the current long-lasting solar minimum and understand its implications for solar-cycle variations and long-term variations; and interpreting the long-term variations of cosmogenic radionuclides in terms of solar variability and climate change on Earth. This volume is aimed at graduate students active in the fields of solar physics, space science, and cosmic ray physics. Originally published in Space Science Reviews journal, Vol. 176/1-4, 2013.
Book Synopsis Modeling of Cosmic-Ray Transport Processes by :
Download or read book Modeling of Cosmic-Ray Transport Processes written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main task has been the development, testing, and data comparison of a global time dependent and three dimensional heliospheric transport code of galactic cosmic rays. While the code is based on current standard and established theory of solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays, it is far more computationally demanding than what a typical application oriented study may require. The purpose for developing such a code was to afford the group a fully three dimensional solar modulation model by which a computationally efficient parametric set of simulated data can reliably and efficiently be developed. This development should afford the group both qualitative and quantitative advantage in this regard and relative to modulation codes currently available to the group which tend to be rudimentary one dimensional codes. The report is in 4 sections: (1) description of the basic physical model the new three dimensional transport code is based upon, (2) numerical implementation and various algorithms of the code, (3) sample calculations and comparison to available data, and (4) direction and recommendations for future work.

Book excerpt: In every scientific discipline there are milestones - periods of significant accom plishment when it is appropriate to pause and summarize the state of the field. Such is the case for the study of the behavior of cosmic rays in the heliosphere. We are just passing through solar minimum conditions, when the heliosphere has a well-ordered and relatively simple configuration. We have been fortunate to have an array of spacecraft - unprecedented in the history of space exploration and unlikely to be repeated for generations - to provide comprehensive measurements of cosmic rays throughout the heliosphere. Ulysses has completed its historic first exploration of the heliosphere at high heliographic latitudes. Pioneer and Voyager have been exploring the outer heliosphere. The durable IMP-8 and now the WIND spacecraft have provided detailed baseline measurements at Earth. Concurrently, there has been a steady improvement in theoretical understanding of cosmic ray behavior through the use of ever more sophisticated numerical models. This milestone in cosmic ray studies was celebrated with a Workshop on Cos mic Rays in the Heliosphere which was convened by L. A. Fisk, J. R. Jokipii.

Book Synopsis Studies Using Imp, Voyager and Pioneer Cosmic Ray Data to Determine the Size of the Heliosphere by : National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa

This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to use the cosmic ray data from the IMP, Voyager and Pioneer spacecraft in the heliosphere out to approximately 65 AU to estimate the size of the heliosphere. We used several techniques to develop a consistent picture of the size of the heliosphere. The first method used a response function approach which determined the intensity as a function of time by scaling the modulation effect as they move outward and eventually reach the boundary of the heliosphere. In this model the effects of transient cosmic ray disturbances is included. A second approach using the perturbation method in which drifts are considered as a perturbation to the standard diffusion-convection modulation models was not fully developed. In a third approach the location of the modulation boundary beyond the termination shock was estimated using observations of the intensity and radial gradients between Voyager 2 and Pioneer 10 along with new estimates of the interstellar intensity of more than 70 MeV galactic cosmic rays. Using this method we found that for 7 years, from 1983 to 1990, the modulation boundary remained constant at 83 +/- 5 AU. We infer from these studies that a modulation boundary can be estimated only by extrapolating the observed radial gradients when the solar magnetic field polarity is such that cosmic-ray particles are drifting in the heliosphere inward toward the Earth along the neutral sheet. The boundary distance is larger than the estimates of the location of the termination shock at 67 +/- 5 AU using the same method. Two other studies partially supported by this grant are attached. The first deals with the recovery period of the greater than 70 MeV cosmic rays in the outer heliosphere from 1992-1995. In the second paper we compare the rigidity dependence of the 11-year cosmic ray variation at the Earth in two cycles of opposite solar magnetic field polarity. Lockwood, John A.
