Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Severe accidents (SA) in LWR occur when reactor vessel water decreases and there is no available water for core cooling. During SA the reactor core could, after partial/total melt down, pour into the lower plenum. The study of the interaction of melt fuel with water is the objective of MFCI (Melt Fuel Coolant Interaction). MFCI is an important issue in reactor safety . A SA can lead to energetic (steam explosion) or non-energetic (melt quenching) interactions in-vessel or ex-vessel. FARO facility at JRC-Ispra simulated MFCI experiments under real conditions. Pre-test/post-test analytical activities using COMETA code were carried out. The code was assessed based on FARO tests. Limitations and uncertainties in the application to a full plant needed to be identified and quantified. The PhD research objective was achieved expanding the knowledge in MFCI. It was complemented with application of COMETA to conditions not experimented before, developing and improving COMETA sources and verifying code consistency, analysing and unifying the COMETA simulations. An analytical study was carried out to illustrate the MFCI inside a NPP SA sequence.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT Severe accidents in light water nuclear reactors occur when reactor vessel water inventory decreases and there is no available additional water coolant to be delivered into the core. In general, during an extended severe accident sequence a period exists in which the reactor core, after a partial or total melt down, is poured into the lower plenum that can have some water present. The study of the interaction of the melt fuel with the water is the objective of MFCI (Melt Fuel Coolant Interaction) activities. MFCI is one of the most important issues awaiting resolution in water cooled reactor safety analysis. The progression of a severe accident in a water cooled reactor can lead to energetic (steam explosion) or non-energetic (melt quenching) interactions as the molten fuel relocates and eventually interacts with the coolant either in the vessel lower head (in vessel) or in the cavity (ex-vessel). The MFCI experiments at JRC Ispra site were conducted in the FARO (Furnace And Release Oven) test facility under realistic melt composition and prototypical accident conditions to provide basic information on underlying phenomena. The experimental programme was complemented by comprehensive pre-test and post-test analytical activities based on the development and application of the thermalhydraulic COMETA (COre MElt Thermalhydraulic Analysis) code. The code is developed and assessed on the basis of experimental information acquired in the FARO facility tests, and there are some limitations and uncertainties in their application to the full plant, which need to be identified and possibly quantified. In general the main objective of the PhD research was achieved expanding the general knowledge in Melt Fuel Coolant Interaction. The knowledge was complemented collaborating and complementing the application of COMETA code under conditions not experimented before, developing and improving COMETA code sources and verifying the code consistency, analysing and unifying the.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes a simple fuel melt slumping model to replace the current parametric model in SCDAP/RELAP5. Specifically, a fuel-coolant interaction (FCI) model is developed to analyze the slumping molten fuel, molten fuel breakup, heat transfer to coolant, relocation of the molten droplets, size of a partially solidified particles that settle to the bottom of the lower plenum, and melt-plenum interaction, if any. Considering our objectives, the molten fuel jet breakup model, and fuel droplets Lagrangian model as included in a code TEXAS-V with Eulerian thermal hydraulics for water and steam from SCDAP/RELAP5 were used. The model was assessed with experimental data from MAGICO-2000 tests performed at University of California at Santa Barbara, and FARO Test L-08 performed at Joint Research Center, Ispra, Italy. The comparison was found satisfactory.

This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multidimensional computational-fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis has been performed of thermal-hydraulic phenomena in SRS-type reactors during hypothetical accidents caused by a partial channel blockage in the reactor core. Two specific issues have been investigated: (a) the simulation of combined flow and heat transfer in partially blocked narrow channels, and (b) parametric studies of dispersed fuel transport in high-velocity coolant flows. In the first part of the report, the issue of averaging multi-dimensional flow equations from three-dimensional (3-D) to two-dimensional (2-D) has been investigated. It has been shown that whereas good agreement can be obtained by using appropriate averaging concepts, the effect of turbulence needs special attention when simplified models are used. In the second part of this work, transport has been investigated of dispersed fuel droplets/particles carried by a high-velocity coolant from the core to the lower plenum below the core and to other components of the reactor coolant system. Parametric studies have been performed to simulate the distribution of fuel particles. It has been observed that a substantial reduction in the particle concentration occurs very close to the walls, caused only by generic hydrodynamic phenomena typical to dispersed particle flows. Such a distribution may have a significant effect on reducing particle deposition at the walls, and result in a larger amount of fuel particles flowing to other sections of the reactor system.

Book excerpt: The Integrated Fuel-Coolant Interaction Code (IFCI) is a best-estimate computer program for analysis of phenomena related to mixing of molten nuclear reactor core material with reactor coolant (water). The stand-alone version of the code, IFCI 7.0, has been designed for analysis of small- and intermediate-scale experiments in order to gain insight into the physics (including scaling effects) of molten fuel-coolant interactions. The code's methods, models, and correlations are being assessed. This report describes the flow regime, friction factor, and heat-transfer models used in the current version of IFCI (IFCI 7.0).

Book excerpt: In order to predict the effect of a fuel-coolant interaction after a hypothetical core-melt-down accident, a phenomenological model has been developed to describe the thermal and hydrodynamic behavior of a high-temperature molten jet when it interacts with saturated or subcooled water in a film boiling regime. The mechanisms of jet-material erosion were analyzed by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities on the coherent column and by boundary layer stripping on the leading edge. The heat transfer coefficient, vapor-film thickness, and net steam generation, all of which strongly affect the jet-breakup behavior, were solved analytically. It was found that the jet breakup (or erosion) depends strongly on the steam generation from the jet/water interaction. The jet-breakup length (i.e., penetration distance) was found to be sensitive to the initial jet temperature, water subcooling, and the physical state of the ambient water. The jet-breakup length and leading-edge velocity of the Wood's metal/water experiments are predicted well by the current model for the cases where a continuous vapor film exists. 14 refs., 13 figs.

The technique is based on the ability to calculate separate space- and time-dependent velocities for each of the participating components. In the limiting case of a vapor explosion, this framework allows calculation of the pre-mixing phase of film boiling and interpenetration of the working fluid by hot liquid, which is required for extrapolating from experiments to a reactor hypothetical accident. Qualitative results are compared favorably to published experimental data where an iron-alumina mixture was poured into water. Differing results are predicted with LMFBR materials.
