Book excerpt: This study is conducted in Lake Tana basin located in the Upper Blue Nile Basin in Ethiopia where water resources issues are critical and availability of relevant data is poor. The study is divided into three major components that include evaluation and analysis of the existing data, evaluation of the applicability of a physically-based distributed hydrological model and water and suspended sediment balance modeling for Lake Tana. The temporal and spatial coverage of various hydro-meteorological variables was assessed in light of recommended practices in the literature. Analyses of the hydro-meteorological datasets comprised data quality control, and determination of their characteristics in space and time. The applicability of the fully distributed physically-based hydrological model was assessed on selected catchments. The modeling exercise revealed the importance of weather data disaggregation models in generating meteorological forcings at finer time scales. Considering the quality and resolution of the inputs used, the performance of the distributed model could be judged satisfactory in two of the selected mesoscale catchments. The water balance modeling of Lake Tana was done at a monthly time step and involved estimation of the major inflow and outflow components. A dynamic conceptual model was used to estimate the contribution of catchments for which data could not be obtained. The results of the water balance model at monthly and annual time scales was generally good and the observed lake levels could be reproduced satisfactorily. Estimation of the suspended sediment balance of the lake involved development and use of rating curves and a regional area-specific model. The results of the study are useful for planning and management of water resources in the study area.

It also assessed the applicability of physics-based analytical equations (Equilibrium Theory) compared to a 1D numerical model (SOBEK-RE) to determine the least-morphologically impactful dam operation scenario on the river reaches downstream of the dam. Moreover, a HEC-RAS 2D hydrodynamic model was developed to assess the effect of the dam on the flooding extent of the Fogera Plain. This was used to study the potential implications of hydrological alteration on the ecology of the floodplain wetlands, as they are the habitats of important fish and bird species. The results contribute to knowledge on the hydro-morphological and environmental impacts of dams on downstream river systems. The developed methodologies and findings may be used to study future hydro-morphological and ecological changes that may arise due to other dam operations or climate change.

Moreover, human activities also impact hydrological processes through intensive agriculture, overgrazing and deforestation, which substantially affect the basin hydrology. Thus, understanding hydrological processes and hydro-climatic variables at various spatio-temporal scales is essential for sustainable management of water resources in the region. This research investigates the hydrology of the basin in depth using a range of methods at various spatio-temporal scales. The methods include long-term trend analysis of hydroclimatic variables, hydrologic responses analysis of land cover change, stable isotope techniques and process based rainfallrunoff modelling. A combination of field investigations with new measurements of precipitation, water levels and stable isotopes as well as existing hydro-climatic data offered gaining new insights about runoff generation processes in headwater catchments. The use of rainfall-runoff modelling in two meso-scale catchments of the Abay basin depict that a single model structure in a lumped way for the entire Abay basin cannot represent all the dominant hydrological processes. The results of the different approaches demonstrated the potential of the methods to better understand the basin hydrology in a data scarce region.

It starts from the construction of the climate change scenarios based on the outcomes of several general circulation models (GCMs), uses a simple hydrological model to convert theses scenarios into runoff, and examines the impacts by means of a set of indices. The results, however uncertain with existing accuracy of climate models, suggest that the region is likely to have the future potential to produce hydropower, increase flow duration, and increase water storage capacity without affecting outflows to the riparian countries in the 2050s.

Although floods are relatively common during the June to September rainy season in Ethiopia, the magnitude of the current flooding in 2006 is unprecedented. In year 2006 the country has experienced some of the heaviest and most intense rains on record; resulting in flash floods and/or the overflow of rivers, lakes and dams, where local residents have been advised to leave. The impact of the disaster in terms of lives, infrastructure, livelihoods, and basic coping mechanisms has yet to be assessed The rainfall variability analysis of the Lake Tana (LT) basin in 2006 showed an on average 43% increase in wet season rainfall than the normal (mean). All rainfall gauging stations show an increase in rainfall in 2006. Similarly, the variability analysis of major rivers also showed that on average 35% increase in flood season streamflow of G/Abay, Gumara, Rib, Megech, and Koga. The trend of these rivers shows that maximum runoff for the year 2006 was higher than the mean of the long term maximum flood. Whereas Lake Tana maximum flood level of 2006 (1787.155masl) shows an increase of 16 cm only from the mean flood levels of previous records (1787 masl). The Pearson III method of the moment probability distribution is the best fit for Megech and Rib rivers. For Gumara river Pearson III probability weighted moment distribution better estimate flood quantiles with less standard error. It is also found that Gamma two probability weighted moment is the best fit for Lake Tana water surface level. In general, from rainfall and flood frequency analysis the 2006-year flooding may have a chance to occur once in six years in LTB. The 2006-year flood damage indicates that there is a high impact on agricultural production of Lake Tana surrounding plains. 107,647 peoples were actually affected by floods. At least 448, 910 quantal of food grain, 1230 domestic animals, 9634 chickens, and 1088 bee-hives were damaged by the 2006 flood. The impacts of flooding on socio-economic and environmental resource indicators were qualitatively assessed. Totally twenty-seven indicators were assessed.
