The main focus is on the application of IM and PMSM in electrical drive systems, where field-orientated control has been successfully established in practice. It also discusses the use of grid-voltage oriented control of DFIMs in wind power plants. This second, enlarged edition includes new insights into flatness-based nonlinear control of IM, PMSM and DFIM. The book is useful for practitioners as well as development engineers and designers in the area of electrical drives and wind-power technology. It is a valuable resource for researchers and students.

Book excerpt: Nowadays, vector control of induction motor drives are increasingly employed in industrial drive systems, motor works on best performance at certain voltage and frequency for certain loads. This project describes a generalized model of the three-phase induction motor by using vector control method and its computer simulation using MATLAB/SIMULINK, it presents the advances made in vector control as applied to high performance AC motor drives. By using this application, it can achieve speed control by controlling the reference speed value and torque value to keep the electromagnetic torque at a constant value. Machine models in d-q representation, implementation issues with AC induction motor, inverters and converters, parameter effects for induction motor vector control are dealt with and simulation results from the project are presented and discussed by computational calculation and graphs to support this theory. The large scope in this model can lead the algorithm designers to direct their efforts to the promising areas and avoid impossible tasks. From this project, the readers can approximately understand the principle of vector control in three-phase AC induction motor drive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growing interest in electrical machines in recent times, the multiphase machine field has developed into a fascinating research area. Their intrinsic features (power splitting, better fault tolerance, or lower torque ripple) make them an appealing competitor to conventional three-phase machines. Multiphase electric drives have been recently used in applications where fault tolerance and continuous operation of the drive are required. However, the difficulties in extending the three-phase conventional current regulation and control structure to multiphase systems still limit their broad applicability in industry solutions. The main objective of this book is to illustrate new advances, developments, and applications in the field of multiphase machines and drives, while exposing these advances, developments, and applications to the scientific community and industry.

Book excerpt: The Field Orientation Principle (FOP) constitutes a fundamental concept behind the modern technology of high-performance, vector-controlled drive systems with AC motors. The recent intense interest in these systems has been spawned by the widespread transition from DC to AC drives in industry. Induction motors, industry's traditional workhorses, are particularly well suited for FOP-based vector control. The Field Orientation Principle in Control of Induction Motors presents the FOP in a simple, easy-to-understand framework based on the space-vector dynamic model of the induction machine. Relationships between the classic phasor equivalent circuits of the motor and their vector counterparts are highlighted. A step-by-step derivation of dynamic equations of the motor provides a formal background for explanation of the basic approaches to vector control. In addition, the author presents scalar control methods for low-performance drives as an intermediate stage between uncontrolled and high-performance drives. The reader will also find a full chapter devoted to power inverters, which constitute an important component of adjustable speed AC drive systems, and a review of associated issues such as observers of motor variables, parameter estimation, adaptive tuning, and principles of the position and speed control of field-oriented induction motors. With a wealth of numerical examples and computer simulations illustrating the ideas and techniques discussed and an extensive bibliography, The Field Orientation Principle in Control of Induction Motors is a practical resource and valuable reference for researchers and students interested in motor control, power and industrial electronics, and control theory.

Squirrel-cage induction motors (SCIMs) are probably the most frequently used when compared to other AC motors because of their low cost, ruggedness, and low maintenance. The material presented in this book is organized into four sections, covering the applications and structural properties of induction motors (IMs), fault detection and diagnostics, control strategies, and the more recently developed topology based on the multiphase (more than three phases) induction motors. This material should be of specific interest to engineers and researchers who are engaged in the modeling, design, and implementation of control algorithms applied to induction motors and, more generally, to readers broadly interested in nonlinear control, health condition monitoring, and fault diagnosis.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-phase induction motor (IM) drive systems are the most important workhorses of many industries worldwide. This dissertation addresses improved modeling of three-phase IM drives and model-based control algorithms for the purpose of designing better IM drive systems. Enhancements of efficiency, availability, as well as performance of IMs, such as maximum torque-per-ampere capability, power density, and torque rating, are of major interest. An advanced power loss model of three-phase IM drives is proposed and comprehensively validated at different speed, load torque, flux and input voltage conditions. This model includes a core-loss model of three-phase IMs, a model of machine mechanical and stray losses, and a model of power electronic losses in inverters. The drive loss model shows more than 90% accuracy and is used to design system-level loss minimization control of a motor drive system, which is integrated with the conventional volts-per-hertz control and indirect field-oriented control as case studies. The designed loss minimization control leads to more than 13% loss reduction than using rated flux for the testing motor drive under certain conditions. The proposed core-loss model is also used to design an improved model-based maximum torque-per-ampere control of IMs by considering core losses. Significant increase of torque-per-ampere capability could be possible for high-speed IMs. A simple model-based time-domain fault diagnosis method of four major IM faults is provided; it is nonintrusive, fast, and has excellent fault sensitivity and robustness to noise and harmonics. A fault-tolerant control scheme for sensor failures in closed-loop IM drives is also studied, where a multi-controller drive is proposed and uses different controllers with minimum hand-off transients when switching between controllers. A finite element analysis model of medium-voltage IMs is explored, where electromagnetic and thermal analyses are co-simulated. The torque rating and power density of the simulated machine could be increased by 14% with proper change of stator winding insulation material. The outcome of this dissertation is an advanced three-phase IM drive that is enhanced using model-based loss minimization control, fault detection and diagnosis of machine faults, fault-tolerant control under sensor failures, and performance-enhancement suggestions.

Book excerpt: The safe and reliable operation of technical systems is of great significance for the protection of human life and health, the environment, and of the vested economic value. The correct functioning of those systems has a profound impact also on production cost and product quality. The early detection of faults is critical in avoiding performance degradation and damage to the machinery or human life. Accurate diagnosis then helps to make the right decisions on emergency actions and repairs. Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) has developed into a major area of research, at the intersection of systems and control engineering, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics and statistics, and such application fields as chemical, electrical, mechanical and aerospace engineering. IFAC has recognized the significance of FDD by launching a triennial symposium series dedicated to the subject. The SAFEPROCESS Symposium is organized every three years since the first symposium held in Baden-Baden in 1991. SAFEPROCESS 2006, the 6th IFAC Symposium on Fault Detection, Supervision and Safety of Technical Processes was held in Beijing, PR China. The program included three plenary papers, two semi-plenary papers, two industrial talks by internationally recognized experts and 258 regular papers, which have been selected out of a total of 387 regular and invited papers submitted. * Discusses the developments and future challenges in all aspects of fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control * 8 invited and 36 contributed sessions included with a special session on the demonstration of process monitoring and diagnostic software tools
