Book excerpt: Classify amongst the family of highly filled elastomer, solid propellant is used in the solid propulsion media. In order to guarantee the integrity of the structure, the behavior of solid propellant must be highlighted. Solid propellant behavior is viscoelastic, but present several non-linearities due to his high volume fraction of filler. This study focuses on the impact of the prestrain on the viscoelastic properties. The objective here is to characterize this impact, model it, implement it into a numerical code and investigate this influence on the response of a complete motor under dynamic solicitations. To do this, the work is divided in several parts. First, the microstructure of the propellant is studied in order to determine the microscopic causes of the macroscopic non-linearities. Then viscoelastic properties are characterized, both into the time or frequency domain, using uni axial and bi axial solicitations. To perform bi axial tests, a bi axial traction device is developed. A base on the experimental results, a continuous model is identified to describe the viscoelastic properties as a function of the prestrain. This model is discretized, in order to be implemented into a constitutive law, which permits to give a relation between strain and stress into the material. The constitutive law is traduced into a finite element code, in order to perform computation. Simulations are done on a numerical model of a solid propulsion motor. The properties of the propellant are alternatively modeled by a linear viscoelastic and non-linear viscoelastic (developed in this study) model. The two responses of the complete structure under dynamic solicitations are then compared, to prove it is important to take into account the non-linear influence of the prestrain, and the necessity to exactly model the propellant behavior. In a similar way, future works could investigate the non-linearity induced by the dynamic part of the strain on the viscoelastic properties.

Book excerpt: CE TRAVAIL EST CONSACRE A LA MODELISATION NUMERIQUE DES PHENOMENES THERMO-MECANIQUES D'UN CORPS VISCOELASTIQUE EN GRANDES DEFORMATIONS. CETTE ETUDE EST APPLIQUEE AU CAS DU MOYEU ROTOR D'UN HELICOPTERE. DANS LA PREMIERE PARTIE, NOUS ECRIVONS LES EQUATIONS DE CONSERVATION DU COUPLAGE THERMO-VISCOELASTIQUE DANS LE CADRE DES GRANDES DEFORMATIONS, EN VARIABLES DE LAGRANGE, DANS LA CONFIGURATION DE REFERENCE DU MATERIAU. L'EQUATION DE LA CHALEUR COMPORTE UN TERME SOURCE FONCTION DES GRANDEURS PHYSIQUES DECRIVANT LE COMPORTEMENT THERMO-MECANIQUE DU MATERIAU. A PARTIR DE MESURES EXPERIMENTALES, UNE EXPRESSION DE CE TERME SOURCE EST DETERMINEE PAR METHODE INVERSE SOUS LA FORME D'UNE LOI DE TYPE ARRHENIUS. DANS LA DEUXIEME PARTIE, LES EQUATIONS DE CONSERVATION DU COUPLAGE FLUIDE-STRUCTURE SONT ECRITES EN VARIABLES D'EULER. POUR PRENDRE EN COMPTE LE MOUVEMENT DU SOLIDE, NOUS METTONS EN UVRE UNE TECHNIQUE NUMERIQUE DESTINEE A LOCALISER, A CHAQUE INSTANT, LA POSITION DE L'INTERFACE FLUIDE-STRUCTURE. L'ECOULEMENT ET LES TRANSFERTS THERMIQUES AUTOUR D'UN CYLINDRE DE SECTION CARREE SONT ETUDIES. LORSQU'IL EST MOBILE, ON OBSERVE UNE AMPLIFICATION DU DETACHEMENT TOURBILLONNAIRE A L'AVAL DU CYLINDRE ET UNE VARIATION IMPORTANTE DES ECHANGES THERMIQUES A L'INTERFACE.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. We begin by giving a simple example of a partial differential inequality that occurs in an elementary physics problem. We consider a fluid with pressure u(x, t) at the point x at the instant t that 3 occupies a region Q oflR bounded by a membrane r of negligible thickness that, however, is semi-permeable, i. e., a membrane that permits the fluid to enter Q freely but that prevents all outflow of fluid. One can prove then (cf. the details in Chapter 1, Section 2.2.1) that au (aZu azu aZu) (1) in Q, t>o, -a - du = g du = -a z + -a z + -a z t Xl X X3 z l g a given function, with boundary conditions in the form of inequalities u(X,t»o => au(x,t)/an=O, XEr, (2) u(x,t)=o => au(x,t)/an?:O, XEr, to which is added the initial condition (3) u(x,O)=uo(x). We note that conditions (2) are non linear; they imply that, at each fixed instant t, there exist on r two regions r~ and n where u(x, t) =0 and au (x, t)/an = 0, respectively. These regions are not prescribed; thus we deal with a "free boundary" problem.

Book excerpt: In their 1909 publication Théorie des corps déformables, Eugène and François Cosserat made a historic contribution to materials science by establishing the fundamental principles of the mechanics of generalized continua. The chapters collected in this volume showcase the many areas of continuum mechanics that grew out of the foundational work of the Cosserat brothers. The included contributions provide a detailed survey of the most recent theoretical developments in the field of generalized continuum mechanics and can serve as a useful reference for graduate students and researchers in mechanical engineering, materials science, applied physics and applied mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Science and Applied Mathematics: Mathematical Methods for Wave Phenomena focuses on the methods of applied mathematics, including equations, wave fronts, boundary value problems, and scattering problems. The publication initially ponders on first-order partial differential equations, Dirac delta function, Fourier transforms, asymptotics, and second-order partial differential equations. Discussions focus on prototype second-order equations, asymptotic expansions, asymptotic expansions of Fourier integrals with monotonic phase, method of stationary phase, propagation of wave fronts, and variable index of refraction. The text then examines wave equation in one space dimension, as well as initial boundary value problems, characteristics for the wave equation in one space dimension, and asymptotic solution of the Klein-Gordon equation. The manuscript offers information on wave equation in two and three dimensions and Helmholtz equation and other elliptic equations. Topics include energy integral, domain of dependence, and uniqueness, scattering problems, Green's functions, and problems in unbounded domains and the Sommerfeld radiation condition. The asymptotic techniques for direct scattering problems and the inverse methods for reflector imaging are also elaborated. The text is a dependable reference for computer science experts and mathematicians pursuing studies on the mathematical methods of wave phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phononic crystals are artificial periodic structures that can alter efficiently the flow of sound, acoustic waves, or elastic waves. They were introduced about twenty years ago and have gained increasing interest since then, both because of their amazing physical properties and because of their potential applications. The topic of phononic crystals stands as the cross-road of physics (condensed matter physics, wave propagation in inhomogeneous and periodic media) and engineering (acoustics, ultrasonics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering). Phononic crystals cover a wide range of scales, from meter-size periodic structures for sound in air to nanometer-size structures for information processing or thermal phonon control in integrated circuits. Phononic crystals have a definite relation with the topic of photonic crystals in optics. The marriage of phononic and photonic crystals also provides a promising structural basis for enhanced sound and light interaction. As the topic is getting popular, it is nowadays presented and discussed at various international conferences. After the first ten years during which the topic has remained mainly theoretical with a few proof-of-concept demonstrations in the literature, the evolution has been towards applications, instrumentation, and novel designs. The physical explanations for various effects are now well understood and efficient numerical methods and analysis tools have been developed. The book contains a comprehensive set of finite element model (FEM) scripts for solving basic phononic crystal problems. The scripts are short, easy to read, and efficient, allowing the reader to generate for him(her)self band structures for 2D and 3D phononic crystals, to compute Bloch waves, waveguide and cavity modes, and more.

Book excerpt: Phononics: Interface Transmission Tutorial Book Series provides an investigation of modern systems that includes a discrete matrix description. Classical continuous systems relying on the use of differential equations are recalled, showing that they generally have a specific limit on their corresponding modern matrix formulation. A detailed description of the mathematical languages that enables readers to find the composite system linear transmission properties is provided in the appendix. The physical model is described with exacting detail, and the bibliography is built to cite—in chronological order—all the scientists that have contributed over many years. Each volume is written with the aim of providing an up-to-date and concise summary of the present knowledge of interface transmission science, thus fostering the exchange of ideas among scientists interested in different aspects of interface transmission. The book serves as an introduction to advanced graduate students, researchers, and scientists with little study on the subject, and is also useful to help keep specialists informed on general progress in the field. Offers a unique approach on phononics from the interfacial transmission point-of-view Teaches the modern physics of interface transmission, in particular, phononics through composite systems Authored and edited by world-leading experts on interface transmission
