Book excerpt: Le but de cette étude était de documenter aussi précisément que possible le bilan de masse des aérosols minéraux désertiques qui sont des acteurs importants du système climatique terrestre puisqu'ils présentent un flux en masse annuel égal à environ la moitié du flux d'aérosols total. La mise en évidence de certains cas délicats à modéliser a conduit à mettre l'accent, dans ce travail, sur deux problèmes clefs de l'Afrique du nord : la région de Bodélé, du fait d'une topographie locale complexe, et les lignes de grains sahéliennes dont l'interaction avec les émissions d'aérosols minéraux reste encore largement inconnue. Cette étude a été réalisée à l'échelle méso haute résolution en utilisant le modèle Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) couplé en ligne avec le Dust Production Model (DPM) développé par Marticorena et Bergametti [1995] et Laurent [2005]. Afin d'examiner la capacité de ce modèle à reproduire les émissions d'aérosols minéraux dans la région complexe de Bodélé, nous avons tout d'abord modélisé la période correspondant à la campagne Bodélé Dust Experiment 2005 (BoDex 2005). Notre modèle a ainsi été capable de reproduire les caractéristiques météorologiques locales (principalement le vent dans les basses couches) ainsi que les concentrations en aérosols minéraux et la structure du panache observées pendant la campagne. Nous avons aussi vérifié que les aérosols émis depuis cette région du monde atteignent le continent sud américain. De plus, cette validation nous a permis de vérifier le constat établi par divers auteurs : les modèles à grande échelle (MCG) ont souvent du mal à reproduire correctement les champs de vent dans la région de Bodélé. Nous avons alors entrepris une étude climatologique (sur l'année 2001) sur une zone étendue autour de la région de Bodélé à différentes résolutions spatiales afin de caractériser les phénomènes de basses couches qui pourraient expliquer ce biais quasi-systématique des MCG. Ce travail a été validé grâce aux données de routine des stations de mesure de surface ainsi que grâce à l'imagerie satellite. Le deuxième cas sur lequel la validation de notre outil était nécessaire est constitué par les événements de ligne de grains qui se succèdent sur la zone sahélienne lors de l'été boréal. Cette validation a été réalisée sur un événement bien documenté des périodes d'observations spéciales 1 et 2 de la campagne Analyse Multidisciplinaire de la Mousson Africaine (AMMA)

Les aérosols organiques (AO) constituent une part importante de la masse particulaire totale. Or les mécanismes de formation des AO sont mal connus. En particulier, un enjeu actuel reste la définition des composés organiques semi-volatils (COSV) issus de l'oxydation dans l'atmosphère de composés organiques volatils (COV) qui vont condenser sur ou au sein des aérosols préexistants pour former les aérosols organiques secondaires (AOS). De récentes études en laboratoire ont montré la contribution des COV oxygénés (COVO) dans la formation de composés organiques faiblement volatils en phase aqueuse. Ces études restent cependant incomplètes et il y a un besoin urgent de mieux comprendre la photochimie en phase aqueuse des espèces polyfonctionnelles et d'étudier l'influence des paramètres pertinents pour l'atmosphère (pH, concentrations initiales, présence de composés inorganiques) sur les processus de formation des AOS. Ces voies de formation d'AOS doivent être prises en compte dans les modèles atmosphériques. L'objectif de ce travail est d'évaluer la formation potentielle d'AOS produits lors d'un évènement nuageux observé à la station du Puy de Dôme à l'aide de simulations réalisées avec le modèle Méso-NH. Le réalisme des simulations pour la formation des AOS dépend de l'intégration, dans le schéma chimique en phase gazeuse, des espèces chimiques pertinentes, notamment les COV et leurs produits. Le mécanisme ReLACS2 répond à cette exigence et prend en compte à la fois les précurseurs de l'ozone et la formation des AOS. Ce dernier mécanisme est couplé avec le module ORILAM-SOA qui intègre le partitionnement gaz/particule des espèces inorganiques et organiques et les processus de nucléation, de condensation/évaporation, d'activation et de dynamique des aérosols. Dans un premier temps, ce couplage est évalué sur trois cas d'études réels sur l'Europe dans des conditions météorologiques contrastées. Un exercice d'inter-comparaison des modèles Méso-NH et WRF/CHEM ainsi qu'une comparaison de ces modèles avec les observations in-situ sont réalisés. Dans un deuxième temps, un premier travail de développement conduit à inclure les COVO, solubles et légers (jusqu'à 4 carbones), et la réactivité en phase associée, dans le mécanisme ReLACS2, avant de considérer la formation des AOS en phase aqueuse. Un nouveau mécanisme chimique, ReLACS3, est crée. Parallèlement, un second développement permet d'inclure la part des noyaux de condensation nuageux (CCN) dans la chimie de la goutte d'eau pour obtenir un couplage entre la phase gazeuse, aqueuse et particulaire. Avant de tester ces développements, une simulation 2D idéalisée d'un nuage orographique, observé lors d'une campagne de mesures intensives à la station du puy-de-Dôme durant l'été 2011, est réalisée. Cette étude permet de mettre en évidence le potentiel impact de la réactivité en phase aqueuse et de l'activation des CCN sur la formation des AOS.

Book excerpt: L'objectif du travail présenté est de modéliser le cycle atmosphérique émission-transport-dépôt de l'aérosol désertique afin d'étudier son impact radiatif et de mettre en évidence l'effet qui peut en résulter sur la dynamique de l'atmosphère. On utilise pour cela un modèle méso-échelle, le RAMS, après l'avoir amplement aménagé, de sorte qu'il soit utilisable pour modéliser le cycle des aérosols désertiques pendant un événement couvrant une région (partie du Sahara et de l'océan Atlantique) de 15 millions de km2 durant plusieurs jours. L'aménagement du modèle comporte (i) un module décrivant la physique des soulèvements, incluant une cartographie des états de sol de la moitié Ouest du Sahara, (ii) une procédure décrivant le dépôt sec des particules par gravité, ce qui entraîne l'évolution de la granulométrie au cours du temps et (iii) un code radiatif détaillé permettant la prise en compte de l'aérosol. La détermination des caractéristiques optiques de l'aérosol désertique en fonction de sa granulométrie et de son indice complexe est réalisée pour alimenter le programme de calcul. Les résultats des simulations sont comparés avec les données d'observations disponibles (satellite, mesures photométriques sol, mesures météorologiques) et sont en général en bon accord avec ces dernières. Nous avons montré l'importance de la détermination des vents à la surface des zones d'émission ainsi que de la bonne description des reliefs et de la rugosité des surfaces, pour la qualité de cet accord. L'évaluation de l'impact radiatif de l'aérosol désertique est réalisée par comparaison des bilans radiatifs de l'atmosphère avec et sans aérosol. La même démarche est utilisée pour l'étude de la rétroaction entre la dynamique et la présence d'aérosol dans l'atmosphère. On montre que l'impact radiatif à une rétroaction importante sur les masses soulevées. En revanche l'effet sur la dynamique apparaît négligeable dans le cas étudié.
