Kohn In the past twenty years we have witnessed a renaissance of theoretical work on the macroscopic behavior of microscopically heterogeneous mate rials. This activity brings together a number of related themes, including: ( 1) the use of weak convergence as a rigorous yet general language for the discussion of macroscopic behavior; (2) interest in new types of questions, particularly the "G-closure problem," motivated in large part by applications of optimal control theory to structural optimization; (3) the introduction of new methods for bounding effective moduli, including one based on "com pensated compactness"; and (4) the identification of deep links between the analysis of microstructures and the multidimensional calculus of variations. This work has implications for many physical problems involving optimal design, composite materials, and coherent phase transitions. As a result it has received attention and support from numerous scientific communities, including engineering, materials science, and physics as well as mathematics. There is by now an extensive literature in this area. But for various reasons certain fundamental papers were never properly published, circu lating instead as mimeographed notes or preprints. Other work appeared in poorly distributed conference proceedings volumes. Still other work was published in standard books or journals, but written in Russian or French. The net effect is a sort of "gap" in the literature, which has made the subject unnecessarily difficult for newcomers to penetrate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In recent years, the use of composites and nanocomposites in various aerospace, automotive, marine, and civil engineering applications has been constantly increasing. Without exaggeration, it can be said that it is among the most complex and urgent problems of the mechanics of a deformable solid, since a number of specific phenomena and difficultly taken into account analytic factors arise during cyclic loading. They are primarily associated with the development of fatigue damage, with the need to assess the cyclic and structural instability of composite and nanocomposite materials. Currently, the problem of structural strength under cyclic loading is considered much more widely. This is due to the development of new industries in modern technology, such as aircraft, power engineering, aviation and rocket technology. The cyclic loading significantly reduces the creep resistance in the entire frequency range, and it became obvious that such traditional characteristics of strength as endurance limit, static creep limits and long-term static strength can no longer suffice the design criteria for reliable performance. As a result, new directions appeared in the section of high-temperature strength - cyclical creep and long-term cyclic strength. These circumstances led to the creation of new methods and means of determining the resistance of composites and nanocomposites materials and continuum damage development under cyclic loading; to the creation of appropriate physical models. Particularly relevant is the intensification of creep by high-frequency cyclic loading in composite materials, which usually occurs at high temperatures. Most of the known studies in the field of cyclic creep are experimental, and the direct use of number of cycles to define damage model cannot escape the empirical relation that predicts multi-stress level fatigue life well"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Fatigue has long been recognized as a mechanism that can provoke catastrophic material failure in structural applications and researchers are now turning to the development of prediction tools in order to reduce the cost of determining design criteria for any new material. Fatigue of Fiber-reinforced Composites explains these highly scientific subjects in a simple yet thorough way. Fatigue behavior of fiber-reinforced composite materials and structural components is described through the presentation of numerous experimental results. Many examples help the reader to visualize the failure modes of laminated composite materials and structural adhesively bonded joints. Theoretical models, based on these experimental data, are demonstrated and their capacity for fatigue life modeling and prediction is thoroughly assessed. Fatigue of Fiber-reinforced Composites gives the reader the opportunity to learn about methods for modeling the fatigue behavior of fiber-reinforced composites, about statistical analysis of experimental data, and about theories for life prediction under loading patterns that produce multiaxial fatigue stress states. The authors combine these theories to establish a complete design process that is able to predict fatigue life of fiber-reinforced composites under multiaxial, variable amplitude stress states. A classic design methodology is presented for demonstration and theoretical predictions are compared to experimental data from typical material systems used in the wind turbine rotor blade industry. Fatigue of Fiber-reinforced Composites also presents novel computational methods for modeling fatigue behavior of composite materials, such as artificial neural networks and genetic programming, as a promising alternative to the conventional methods. It is an ideal source of information for researchers and graduate students in mechanical engineering, civil engineering and materials science.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
