Book excerpt: CE MEMOIRE EST CONSACRE A LA MODELISATION DES INTERFACES DANS LES CALCULS TRIDIMENSIONNELS EN ELEMENTS FINIS D'OUVRAGES GEOTECHNIQUES (OUVRAGES EN SOL RENFORCE, CONTACTS DE MATERIAUX DIFFERENTS, ETC.). IL S'APPUIE SUR DES TRAVAUX ANTERIEURS DU LABORATOIRE CENTRAL DES PONTS ET CHAUSSEES QUI AVAIENT PRODUIT DES MODULES DU LOGICIEL CESAR-LCPC CONSACRES AU CONTACT ENTRE SOLIDES ELASTIQUES (TACT) ET ENTRE SOLIDES ELASTOPLASTIQUES (TCNL). CETTE RECHERCHE A DEVELOPPE UNE AUTRE LOI DE COMPORTEMENT D'INTERFACE DE TYPE ELASTOPLASTIQUE QUI SE COMBINE HARMONIEUSEMENT AVEC LES LOIS DE COMPORTEMENT UTILISEES POUR LES SOLS ET LES STRUCTURES EN CONTACT. CETTE LOI D'INTERFACE A ETE PROGRAMMEE DANS UN NOUVEAU MODULE DE CALCUL (MCNL-C). L'ANALYSE TRIDIMENSIONNELLE EN ELEMENTS FINIS D'UN MUR EXPERIMENTAL EN TERRE ARMEE, EDIFIE A BOURRON-MARLOTTE, CONTRIBUE A VALIDER CES DEVELOPPEMENTS NUMERIQUES. LA COMPARAISON DE CE CALCUL A UNE ETUDE BIDIMENSIONNELLE DU MEME PROBLEME MONTRE, D'UNE MANIERE GENERALE, UNE MEILLEURE CONCORDANCE DE L'ANALYSE TRIDIMENSIONNELLE AVEC LES RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX, NOTAMMENT EN TERMES DE TRACTION DANS LES ARMATURES ET DE PLASTICITE DANS L'OUVRAGE. CES RESULTATS ILLUSTRENT L'APPORT D'UNE MODELISATION PLUS REALISTE DES INTERFACES AUTOUR DE L'ARMATURE LINEAIRE DANS LA MODELISATION TRIDIMENSIONNELLE DE CE TYPE D'OUVRAGES.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationally, the mechanized excavation of tunnels has intensified in the last two decades, as the number of tunnels being constructed for subways and railway underpasses increases. The subject of mechanized tunnelling in urban areas has not previously received the attention that it deserves, despite there being specific hazards associated with the construction of tunnels in metropolitan areas, including poor ground conditions, water tables higher than the level of tunnels, and subsidence leading to damage to the existing structures on the surface. The application of technologies for achieving the stability of the tunnel and for minimizing surface settlement is described in this book. Accurate characterization of the ground; rigorous assessment and management of risk from design to maintenance; the correct choice of a tunnel boring machine and a plan for the advancement of the tunnel; specific excavation procedures and real-time monitoring of excavation parameters are all discussed in this thorough work.

Book excerpt: W S HALL School of Computing and Mathematics, University of Teesside, Middlesbrough, TS1 3BA UK G OLIVETO Division of Structural Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Catania, Viale A. Doria 6, 95125 Catania, Italy Soil-Structure Interaction is a challenging multidisciplinary subject which covers several areas of Civil Engineering. Virtually every construction is connected to the ground and the interaction between the artefact and the foundation medium may affect considerably both the superstructure and the foundation soil. The Soil-Structure Interaction problem has become an important feature of Structural Engineering with the advent of massive constructions on soft soils such as nuclear power plants, concrete and earth dams. Buildings, bridges, tunnels and underground structures may also require particular attention to be given to the problems of Soil-Structure Interaction. Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction is prominent in Earthquake Engineering problems. The complexity of the problem, due also to its multidisciplinary nature and to the fact of having to consider bounded and unbounded media of different mechanical characteristics, requires a numerical treatment for any application of engineering significance. The Boundary Element Method appears to be well suited to solve problems of Soil- Structure Interaction through its ability to discretize only the boundaries of complex and often unbounded geometries. Non-linear problems which often arise in Soil-Structure Interaction may also be treated advantageously by a judicious mix of Boundary and Finite Element discretizations.

Book excerpt: Since the middle of the 20th Century yield design approaches have been identified with the lower and upper bound theorem of limit analysis theory – a theory associated with perfect plasticity. This theory is very restrictive regarding the applicability of yield design approaches, which have been used for centuries for the stability of civil engineering structures. This book presents a theory of yield design within the original “equilibrium/resistance” framework rather than referring to the theories of plasticity or limit analysis; expressing the compatibility between the equilibrium of the considered structure and the resistance of its constituent material through simple mathematical arguments of duality and convex analysis results in a general formulation, which encompasses the many aspects of its implementation to various stability analysis problems. After a historic outline and an introductory example, the general theory is developed for the three-dimensional continuum model in a versatile form based upon simple arguments from the mathematical theory of convexity. It is then straightforwardly transposed to the one-dimensional curvilinear continuum, for the yield design analysis of beams, and the two-dimensional continuum model of plates and thin slabs subjected to bending. Field and laboratory observations of the collapse of mechanical systems are presented along with the defining concept of the multi-parameter loading mode. The compatibility of equilibrium and resistance is first expressed in its primal form, on the basis of the equilibrium equations and the strength domain of the material defined by a convex strength criterion along with the dual approach in the field of potentially safe loads, as is the highlighting of the role implicitly played by the theory of yield design as the fundamental basis of the implementation of the ultimate limit state design (ULSD) philosophy with the explicit introduction of resistance parameters. Contents 1. Origins and Topicality of a Concept. 2. An Introductory Example of the Yield Design Approach. 3. The Continuum Mechanics Framework. 4. Primal Approach of the Theory of Yield Design. 5. Dual Approach of the Theory of Yield Design. 6. Kinematic Exterior Approach. 7. Ultimate Limit State Design from the Theory of Yield Design. 8. Book excerpt: Transport engineering structures are subjected to loads that vary in both time and space. In general mechanics parlance such loads are called moving loads. It is the aim of the book to analyze the effects of this type of load on various elements, components, structures and media of engineering me chanics. In recent years all branches of transport have experienced great advances characterized by increasingly higher speeds and weights of vehicles. As a result, structures and media over or in which the vehicles move have been subjected to vibrations and dynamic stresses far larger than ever before. The author has studied vibrations of elastic and inelastic bodies and structures under the action of moving loads for many years. In the course of his career he has published a number of papers dealing with various aspects of the problem. On the strength of his studies he has arrived at the conclusion that the topic has so grown in scope and importance as to merit a comprehensive treatment. The book is the outcome of his attempt to do so in a single monograph.

This is a very new and effective way of tunnel construction. The ADECO-RS approach makes a clear distinction between the design and the construction stages and allows reliable forecasts of construction times and costs to be made. It uses the advance core (the core of ground ahead of the face) as a structural tool for the long and short term stabilisation of tunnels, after its rigidity has first been regulated using conservation techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explores the theory of Cosserat continuum mechanics, and covers fundamental tools, general laws and major models, as well as applications to the mechanics of granular media. While classical continuum mechanics is based on the axiom that the stress tensor is symmetric, theories such as that expressed in the seminal work of the brothers Eugène and François Cosserat are characterized by a non-symmetric stress tensor. The use of von Mises motor mechanics is introduced, for the compact mathematical description of the mechanics and statics of Cosserat continua, as the Cosserat continuum is a manifold of oriented “rigid particles” with 3 dofs of displacement and 3 dofs of rotation, rather than a manifold of points with 3 dofs of displacement. Here, the analysis is restricted to infinitesimal particle displacements and rotations. This book is intended as a valuable supplement to standard Continuum Mechanics courses, and graduate students as well as researchers in mechanics and applied mathematics will benefit from its self-contained text, which is enriched by numerous examples and exercises.
