Book excerpt: This report describes the construction, operation and performance of large-scale (90-cm-inside diameter and 150-cm-high) lysimeters. These lysimeters can continuously monitor soil moisture flow, soil temperature and redox potential with depth, and sample soil water and soil air with depth. The rate of soil water movement to the groundwater was continuously monitored by a rain gage and a recorder. To simulatate field conditions, an automatic spray system was developed; this system is also described in this report. The total cost of one lysimeter is approximately $650 (1975 estimate). The lysimeters are being used to validate a biophysical-chemical model of wastewater renovation by application to land. Detailed blueprints of the lysimeters are kept at CRREL and are available on request. (Author).

Book excerpt: The main aim of this paper is to present some new and general results, ap plicable to the the equations of two phase flow, as formulated in geothermal reservoir engineering. Two phase regions are important in many geothermal reservoirs, especially at depths of order several hundred metres, where ris ing, essentially isothermal single phase liquid first begins to boil. The fluid then continues to rise, with its temperature and pressure closely following the saturation (boiling) curve appropriate to the fluid composition. Perhaps the two most interesting theoretical aspects of the (idealised) two phase flow equations in geothermal reservoir engineering are that firstly, only one component (water) is involved; and secondly, that the densities of the two phases are so different. This has led to the approximation of ignoring capillary pressure. The main aim of this paper is to analyse some of the consequences of this assumption, especially in relation to saturation changes within a uniform porous medium. A general analytic treatment of three dimensional flow is considered. Pre viously, three dimensional modelling in geothermal reservoirs have relied on numerical simulators. In contrast, most of the past analytic work has been restricted to one dimensional examples.

The general feeling emerged that the complexity and multifaceted nature of the problem, even though perhaps not fully recognized at that time. clearly demanded a systems analysis approach. No wonder. then. that the request made by the Hungarian Member Organization of nASA to adopt Lake Balaton as a "real life laboratory" for an nASA case study fell on fertile ground. the more so since it appeared that shallow lake eutrophication had received less attention and was less well understood than that of deep lakes. And so the nASA Lake Balaton Case Study began. with the appointment of Gerrit van Straten as the first leader of the project.
