Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : Bioenergy has received increasing attention as potential replacement for fossil fuels in energy production. This is to a great extend due to the expected environmental benefits from such replacement. However, the share of the US energy generated by biomass has remained stagnant over the past decade, as the implementation of bioenergy can increase only if it can be justified from economic, environmental and social perspective. One of the critical aspects required for increase is cost-effective transportation. Transportation is critical to bioenergy production, as the intrinsic characteristics of biomass cause transportation to account for a high proportion of costs in the overall biomass supply chain. This also makes transportation one of the most important criteria in terms of optimized supply chain. This dissertation concentrates on investigation of multimodal alternatives for woody biomass transportation and logistics. More specifically, the research developed and three MILP transportation optimization models that use region specific data in the Great Lakes States to evaluate alternative logistics systems for dedicated and co-firing bioenergy plants. The research first reviewed peer-reviewed articles focusing on the biomass transportation and logistics to enhance the understanding of the current state of research on this topic (Chapter 1). Based on the knowledge obtained from past literature and the acquisition of region specific data set, analytical models were developed and tested in case studies. In addition, sensitivity analysis was used to investigate the importance of individual parameters on the modeling outcomes. The first analytical model was developed to investigate the relationship between sustainable transportation cost and location of a dedicated bioenergy plant. This sustainability is incorporated in the analysis by combining all three main sustainability components: economic, environmental, and social factors (Chapter 2). The next two models concentrated on transportation logistics as part of decision-making for biomass co-firing on existing coal power plants. To take advantage of co-firing, a plant must pay attention to the sourcing and blending strategy of feedstocks and combine them as efficiently as possible. An analytical model was developed to determine the preferred logistics system for biomass co-firing that compares the conventional woody biomass logistics system with the option for advanced woody biomass logistics system that includes torrefaction process to upgrade the feedstock (Chapter 3). Finally, an analytical model was developed to determine optimal co-firing ratio that minimized total logistics costs. The approach also integrated the advanced logistics system and the optimized co-firing ratio to investigate the impact of potential government tax credits on the strategy (Chapter 4). To test the models in Chapters 3 and 4, they were both applied to case studies of 26 actual coal power plants in the Great Lakes States. The studies covered in this dissertation revealed that 1) multimodal transportation is essential when establishing larger biomass plants or increasing the scale of co-firing. On the other hand, the larger plants help to reduce the transportation and logistics costs, and as such support the increase in the use of biomass. 2) Local conditions have great impact on biomass transportation logistics, as the performance of woody biomass logistics system highly depends on accessibility of local transportation network, such as loading/unloading sites along rail lines. 3) When investigating logistics cost differences, plant capacity, biomass availability nearby, and average distance from biomass collecting sites are parameters with consistently high impact on the preferred solution, although the impact of a certain parameter may be opposite on a specific model or case study. 4) There would be potential benefits from woody biomass in the Great Lakes States, but inclusion of transportation and logistics system analysis that consider various types of supply networks and torrefaction process are essential to select the most suitable system.

Book excerpt: In the growing concerns towards global environmental qualities and sustainable feedstocks supplies, scientific and technological efforts were intensified to utilize alternative renewable resources. In this regard, biomass appeared to be one of the potential feedstocks because it is generally carbon neutral and essentially renewable. Furthermore, biomass is virtually found in every part of the world in abundance and could provide socio-economic benefits. However, if it is not managed properly, biomass will be less competitive due to several issues that are associated with its supply chain. Typical biomass supply chain has a series of activities such as growing, harvesting, transporting, aggregating, and conversion which systematic and efficient flows of materials from the fields to the users are highly important. Biomass has competing uses, different kinds and origins which are potentially exploitable, poor geographic distributions for retrieving and transporting, and variations in physical and chemical properties. It is difficult to make informed decision for any biomass utilization project without having an optimal supply chain. This research intended to solve those issues by modeling and optimizing biomass supply chains for manufacturing energy, chemicals, and materials based on their respective processing routes. The aim was not only to focus on energy production from biomass but also to include chemicals and materials because of several factors such as an emerging cost competitive energy resource such as shale gas, highly volatile energy prices, and customer's preparedness and acceptances. Furthermore, it also could leverage biomass plantations on the producers' sides. The biomass supply chain model has considered annual profitability of producing products as the performance indicator. It was derived from revenues of selling the products subtracted all the associated costs such as biomass cost, transportation cost, production cost, and emission treatment costs from transportation and production activities. It summed up simultaneously all the profitable processing options that have existed in the superstructure to yield the optimal value, while a single ownership was assumed for the whole supply chain's facilities. Three optimization models have been developed and implemented in GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System).

Book excerpt: Biomass is one of the most efficient renewable energy sources to increase energy security and reduce the environmental issues. It could be utilised as back-up or main source of energy in off-grid remote northern communities of Canada, which are currently rely on fossil-fuels. However, small scale of energy demand, necessity of continuous energy supply, and spatial dispersion of such remote communities restrict the competitiveness and efficiency of bioenergy. Managing bioenergy supply chain from supplying biomass to conversion facilities is vital to overcome the challenges in expanding bioenergy production. In this sense, forming collaboration among the entities plays a key role to improve the economy of scale and efficiency of bioenergy production. In the literature, several coordination strategies resulted in varying impacts on entities' profit or cost. As such, analyzing and comparing them in various conditions could assure selecting the most efficient one. This study recommends quantity discounts and cost-sharing coordination policies to promote the biomass level at communities in a cost-efficient manner through establishing bundling orders and benefiting the lower cost. This dissertation employs a system dynamics approach to simulate coordination scenarios and make the optimal decisions in a biomass supply chain including suppliers, hubs, and end-user. On that basis, performing a comparative analysis under various conditions and assumptions provide insights into the impact of coordination and selecting the preferred choice of coordination strategy for each player. The simulation-based optimization model is applied to a bioenergy supply chain case study in Canada's off‐grid northern communities. The results of this research point to a significant role of coordination in improving the cost efficiency as well as the level of biomass-based energy production.

Book excerpt: Biofuels have been promoted by governmental policies for reducing fossil fuel dependency and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as facilitating regional economic growth. Comprehensive model analysis is needed to assess the economic and environmental impacts of developing bioenergy production systems. For cellulosic biofuel production and supply in particular, existing studies have not accounted for the inter-dependencies between multiple participating decision makers and simultaneously incorporated uncertainties and risks associated with the linked production systems. This dissertation presents a methodology that incorporates uncertainty element to the existing integrated modeling framework specifically designed for advanced biofuel production systems using dedicated energy crops as feedstock resources. The goal of the framework is to support the bioenergy industry for infrastructure and supply chain development. The framework is flexible to adapt to different topological network structures and decision scopes based on the modeling requirements, such as on capturing the interactions between the agricultural production system and the multi-refinery bioenergy supply chain system with regards to land allocation and crop adoption patterns, which is critical for estimating feedstock supply potentials for the bioenergy industry. The methodology is also particularly designed to incorporate system uncertainties by using stochastic programming models to improve the resilience of the optimized system design. The framework is used to construct model analyses in two case studies. The results of the California biomass supply model estimate that feedstock pretreatment via combined torrefaction and pelletization reduces delivered and transportation cost for long-distance biomass shipment by 5% and 15% respectively. The Pacific Northwest hardwood biofuels application integrates full-scaled supply chain infrastructure optimization with agricultural economic modeling and estimates that bio-jet fuels can be produced at costs between 4 to 5 dollars per gallon, and identifies areas suitable for simultaneously deploying a set of biorefineries using adopted poplar as the dedicated energy crop to produce biomass feedstocks. This application specifically incorporates system uncertainties in the crop market and provides an optimal system design solution with over 17% improvement in expected total profit compared to its corresponding deterministic model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woody biomass is most widely used for energy production. In the United States, roughly 2% of the energy consumed annually is generated from wood and wood-derived fuels. Woody biomass needs to be preprocessed and pretreated before it is used for energy production. Preprocessing and pretreatments improve the physical, chemical, and rheological properties, making them more suitable for feeding, handling, storage transportation, and conversion. Mechanical preprocessing technologies such as size reduction and densification, help improve particle size distribution and density. Thermal pretreatment can reduce grinding energy and torrefied ground biomass has improved sphericity, particle surface area, and particle size distribution. This book focuses on several specific topics, such as understanding how forest biomass for biofuels impacts greenhouse gas emissions; mechanical preprocessing, such as densification of forest residue biomass, to improve physical properties such as size, shape, and density; the impact of thermal pretreatment temperatures on woody biomass chemical composition, physical properties, and microstructure for thermochemical conversions such as pyrolysis and gasification; the grindability of torrefied pellets; use of wood for gasification and as a filter for tar removal; and understanding the pyrolysis kinetics of biomass using thermogravimetric analyzers.
