Book excerpt: This thesis develops a model, called Area Motion Search (AMS), that determines the detection probability for a patrolling sensor searching for a randomly moving target in a fixed area. The AMS model reduces to exhaustive search when the target is stationary and to random search when the searcher is stationary. Thus, AMS is a bridge between these two often used models in search theory, and provides a unified treatment of both.

Book excerpt: In this study, the author uses a MATLAB simulation to develop and test a generalization of the traditional Random Search model which allows both the searcher and target to move and to be in different, but overlapping, areas. Also the best evasion speed for a randomly moving target against a Systematic Search is studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with a review of basic results in optimal search for a stationary target. It then develops the theory of optimal search for a moving target, providing algorithms for computing optimal plans and examples of their use. Next it develops methods for computing optimal search plans involving multiple targets and multiple searchers with realistic operational constraints on search movement. These results assume that the target does not react to the search. In the final chapter there is a brief overview of mostly military problems where the target tries to avoid being found as well as rescue or rendezvous problems where the target and the searcher cooperate. Larry Stone wrote his definitive book Theory of Optimal Search in 1975, dealing almost exclusively with the stationary target search problem. Since then the theory has advanced to encompass search for targets that move even as the search proceeds, and computers have developed sufficient capability to employ the improved theory. In this book, Stone joins Royset and Washburn to document and explain this expanded theory of search. The problem of how to search for moving targets arises every day in military, rescue, law enforcement, and border patrol operations.

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this project is to estimate the effectiveness of a systematic search conducted against a randomly moving target and to generate target density curves in the search area after the search. In this problem, searcher course and speed are fixed known values. The target course is also fixed, but is randomly selected. The measure of effectiveness (MOE) is the total equivalent area searched. The approach to the problem in this project is a modification of the methods of B.O. Koopman in 'Search and Screening . The method first calculates the target location density rho at each point in a specified area A, and then integrates (1-rho) over A. The result is a measure of how effectively area A was searched. After a brief overview, authors Washburn and Kress present individual chapters on shooting without feedback; shooting with feedback; target defense; attrition models; game theory and wargames; search; unmanned aerial vehicles; and terror and insurgency. Three appendices provide a review of basic probability concepts, probability distributions, and Markov models; an introduction to optimization models; and a discussion of Monte-Carlo simulations. Drawing on their many years of experience at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, Washburn and Kress have created a reference that will provide the tools and techniques for analysts involved in the underpinnings of combat decisions. This is a book that can be used as a military manual, reference book, and textbook for military courses on this vital subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need to search effectively for objects presents itself in many civilian and military applications. This thesis develops and tests six heuristics and an optimal branch and bound procedure to solve the heretofore uninvestigated problem of searching for a Markovian moving target using multiple searchers. For more than one searcher, the time needed to guarantee an optimal solution for the problems considered is prohibitive. The heuristics represent a wide variety of approaches and consist of two based on the expected number of detections, two genetic algorithm implementations, one based on solving partial problems optimally, and local search. A heuristic based on the expected number of detections obtains solutions within two percent of the best known solution for each one, two, and three searcher test problem considered. For one and two searcher problems, the same heuristic's solution time is less than that of other heuristics considered. A Genetic Algorithm implementation performs acceptably for one and two searcher problems and highlights its ability, effectively solving three searcher problems in as little as 20% of, other heuristic run-times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for determining the optimal or near-optimal search path for the wake of a moving target when the searcher's motion is constrained is presented. The problem uses a Markov motion model in discrete time and space for the target and assumes that the searcher is constrained to move only from the currently occupied cell j to a specified set of 'neighbor cells', I(j). First, a discussion of the complexity of the problem is presented. Next, an extension of T.J. Stewart's constrained searcher algorithm is given. Stewart's algorithm uses S.S. Brown's unconstrained searcher algorithm to calculate bounds on the probability of nondetection. An extension of Brown's algorithm to allow the use of a wake detector is also given. Several alternatives to both algorithms are offered and compared. Finally, some further extensions to the algorithms are suggested. (Author).
