Book excerpt: Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth ...” (Lk. 10:21 NIV) Jesus called God his Father, and he taught his followers to think of God as their Father too, saying, “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven ...’ ” (Mt. 6:9 NIV) The Scripture describes our Father God as loving and compassionate, just yet gracious, merciful and forgiving. But what if hearing the words “Father in heaven” evokes in our children’s minds negative images from adverse experiences they have had with their own fathers on earth? As explained in MODELING THE HEAVENLY FATHER TO EARTHLY CHILDREN, we Christian dads, as well as grandfathers and other influential male adults, have the responsibility and privilege to raise our boys and girls, sons and daughters of all ages, in such a way as to give them an accurate and positive understanding of who God really is. We do this by emulating and modeling divine attributes like justice and abhorrence of evil, but also kindness, wisdom, communication, compassion, and most certainly love. This will take dedication and perseverance; nonetheless, we must rise to this challenge, for our kids will be watching us and learning about what “heavenly Father” really means.

Book excerpt: God is the perfect father, and you can improve your parenting style by looking to Him. He sets the example for how to be a provider, protector, teacher, and disciplinarian. This guidebook to Christian parenting explores the attributes of God a parent should try to emulate. It also brings to light four ways that Jesus grew in Luke 2:52, developing intellectually, physically, spiritually, and socially. As a parent, you can help your children follow in their saviors footsteps. Just as the Lord disciplines those He loves, parents must discipline their children. Heaven on Earth carefully describes biblical principles to help parents provide the environment children need. It offers proper and healthy techniques to aid parents in leading children to honor and respect not only their parents but ultimately the Lord. Whats more, it draws a line between appropriate and abusive actions to control childrens behavior. Parents can proactively develop a disciplinary plan to guard against crossing these boundaries. Parents face many challenges to lead and guide the family in godly ways, and many struggle with the feelings of anger and failure. Find encouragement and strength through the power of Gods Word and the strength of the Holy Spirit, and get practical help in facing rebellious and wayward children. You can be inspired to overcome any obstacle, and raise your children for the glory of God.

Book excerpt: The most important disciple a parent will make is within their own home, and yet this is the most difficult disciple to make. Family Discipleship by Matt Chandler and Adam Griffin helps readers develop a sustainable rhythm of gospel-centered discipleship through a guided framework focusing on moments of discipleship in 3 key areas: time (intentional time gathering your family around gospel activities or conversations), moments (leveraging opportunities throughout the day), and milestones (celebrating significant life events). Each section provides parents with Scriptures to consider, questions to answer, structures to implement, and ideas to try out as they seek to see Christ formed in their children. Here is a book that begins with the end in mind, offering ideas and examples of what gospel-centered family discipleship looks like, helping parents design their own discipleship plan as they seek to raise children in the love and fear of the Lord.

Book excerpt: Nothing can replace the influence that a father has in the life of his child. A daughter looks to her father as a measure to gauge the man she will ultimately offer herself as a life-mate in matrimony. A son looks to his father as a role model to whom he one day will become. God has given us the ideal blueprint of a father through His word and His daily interactions with we, His children. Our heavenly Father begins His relationship by assuring each of us that He loved us so much that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus. It is through His relationship with Jesus that a good father begins to mirror his relationship with his children. Certainly, mine did! I was completely blessed to have a loving earthly father who, unbeknownst to me, was ushering me into eternal relationship with our heavenly Father. But on April of 2007, my entire life changed when my best friend, my mentor, my pastor, my father died. Our FatherS Who Art in Heaven is a collection of life lessons that I learned from my earthly father and the biblical revelations our heavenly Father has given to help better understand those life lessons. Every day, God is speaking to us through His word to teach, lead, and prepare us for all of the trials life brings. Whether your father is still present in the flesh or sainted with the Lord, this book will reveal the plan of unconditional love of both an earthly and a heavenly father that has been prepared for you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bible scholar Christian Brady, an expert on Old Testament lament, was as prepared as a person could be for the death of a child—which is to say, not nearly well enough. When his eight-year-old son died suddenly from a fast-moving blood infection, Brady heard the typical platitudes about accepting God's will and knew that quiet acceptance was not the only godly way to grieve. With deep faith, knowledge of Scripture, and the wisdom that comes only from experience, Brady guides readers grieving losses and setbacks of all kinds in voicing their lament to God, reflecting on the nature of human existence, and persevering in hope. Brady finds that rather than an image of God managing every event and action in our lives, the biblical account describes the very real world in which we all live, a world full of hardship and calamity that often comes unbidden and unmerited. Yet, it also is a world into which God lovingly intrudes to bring comfort, peace, and grace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of discipleship in Matthew has been explained in several ways using different identity defining terms from the gospel. Such as one who does the will of God, one who practises the greater righteousness, one who becomes like a child, one who carries the cross etc.. The present study identifies the extensively but selectively used relational appellation Father for God in the gospel as the most important key for understanding the identity of the disciples. By examining all the passages where this appellation is used to refer to god as the father of the disciples, this study shows that discipleship is viewed in Matthew as a process of becoming children of God. Five different dimensions of discipleship - christological, ecclesiological, missiological, eschatological, and ethical -are integrated in this study. Discipleship is a process of becoming children of god: through Jesus, the son, one can become a child of god (christological); by responding affirmatively to jesus and to his message one enters the earthly family of God and continues his/her journey with other brothers and sisters (ecclesiological); through their life witness and teachings the disciples attract and invite other people to join them in their process of becoming children of God (missiological ); one becomes irrevocably a child of God only in the kingdom (eschatological); to reach this state one should do the will of God and practise the greater righteousness (ethical).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elmer Towns's Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough has become must-reading as this powerful spiritual discipline of fasting has seen a revival among followers of Christ. Now Towns digs deeper into one of the most popular forms of fasting today, the Daniel Fast. With an emphasis on a healthy, simple diet, the Daniel Fast is named after the prophet Daniel who participated in a partial fast for spiritual purposes. Daniel was taken captive into Babylon when he was sixteen years old. The Babylonian king wanted the young prophet to help him administer his rule over the captive Jews--and he wanted to "Babylon-ize" Daniel, to make the young man of God more like him. The first step the king took in his campaign was to provide a sumptuous feast to tempt Daniel--food fit for a king-- basically fattening comfort foods. In response, the prophet refrained from the king's table, choosing instead to eat only vegetables and to drink only water. He honored God over the king. Dr. Elmer Towns introduces readers to the spiritual, physical, and mental basics of the Daniel Fast, coaching them through either a ten-day or twenty-one-day period of renewal, and he includes original Daniel Fast recipes created by executive chef John P. Perkins. Dr. Towns addresses practical questions, such as what to eat and when, as well as how to pray effectively. Readers will learn how to encounter God during their fast, how to worship through self-discipline, and how to pray for specific answers. They will also explore the role of weeping, repentance, and spiritual warfare in their life of faith. Daniel is a model to God's people of someone who chooses spiritual nourishment over bodily satisfaction, in The Daniel Fast for Spiritual Breakthrough, God's people can learn to follow his example.

Book excerpt: Are we living in a "post-father" era? This book is a wake-up call to men and women, challenging them to understand the crisis of fatherlessness in the world and to examine its impact on our culture and in individual lives. The author also identifies the different types of father wounds, the specific scars that men and women carry, and provides personal steps for healing and experiencing God's Father Love. As a generation, one of the biggest issues we face is fatherlessness. We have a generation of boys, raised by women, who don't know how to be a man, husband, or father; and a generation of girls raised without the protection, affirmation, or wholesome affection of a father. In this book, Waylon Ward tackles these tough issues head on. Dr. John A. King Best-selling author of It's a Guy Thing: Helping Guys Become Men, Husbands, and Fathers Waylon Ward is an experienced pastoral counselor and life coach who has focused on healing the wounds of father deprivation for more than 30 years. From his own childhood and the life experiences of thousands of people he has counseled, he has learned how to enable individuals to find healing from these wounds by coming home to the loving heart of God the Father. Waylon and his wife, Lynn, founded Mercy Matters, a ministry of counseling, teaching and restoration. The Global Fathering Initiative (GFI) was created in 2008 to address the fathering crisis in our world and to provide healing for wounded men, women and children. I remember reading this statement from the book, The Psychology of Christian Personality by Ernest Ligon in the early 1960s. I was struck by it, because as a child growing up, I was told just the opposite.Subsequent empirical evidence has shown that Ligon was correct, but why? Religion is supposed to change people. Where was the disconnect? Does religion change people, or maybe do people change religion? In various ways, this statement has been a source of direction and study for me over my forty plus years in teaching and counseling. This book explores these questions and possible answers in light of mental health and the integration of Psychology and Religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I will put my trust in Him ... Behold I and the children which God has given me – Hebrews 2:13 This book is different from most books on raising children. It is a plea for the parents to truly know and walk with God – for them to love God and His Word. In the correct order, focusing first on the parents, Andrew Murray then urges parents to sincerely and consistently love their children and in all tenderness and gentleness teach them as God also teaches us. Children are a most precious gift that we receive from God, and they deserve our very best. Our faithful training will not be lost on our children; this is a promise found over and over again in the Scriptures. If our hearts are right towards God and our children, the world's influence will not impact our children. We can and must exercise faith, so our children and our children's children will be able to impact the world for Christ and inherit eternal blessings. A few of the parenting topics covered in this book: · * What sin did to the family and how to redeem that which was lost. · * The distinct and also shared roles of fathers and mothers. · * How and why to teach children manners. · * How to show children the Scriptures in a way that takes root in the heart. · * How to teach with a quiet, gentle spirit, as God teaches us. · * How to intercede effectively in prayer for our children.
