Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Model of Software Project Management Dynamics This paper is a study of the dynamics of software project management. In Section (I) we argue for the attractiveness of using computer modeling techniques in the study and design of complex social systems. In particular, we advocate the use of the modeling, simulation, and analysis techniques of System Dynamics. In Section (II) we, then, present a System Dynamics model we developed for software project management. The model's three major subsystems: the human resource management subsystem, the planning and control subsystem, and the software production subsystem, are discussed in some detail. Finally, in Section (III), the dynamic behavior of the model is analyzed using a series of simulation runs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impact of Schedule Estimation on Software Project Behavior Schedule estimation of software development projects has historically been, and continues to be, a major difficulty associated with the management of software development. Research efforts attempting to develop better estimation tools need to address two important issues: first, whether a more accurate estimation tool is necessarily a better tool, and secondly, how to adequately measure the accuracy of a (new) estimation method. Our objective in this paper is to address these two issues. A series of industry interviews and literature study culminated in the development of a system dynamics model of software development project management. The model served as a laboratory vehicle for conducting simulation experiments on the impact of schedule estimation on software project behavior. The study produced two interesting results: first, that a different estimate creates a different project. The important implication that follows from this is that (new) software estimation tools cannot be adequately judged on the basis of how accurately they can estimate historical projects. Secondly, that a more accurate estimate is not necessarily a better estimate. Keywords: Software Project Management, Schedule Estimation, Programmer Behavior, Simulation Model, System Dynamics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Models for Project Management 53632?trade-off models may exist for individual sub - systems perhaps imbedded in a simulation model of that system. What is suggested here is that we bring these models explicitly into the information system and wherever possible include information from the complete project. An example of this might be the implementation of a global weight - cost trade - off model that would show that it is cheaper to buy weight reduction in the landing gear than in the engines, and therefore the weight and budget constraints of both groups should be adjusted. Although we discuss trade - offs and centralization in the time - cost dimension it should be remembered that. Book excerpt: This Seventh Edition of Donald Reifer's popular, bestselling tutorial summarizes what software project managers need to know to be successful on the job. The text provides pointers and approaches to deal with the issues, challenges, and experiences that shape their thoughts and performance. To accomplish its goals, the volume explores recent advances in dissimilar fields such as management theory, acquisition management, globalization, knowledge management, licensing, motivation theory, process improvement, organization dynamics, subcontract management, and technology transfer. Software Management provides software managers at all levels of the organization with the information they need to know to develop their software engineering management strategies for now and the future. The book provides insight into management tools and techniques that work in practice. It also provides sufficient instructional materials to serve as a text for a course in software management. This new edition achieves a balance between theory and practical experience. Reifer systematically addresses the skills, knowledge, and abilities that software managers, at any level of experience, need to have to practice their profession effectively. This book contains original articles by leaders in the software management field written specifically for this tutorial, as well as a collection of applicable reprints. About forty percent of the material in this edition has been produced specifically for the tutorial. Contents: * Introduction * Life Cycle Models * Process Improvement * Project Management * Planning Fundamentals * Software Estimating * Organizing for Success * Staffing Essentials * Direction Advice * Visibility and Control * Software Risk Management * Metrics and Measurement * Acquisition Management * Emerging Management Topics "The challenges faced by software project managers are the gap between what the customers can envision and the reality on the ground and how to deal with the risks associated with this gap in delivering a product that meets requirements on time and schedule at the target costs. This tutorial hits the mark by providing project managers, practitioners, and educators with source materials on how project managers can effectively deal with this risk." -Dr. Kenneth E. Nidiffer, Systems & Software Consortium, Inc. "The volume has evolved into a solid set of foundation works for anyone trying to practice software management in a world that is increasingly dependent on software release quality, timeliness, and productivity." -Walker Royce, Vice President, IBM Software Services-Rational

Such actions are not carried out in vacuum, but, as Figure 1 suggests, they are affected by the other subsystems. For example, the project's hiring rate is a function of the workforce level needed to complete the project on a certain planned completion date. Similarly, what workforce is available has direct. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of this book is known as dynamic scheduling, and is used to refer to three dimensions of project management and scheduling: the construction of a baseline schedule and the analysis of a project schedule’s risk as preparation of the project control phase during project progress. This dynamic scheduling point of view implicitly assumes that the usability of a project’s baseline schedule is rather limited and only acts as a point of reference in the project life cycle. Consequently, a project schedule should especially be considered as nothing more than a predictive model that can be used for resource efficiency calculations, time and cost risk analyses, project tracking and performance measurement, and so on. In this book, the three dimensions of dynamic scheduling are highlighted in detail and are based on and inspired by a combination of academic research studies at Ghent University (www.ugent.be), in-company trainings at Vlerick Business School (www.vlerick.com) and consultancy projects at OR-AS (www.or-as.be). First, the construction of a project baseline schedule is a central theme throughout the various chapters of the book, and is discussed from a complexity point of view with and without the presence of project resources. Second, the creation of an awareness of the weak parts in a baseline schedule is discussed at the end of the two baseline scheduling parts as schedule risk analysis techniques that can be applied on top of the baseline schedule. Third, the baseline schedule and its risk analyses can be used as guidelines during the project control step where actual deviations can be corrected within the margins of the project’s time and cost reserves. The second edition of this book has seen corrections, additions and amendments in detail throughout the book. Moreover Chapter 15 on "Dynamic Scheduling with ProTrack" has been completely rewritten and extended with a section on "ProTrack as a research tool".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a definitive introduction to models of computation for the design of complex, heterogeneous systems. It has a particular focus on cyber-physical systems, which integrate computing, networking, and physical dynamics. The book captures more than twenty years of experience in the Ptolemy Project at UC Berkeley, which pioneered many design, modeling, and simulation techniques that are now in widespread use. All of the methods covered in the book are realized in the open source Ptolemy II modeling framework and are available for experimentation through links provided in the book. The book is suitable for engineers, scientists, researchers, and managers who wish to understand the rich possibilities offered by modern modeling techniques. The goal of the book is to equip the reader with a breadth of experience that will help in understanding the role that such techniques can play in design.
