Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of cure of thermosets is rather complex, and good knowledge of the various steps and different problems is necessary for the user. For instance, the following basic facts characterise the cure of thermosets: 1. In the same way as rubbers, thermosets are generally polymerised and processed in a simple operation which involves the irreversible transformation of a low molecular weight resin in viscous liquid state into a solid network polymer. The process of cure is thus much more important for thermosets or rubbers than for thermo plastics, because if something goes wrong during the cure process of thermosets, the final products may have undersirable properties and will be of no use or value, while the thermoplastic material can be melted again to make a new material. 2. In contrast with rubbers, a high exothermic cure reaction is the aspect of fundamental importance in the cure process for thermo sets. This high enthalpy of cure associated with a rather low thermal conductivity can give rise to an excessively high tem perature which may cause discoloration and degradation of the material, and also to substantial temperature gradients. The mat erial is thus heterogeneous during the process of cure, and these temperature-time histories in the resin may have some effects on the properties of the final material. 3. Moreover, the increase in production following the reduction in time of the cure cycle necessitates the use of a higher mould temperature.

Book excerpt: During the production of fiber-reinforced thermosets, the resin material undergoes a reaction that can lead to damage. A two-stage polymerization reaction is modeled using molecular dynamics and evaluations of the system including a fiber surface are performed. In addition, a phase-field model for crack propagation in heterogeneous systems is derived. This model is able to predict crack growth where established models fail. Finally, the model is used to predict crack formation during curing.

Book excerpt: "Composite materials containing thermosetting resins (thermosets) are frequently used in many industries and are valued for their high specific strength and stiffness. The cure-kinetic relationship of a thermoset material describes how the degree of cure progresses depending on the material's environment. A model of the relationship can be used to predict how the material's state and properties will change throughout a manufacturing process. The best equation to model a cure kinetic relationship depends on the thermoset material, so the goodness of fit of a parametric model will depend on the equation chosen. This is a limitation in the state of the art for modelling cure-kinetic relationships, and there are benefits to establishing a method to develop models that would not depend on which thermoset was being modelled. The objective of this work was to develop a cure kinetic model that did not require an equation to be chosen as a basis, that could be fitted automatically, and that could accurately predict a cure kinetic relationship. A machine learning technique, Gaussian process regression (GPR), was used to develop a cure kinetic model for the thermoset CYCOM® 5276-1. This method was compared to a traditional Arrhenius model for the same material. The machine learning model was able to follow the trend of the cure-kinetic relationship, though it was less accurate than the traditional model for most input values. The GPR model took less effort and time to fit than did the Arrhenius model, though it took longer to evaluate. The accuracy of the machine learning model increased when more data was included in the training data set, and when the Arrhenius equation was included as a prior assumption in the model (as long as the Arrhenius model was more accurate than the GPR model). The accuracy of the predictions is expected to be increased with some proposed alterations to the model. The GPR method developed in this work shows promise as a cure-kinetic modelling method. It has the benefit of making predictions based on experimental data and not on a pre-determined equation; therefore, it is more blind to the chemistry of the material and can be fitted to all thermosets by the same method"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With recent developments in nanotechnology, thermoset nanocomposites offer numerous advantages compared to conventional composite materials. Moreover, with the emergence of commercial nanomaterials like nanoclays (NCs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanosilica (NS), Polyhedral-Oligomeric-Sil-Sesquioxanes (POSS), tungsten-disulfide (WS2) fullerenes and tubes, and Graphene (Gr), new potential routes have been opened to tailor thermosetting polymers in the nanoscale range. Due to the large surface area of the nanosize particles, only small amounts are needed to cause significant changes in the mechanical, physical, and thermal properties of polymer nanocomposites. When the surface areas of the nanoparticles are modified, additional dimensions for the formulation of structural adhesives and composite matrices arise, and can be used for a variety of applications. The formulation sequence and conditions are found to determine the structure and properties of the resulting nanocomposites. This chapter reviews and analyzes the various thermoset nanocomposites containing: NCs, CNTs, NS, POSS, WS2, and Gr.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses are a common phenomenon in composite materials. They can either add to or significantly reduce material strength. Because of the increasing demand for high-strength, light-weight materials such as composites and their wide range of applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, in civil infrastructure and in sporting applications, it is critical that the residual stresses of composite materials are understood and measured correctly. The first part of this important book reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses. Various mathematical (analytical and numerical) methods for calculation of residual stresses in composite materials are also presented. Chapters in the first section of the book discuss the simulated hole drilling method, the slitting/crack compliance method, measuring residual stresses in homogeneous and composite glass materials using photoelastic techniques, and modeling residual stresses in composite materials. The second part of the book discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and a range of other types of composites. Moreover, the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses is discussed. Residual stresses in composite materials provides a comprehensive overview of this important topic, and is an invaluable reference text for both academics and professionals working in the mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace, automotive, marine and sporting industries. Reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses Discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and other types of composite Considers the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses
