Most reliable mathematical tools for analysis of control systems relate to modern control theory. Modern control techniques are model-based since the controller architecture depends on the dynamic representation of the system to be controlled. Therefore, the flight controller design problem is tightly connected with the helicopter modeling. This book provides a step-by-step methodology for designing, evaluating and implementing efficient flight controllers for small-scale helicopters. Design issues that are analytically covered include: • An illustrative presentation of both linear and nonlinear models of ordinary differential equations representing the helicopter dynamics. A detailed presentation of the helicopter equations of motion is given for the derivation of both model types. In addition, an insightful presentation of the main rotor's mechanism, aerodynamics and dynamics is also provided. Both model types are of low complexity, physically meaningful and capable of encapsulating the dynamic behavior of a large class of small-scale helicopters. • An illustrative and rigorous derivation of mathematical control algorithms based on both the linear and nonlinear representation of the helicopter dynamics. During his years with the UK’s Royal Aircraft Establishment and Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, he conducted research into rotorcraft dynamics, handling qualities and flight control. A simple model was developed using first principle physics with application of basic control techniques to understand the couple dynamics. Subsequently, a non-linear slung load model was developed and integrated with the GenHel-PSU simulation of the UH-60A. Linear model frequency responses were verified against AFDD OVERCAST models and flight data. A control architecture based on dynamic inversion was developed, combining fuselage and load state feedback. Slung load states were incorporated in feedback linearization and lagged cable angle feedback was introduced. A controller that uses only lagged cable angle feedback (and no load states in feedback linearization) was also investigated. Sensitivity to load parameter variations and optimization methodologies were considered in aiding the design process. The controller and its variations demonstrated key trade-offs between load swing damping and piloted response. The controller was robust and maintained closed-loop stability for a wide range of load mass and cable length values.

It introduces two prototype designs for the muFly helicopter: a modular one for fast sensor and actuator exchange and easy configuration testing, and a highly integrated design to reduce the total mass and integrate the complete sensor set for autonomous flight. Furthermore, a theoretical foundation for coaxial micro helicopter design is laid. In particular focus are passive stabilization and steering principles of the helicopter. A modular dynamic model is developed, which incorporates the characteristics of a hingeless rotor system, two optional steering principles, and a stabilizer bar module, which is also validated experimentally. Finally, the dynamic model is used for a design parameter study of the most relevant system design parameters. It aims at passive roll and pitch stabilization of the helicopter without a stabilizer bar. By illuminating the aspects of prototype design, dynamic modeling, simulation, and design parameter optimization, this book is a contribution towards palm-sized MAVs.

Two of the propellers spin in clockwise direction and the other two in the counter clockwise direction. For a Quadrotor Helicopter a stabilizing controller is always needed. In this book Artificial Neural Networks based Control Methodology to stabilize the a Quadrotor Helicopoter, has been explained. Firstly a mathematical model of Quadrotor is developed. A simplified approach is adopted using momentum theory, where the gyroscopic effect and air friction on machine s body has been neglected, resulting in a simplified model which is useful in designing a controller to stabilize the machine in hover state. The proposed model is nonlinear since the rotor dynamics are function of square of motor inputs. In the controller designing, Direct Inverse Neural Network Control methodology is employed. For that matter 16,8,4-MLP, 16,16,4-MLP and 16,64,4-MLP are used to control the Quadrotor plant. There performance is compared using simulation results. Direct Inverse Control using 16,64,4-MLP gives the best performance amongst all the other considered.
