Book excerpt: As every day passes, modelling and simulation tools gain importance and become relevance when it comes to the design and development stages. A prime example can be seen in the automotive industry, where such practices have become almost mandatory. Early design stages focus of energy-modelling, where many component dynamics are ignored and the models only compute the energy flow through the models. This allows for quick simulations and changing of component parameters, but as the design process progresses, a need for more detailed models arises. This project will focus on modelling and simulations of subsystems that are unique electric vehicles, such as the battery, motors or inverters. The modelled systems are simplified, but retain fundamental parameters such as operating principles, efficiencies and hardware limitations. Electrical models predict the battery voltage and state of charge. Physical models produce vehicle speed and tire slip estimates and give feedback to the system. Drive cycle inputs give the needed simulation parameters such as speed, incline and steering inputs to the model. The di↵erent model blocks are simulated as a unit using simulink, and results are analysed. Di↵erent parameters such as vehicle speed, energy consumption, battery SOC or wheel slip are logged a analysed and compared with real life examples. Di↵erent energy losses are located and plotted, and their causes explained. A dynamic wheel speed and slip control loop is developed and its performance studied. Finally, a study was carried where model fidelity was systematically and objectively evaluated, and improvements are proposed.

The HMMWV powertrain incorporates a wide variety of components including: automatic transmission, torque converter, worm-gear differentials, transfer case for both differential and lock-up operation, and final-drive speed reducers at the wheel hubs. The objective of the overall project was to develop a methodology for a vehicle with a CVT and a downsized gasoline engine to deliver the maximum vehicle fuel economy within drivability and performance constraints. The first part of this study, as described in [1], focuses on developing a cycle driven model for optimizing the CVT ratio. The study presented in this paper focuses on developing a velocity driven model to simulate the real-time behavior of a vehicle. The results from the optimization schedule presented in backward-looking velocity driven model were utilized to develop a new powertrain optimal operating line (hereafter referred to as P-OOL) which considers powertrain (engine and CVT) efficiency. This P-OOL was created to ensure that the control strategies utilized in the forward- looking model could be used in a real-time vehicle. The proposed P-OOL has been simulated in the model using the Federal Test Procedure (FTP-75) test cycle. Simulation results show that the engine operating points deviate away from the P-OOL. The reasons for deviation of operating points from the P-OOL are vehicle dynamics and powertrain response lag. A control algorithm was simulated which considers powertrain loss and inertia torque due to CVT ratio changes to minimize powertrain response lag. Simulations show a significant improvement in the fuel economy by applying the powertrain response lag compensation algorithm.

Book excerpt: Designing an autonomous vehicle system architecture requires extensive vehicle simulation prior to its implementation on a vehicle. Simulation provides a controlled environment to test the robustness of an autonomous architecture in a variety of driving scenarios. In any autonomous vehicle project, high-fidelity modelling of the vehicle platform is important for accurate simulations. For power-split hybrid electric vehicles, modelling the powertrain for autonomous applications is particularly difficult. The mapping from accelerator and brake pedal positions to torque at the wheels can be a function of many states. Due to this complex powertrain behavior, it is challenging to develop vehicle dynamics control algorithms for autonomous power-split hybrid vehicles. The 2015 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is the selected vehicle platform of Autonomoose, the University of Waterloo's autonomous vehicle project. Autonomoose required high-fidelity models of the vehicle's power-split powertrain and braking systems, and a new longitudinal dynamics vehicle controller. In this thesis, a grey-box approach to modelling the Lincoln MKZ's powertrain and braking systems is proposed. The modelling approach utilizes a combination of shallow neural networks and analytical methods to generate a mapping from accelerator and brake pedal positions to the torque at each wheel. Extensive road testing of the vehicle was performed to identify parameters of the powertrain and braking models. Experimental data was measured using a vehicle measurement system and CAN bus diagnostic signals. Model parameters were identified using optimization algorithms. The powertrain and braking models were combined with a vehicle dynamics model to form a complete high-fidelity model of the vehicle that was validated by open-loop simulation. The high-fidelity models of the powertrain and braking were simplified and combined with a longitudinal vehicle dynamics model to create a control-oriented model of the vehicle. The control-oriented model was used to design an instantaneously linearizing model predictive controller (MPC). The advantages of the MPC over a classical proportional-integral (PI) controller were proven in simulation, and a framework for implementing the MPC on the vehicle was developed. The MPC was implemented on the vehicle for track testing. Early track testing results of the MPC show superior performance to the existing PI that could improve with additional controller parameter tuning.
