Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled ANALYSIS OF UNDERGROUND THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS WITH GROUND WATER ADVECTION IN SUBTROPICAL REGIONS Submitted by Miao Miao He for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in April 2007 Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES) systems allow the direct application of the earth's energy in a form of heat that can be recovered and exploited by humans. As they are both economically competitive and environmentally friendly, UTES systems have gained increasing acceptance. So far, most UTES systems have been applied in cold and temperate regions for both heating and cooling. In this study, two cases of UTES systems applied in subtropical regions and only used for cooling purposes were investigated. The new Duct Storage (DST) model was chosen to represent the Ground Heat Exchanger (GHE), taking into account the ground water advection effects. The transient system simulation program TRNSYS was applied to simulate the performance of the whole system. The first case studied is the Husky project in Shanghai, China, which is a geothermal seasonal cooling energy storage system with energy piles combined with dehumidification. The simulation results show that adequate cooling capacity for comfort air conditioning cannot be guaranteed due to the limitation of the seasonal cooling storage capacity in the ground on account of the mild weather condition and the short cold period during winter. The second case investigated is the Wetland project, which is the first and the only Geothermal Heat Pump (GHP) system built in Hong Kong. Based on the simulation results, it can be concluded that the GHP system has been under-designed. When only cooling is required, the heat imbalance in the ground might ultimately result in system failure. To ensure proper sizing of the GHE, specific in-situ investigation of ground thermal properties and ground water flow is strongly recommended. The simulation results also indicate that a high ground water -5 flow rate (reaching a Darcy velocity of 10 m/s) is required to maintain heat balance in the ground when heat is continually dumped into it without extraction. Hybrid geothermal systems comprising UTES systems and additional heat rejecters, such as cooling towers and pools, could find useful applications in subtropical regions. To further understand the ground water flow behaviour, investigation has been carried out with reference to the specific location of the Wetland project. Both the geometry method and the finite element method have been applied to estimate the ground water flow velocity. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and simulated results has been obtained, which indicates that either method could be applied for estimation of the ground water flow velocity when it is not directly available.
