Book excerpt: "The presented research looks at means of modifying automotive powertrain modeling and simulation (PM&S) software tools to suit the needs of the off-road vehicle industry. The tools currently available to the off-road vehicle industry for PM&S are limited compared to those available to the automotive industry. This research defines, tests and validates (at full scale), an improved modeling and simulation methodology. The proposed methodology predicts the vehicle speed and the power flow between components in an off-road vehicle driven in a complex real life environment. The approach used is to combine automotive PM&S with a geographic information system (GIS) application. This enables variation of parameters defining the vehicle, its environment, and their interactions, throughout the simulation. For an off-road vehicle test case using a snowmobile, the results obtained with this approach are significantly more accurate than those obtained using only baseline automotive PM&S tools. Improvements show a ~75% reduction of error in vehicle speed prediction with a ~90% reduction in standard deviation." --

This book was released on 2019 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the last decade, electric vehicles have seen explosive growth and interest with public adoption and shifting research and development priorities by original equipment manufacturers towards these new powertrains. However, the development of electric vehicles remain costly due to new technologies being implemented in the vehicle with the final cost ultimately being passed down to consumers. This method of developing new products where the price does not justify the product in the eyes of consumers hinders the adoption of the next generation of environmentally friendly vehicles. To verify electric vehicle drivetrain platforms and software models, test beds with specific capability to simulate the entire vehicle are required. Currently, an abundance of valuable engineering resources are dedicated to creating full-scale test beds and full- sized vehicles for testing. Only then, at this stage in the development cycle, are drivetrain tests conducted outside of simulation models. Getting to this first level of functional testing requires using valuable time waiting for components to be designed, manufactured, validated, and installed before the system can be tested. The full-scale vehicle test bed becomes expensive, consumes a lot of space, and cannot be reconfigured easily without changing key components. Therefore, this thesis presents a systematic approach to down-scaling full-size electric vehicles' parameters and environmental conditions to a level that can be handled by a small-scale hardware-in-the-loop simulation test bed. The method for taking the results obtained from the test bed and scaling them back up to the full-size vehicle level are also examined for completion. The hardware-in-the-loop test bed is realized using a twoelectric machine system. The electric machine responsible for the electric vehicle propulsion is the traction motor and is tasked with maintaining the vehicle speed. The other electric machine, directly coupled to the first machine, is controlled by the simulation environment. This machine is the load motor which emulates the vehicle operating environment including the forces acting on the vehicle. This motor also compensates for all losses experienced by the actual hardware setup. A detailed explanation of the entire hardware-in-the-loop setup is discussed with specific details relevant to the system design. The modularity of the system, allowing each block of the setup to be easily replaced, and making the test bed highly re-configurable, is also discussed in detail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last century, the automotive industry has been dominated by internal combustion engines. Their flexibility of application, driving range, performance and sporty characteristics has resulted in several generations of this technology and has formed generations of engineers. But that is not the end of the story. Stricter legislation and increased environmental awareness have resulted in the development of new powertrain technologies in addition and parallel to the highly optimized internal combustion engine. Hybrid powertrains systems, pure battery electric systems and fuel cell systems, in conjunction with a diverse range of applications, have increased the spectrum of powertrain technologies. Furthermore, automated driving together with intelligent and highly connected systems are changing the way to get from A to B. Not only is the interaction of all these new technologies challenging, but also several different disciplines have to collaborate intensively in order for new powertrain systems to be successfully developed. These new technologies and the resulting challenges lead to an increase in system complexity. Approaches such as systems engineering are necessary to manage this complexity. To show how systems engineering manages the increasing complexity of modern powertrain systems, by providing processes, methods, organizational aspects and tools, this book has been structured into five parts. Starting with Challenges for Powertrain Development, which describes automotive-related challenges at different levels of the system hierarchy and from different point of views. The book then continues with the core part, Systems Engineering, in which all the basics of systems engineering, model-based systems engineering, and their related processes, methods, tools, and organizational matters are described. A special focus is placed on important standards and the human factor. The third part, Automotive Powertrain Systems Engineering Approach, puts the fundamentals of systems engineering into practice by adding the automotive context. This part focuses on system development and also considers the interactions to hardware and software development. Several approaches and methods are presented based on systems engineering philosophy. Part four, Powertrain Development Case Studies, adds the practical point of view by providing a range of case studies on powertrain system level and on powertrain element level and discusses the development of hybrid powertrain, internal combustion engines, e-drives, transmissions, batteries and fuel cell systems. Two case studies on a vehicle level are also presented. The final part, Outlook, considers the development of systems engineering itself with particular focus on information communication technologies. Even though this book covers systems engineering from an automotive perspective, many of the challenges, fundamental principles, conclusions and outlooks can be applied to other domains too. Therefore, this book is not only relevant for automotive engineers and students, but also for specialists in scientific and industrial positions in other domains and anyone who has to cope with the challenge of successfully developing complex systems with a large number of collaborating disciplines.

Book excerpt: The authors examine in detail the fundamentals and mathematical descriptions of the dynamics of automobiles. In this context different levels of complexity will be presented, starting with basic single-track models up to complex three-dimensional multi-body models. A particular focus is on the process of establishing mathematical models on the basis of real cars and the validation of simulation results. The methods presented are explained in detail by means of selected application scenarios.
