Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion thruster plume interaction has been studied extensively in recent years. While most existing plume models have focused on charge-exchange ion interactions with the spacecraft and/or plume-induced contamination, few studies have examined the detailed physics near the thruster exit. In particular, the ion beam neutralization process and the characteristics of the neutralizing electrons are not well understood. This paper presents a full-PIC model for the near-thruster plume of a single thruster. A multi-domain model, which splits the domain into a near-cathode region and a near-plume region, is used to obtain velocity distribution of the neutralizing electrons. This simulation is compared with one that assumes a pre-neutralized beam and another that uses a floating cathode potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph solely investigates the Debye Screening Length (DSL) in semiconductors and their nano-structures. The materials considered are quantized structures of non-linear optical, III-V, II-VI, Ge, Te, Platinum Antimonide, stressed materials, Bismuth, GaP, Gallium Antimonide, II-V and Bismuth Telluride respectively. The DSL in opto-electronic materials and their quantum confined counterparts is studied in the presence of strong light waves and intense electric fields on the basis of newly formulated electron dispersion laws that control the studies of such quantum effect devices. The suggestions for the experimental determination of 2D and 3D DSL and the importance of measurement of band gap in optoelectronic materials under intense built-in electric field in nano devices and strong external photo excitation (for measuring photon induced physical properties) have also been discussed in this context. The influence of crossed electric and quantizing magnetic fields on the DSL and the DSL in heavily doped semiconductors and their nanostructures has been investigated. This monograph contains 150 open research problems which form the integral part of the text and are useful for both PhD students and researchers in the fields of solid-state sciences, materials science, nano-science and technology and allied fields in addition to the graduate courses in modern semiconductor nanostructures.

Book excerpt: The book describes the results of investigations of the electrophysical, chemical, gas-dynamic and other processes in low-temperature plasma, their diagnostics, modelling and application in various areas of science and technology. Special attention is given to the problems associated with physico-chemical processes and chemical reactions in nonequilibrium and (quasi) equilibrium low-temperature plasma. Kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of plasmochemical reactions and their mechanisms, determined mainly by reactions under electron impacts and reactions of vibrationally excited molecules, are discussed.

Book excerpt: Systems Factorial Technology: A Theory Driven Methodology for the Identification of Perceptual and Cognitive Mechanisms explores the theoretical and methodological tools used to investigate fundamental questions central to basic psychological and perceptual processes. Such processes include detection, identification, classification, recognition, and decision-making. This book collects the tools that allow researchers to deal with the pervasive model mimicry problems which exist in standard experimental and theoretical paradigms and includes novel applications to not only basic psychological questions, but also clinical diagnosis and links to neuroscience. Researchers can use this book to begin using the methodology behind SFT and to get an overview of current uses and future directions. The collected developments and applications of SFT allow us to peer inside the human mind and provide strong constraints on psychological theory. - Provides a thorough introduction to the diagnostic tools offered by SFT - Includes a tutorial on applying the method to reaction time data from a variety of different situations - Introduces novel advances for testing the significance of SFT results - Incorporates new measures that allow for the relaxation of the high accuracy criterion - Examines tools to expand the scope of SFT analyses - Applies SFT to a spectrum of different cognitive domains across different sensory modalities

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that ion beams readily neutralize given a source of electrons is well known, but the physics behind that process is not. As electric propulsion devices move into the micro and macro regions with colloids, FEEPs, and large arrays of thrusters, the interactions between the neutralizer and the thruster are under examination. Simulations using 2D and 3D Particle-in-Cell (PIC) codes are presented, detailing starting and steady state interactions between an ion beam and an electron beam. It is shown that the starting conditions require detailed current coupling to propagate normally. Steady state simulations show robust behavior regardless of ion or electron currents. Further investigation of steady state reveals no mechanism for imparting ion beam bulk velocity to electrons.

Book excerpt: The Naval Research Laboratory's mission is to conduct a broadly based multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced technological development directed toward maritime applications of new and improved materials, techniques, equipment, systems, and ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences and related technologies. The Naval Research Laboratory provides primary in-house research for the physical, engineering, space, and environmental sciences; broadly based applied research and advanced technology development programs in response to identified and anticipated Navy and Marine Corps needs; broad multidisciplinary support to the Naval Warfare Centers; space and space systems technology, development, and support; and assumes responsibility as the Navy's corporate laboratory. The Naval Research Laboratory is the Department of the Navy's corporate laboratory; it is under the command of the Chief of Naval Research. As the corporate laboratory of the Navy, NRL is the principal in-house component in the Office of Naval Research's (ONR) effort to meet its science and technology responsibilities. NRL has had a long and fruitful relationship with industry as a collaborator, contractor, and most recently in Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs). NRL values this linkage and continues to develop it. NRL is an important link in the Navy Research, Development, and Acquisition (RD&A) chain. Through NRL, the Navy has direct ties with sources of fundamental ideas in industry and the academic community throughout the world and provides an effective coupling point to the R&D chain for ONR.

Book excerpt: In response to the CNO's tasking to examine Sea Supremacy within the context of SEA POWER 21, SSG XXII proposed the concept of FORCEnet Engagement Packs (FnEPs). The FnEPs concept represents the operational construct for FORCEnet and demonstrates the power of FORCEnet by integrating a specific set of joint sensors, platforms, weapons, warriors, networks and command and control systems, for the purpose of performing mission-specific engagements. Initial pack asset allocation and constitution will be based on a specific threat or mission; however, the capability to dynamically re-configure and re-allocate assets "on the fly," to reconstitute a new pack will enable cross-mission engagement capabilities. Integrating the six FORCEnet factors must focus on five critical functions we term "Combat Reach Capabilities (CRCs)". These include: Integrated Fire Control (IFC), Automated Battle Management Aids (ABMAs), Composite Tracking (CT), Composite Combat Identification (CCID), and Common/ Single Integrated Pictures (CP). FnEPs achieves tully integrated joint capabilities focused on the engagement chain, and represents a revolutionary transformation in Naval operations complimentary to FORCEnet, SEA POWER 21, and Sea Supremacy. This thesis has two goals. First, we will conduct analysis to better understand the FnEPs Concept including the myriad of technical, organizational I, and programmatic requirements for its implementation. Second, we will propose a roadmap for the continued development and institutionalization' of the FnEPs Concept.
