The equivalent effective elastic and dynamic properties of the continuum model in terms of the material and geometric properties of the truss are derived in a simple and straightforward manner. The accuracy of the model is demonstrated in a free vibration problem, when the results are compared to those obtained from the conventional finite element method. Both simply supported and free-free boundary conditions are considered. In addition, the assumptions made in obtaining the continuum solution are discussed. Numerical results clearly indicate the potential of this approach for modeling large repetitive truss-type structures. (Author).

Their overall appearance may be that of a beam or a plate, complexity rather than that of their expected behavior. Therefore several investigators have developed equivalent continuum models to simplify linear and nonlinear analyses. These simple models accurately represent the behavior of the original structure for long wavelengths. LSS are subjected to stringent requirements for position, shape and vibration control so that an active control system needs to be implemented. Passive damping in LSS insures the stability of the active control system, allows for higher gains, reduces the bandwidth and therefore the number of sensors and actuators to be used. Sources of damping can be many, among which joint friction and internal damping seem of interest. In this study internal damping will be considered. The formulation of mathematical models including damping effects for discrete and continuous structures are discussed, the damping properties of the equivalent continuum models are determined and results are presented for several examples. Book excerpt: Continuum models of large repetitive lattice structures are often used to provide computationally efficient analyses of static, dynamic and thermomechanical properties. In this report, a continuum model is used to study wave propagation in lattice structures. Attention is focused on a tetrahedral lattice structure which may be modeled as an equivalent homogeneous transversely isotropic continuum. Numerical results for phase velocities, deviation angles, and wave front surfaces in the equivalent continuum show that wave propagation in lattice structures may be remarkably different from the more familiar wave propagation in isotropic continua. The results given here, which ignore all effects of boundaries of the lattice and which are valid for wavelengths that are long compared with the basic cell size of the lattice, are intended to give insight into how waves may propagate in large repetitive lattice structures.
