It is thus only natural that social scientists have started to study human choice behavior. Early efforts focused on modeling aggregate choice patterns of home buyers, shoppers, travelers, and others. Later studies, aiming to achieve more realistic results, have concentrated on simula ting disaggregate behavior. The most recent approach in choice research is the so-called Discrete Choice Modeling. It is a front-line area mainly in contemporary transportation, geography, and behavioral research. It focuses on individuals' decision-making processes regarding the choice of destinations, modes, departure times, and routes. Considerable research has been done on identifying and quantify ing the general rules governing the individuals' choice behavior, but to the best of our knowledge there is no single book that solely deals with route choice. The study of travelers' route choice in networks is primarily oriented towards gaining insight into their spatial choice behavior. How do people choose routes in a network, what do they know, what do they look for, which road characteristics playa role? On the basis of this information it is possible to design quantitative models aimed at predicting the use of routes dependent on the characteristics of the routes, those of the surrounding environment, and those of the travelers. In this way, traffic flows in the network can be calculated and the network performance can be evaluated.

Book excerpt: This research investigates the route choice behavior of cyclists in the City of Toronto using data collected from a smartphone application deployed to a large number of cyclists in the City. A total 4,556 cyclists registered for this study and logged over 30,000 commuting trips and 9,600 recreational trips over a study period of 9 months. The routes of individual cycling trips were estimated by a map-matching algorithm using second-by-second GPS readings of each trip and Toronto's cycling road network. Personal information such as age, gender and residence, work or school place was collected from the participants on a voluntary basis. The collected cycling trip data were used to estimate path-size logit route choice models - variant of multinomial logit model for both commuting and recreational trips with various modeling options and combinations of candidate factors. The estimations of the models were evaluated using various performance measures and statistical tests, resulting in findings and conclusions on the optimal modeling structure, the factors that had statistical significant effects on cyclists' routing decisions and the magnitude of these effects. The modeling results revealed the critical importance of cycling facilities such as bicycle lanes, multiuse pathways and trails on cyclists' route choice decisions. It was shown that directness as measured by travel distance is the most important factor considered by commuting cyclists in making their route choices. It was also found that cyclists prefer cycling along major streets than local streets and do not mind traveling along transit routes. Furthermore, they tend to choose routes with more bicycle facilities especially dedicated off-street facilities. Comparing to recreational trips, the routes chosen for commuting were in general closer to the routes of minimum distance and energy consumption. In contrast, for recreational trips, cyclists were less concerned about the directness or the degree of challenges of the routes. For these trips, cyclists appeared to place safety at a higher priority instead of time as they showed a higher preference to dedicated bike facilities such as bike lanes and off-street bike paths than on-street mixed facility. Weather and personal attributes were not found to be statistical significant in affecting cyclists' route choices. These along with other findings from this thesis research have provided valuable information for Toronto's ongoing effort on bicycle network planning. The results could also be used to enhance route-finding tools available to cyclists for improved cycling experience.

Book excerpt: For a number of reasons--congestion, public health, greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, demographic shifts, and community livability to name a few--the importance of walking and bicycling as transportation options will only continue to increase. Currently, policy interest and infrastructure funding for nonmotorized modes far outstrip our ability to model bike and walk travel. To ensure scarce resources are used most effectively, accurate models sensitive to key policy variables are needed to support long-range planning and project evaluation, and to continue adding to our growing understanding of key factors driving walk and bike behavior. This research attempts to synthesize and advance the state of the art in trip-based, nonmotorized mode choice modeling. Over the past fifteen years, efforts to model the decision to walk or bike on a given trip have been hampered by the lack of a comprehensive behavioral framework and inconsistency in measurement scales and model specification. This project develops a mode choice behavioral framework that acknowledges the importance of attributes along the specific walk and bike routes that travelers are likely to consider, in addition to more traditional area-based measures of travel environments. The proposed framework is applied to a revealed preference, GPS-based travel dataset collected from 2010-2013 in Portland, Oregon. Measurement of nonmotorized trip distance, built environment, tour-level variables, and attitudinal attributes as well as mode availability are explicitly addressed. Route and mode choice models are specified using discrete choice techniques, and predicted walking and bicycling routes are tested as inputs to various mode choice models. Results suggest strong potential for predicted route measures to enhance walk and bicycle mode choice modeling. Findings also support the specific notion that bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure contribute not only to route choice but also to the choice of whether to bike or walk. For decisions to bicycle, availability of low-traffic routes may be particularly important to women. Model results further indicate that land use and built environments around trip ends and a person’s home still have important effects on nonmotorized travel when controlling for route quality. Both route and area travel environment impacts are mostly robust to the inclusion of residential self-selection variables, consistent with the idea that built environment differences matter even for households that choose to live in a walkable or bikeable neighborhood. The combination of area and route-based built environment measures alongside trip context, sociodemographic, and attitudinal attributes provides a new perspective on nonmotorized travel behavior relevant to both policy and practice.

However, this change in modal share is not reflected in current transportation planning and travel demand forecasting modeling processes. The existing practices to model bicycle trips in a network are not sophisticated enough to describe the full cyclist experience in route decision-making. The purpose of this paper is to develop a multi-class and multi-criteria bicycle traffic assignment model that not only accounts for multiple user classes by acknowledging that there are different types of cyclists with varying levels of biking experience, but also for relevant factors that may affect each user classes’ behavior in route choice decisions. The multi-class, multi-criteria bicycle traffic assignment model is developed in a two-stage process. The first stage examines key criteria to generate a set of non-dominated paths for each user class, and the second stage determines the flow allocation to each user’s set of efficient paths. Numerical experiments are then conducted to demonstrate the two-stage approach for the multi-class, multi-criteria bicycle traffic assignment model.
