Book excerpt: A new interest in the field of dynamic response analysis is expanding as the number of accidents involving the all-terrain vehicles (ATV) are increasing in daily life. All-terrain vehicles are four wheeled motorbikes made for off-road utilities and recreation. The vehicle safety is an important feature to the public and automotive industry. Accident statistics show that deaths have been increasing year after year for this category of ATV accidents. This is due to several factors including, unsupervised and careless driving habits of the human beings and tendency of these vehicles to undergo unsafe dynamics. Rollover and Frontal flips are two of the table toppers in this category of injuries. The aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the dynamic response of an all-terrain vehicle and its driver in typical crashes. First the dynamics of the vehicle on an uneven road is examined. Next, among all the crash causes, two types of crash simulations; i.e., side rollover and frontal flip are considered. These simulations are carried out using the multibody dynamics simulation tool MSC-ADAMS and the occupant safety design analyzing tool MADYMO. The primary tasks of this thesis are (i) creating an ATV computer model, (ii) creating three different tracks for uneven road performance, roll over and frontal flip simulations (iii) including a hybrid III 50th percentile dummy to analyze the potential injuries and fatalities in these events. The results are analyzed and compared with the awareness of various specifications. Overall the study indicates that the ATV accidents could pose significant potential for injury and fatality to the driver.

The Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV's) are the most common vehicles involved in rollover crashes compared to other vehicles. Different types of static and dynamic test methods have been proposed and implemented to evaluate the performance of a vehicle in rollover crashes. However due to complexity of rollover crashes, no specific dynamic method is required at present to evaluate the rollover crash and occupant protection responses, as a several factors could affect the rollover impact outcome. In this study, the finite element modeling and simulation of a typical SUV is first conducted for static roof crush test per regulatory Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 216. Once model evaluation and validation is completed, the finite element modeling and simulation of a simplified Jordan Rollover System (JRS) is conducted and the results are compared with these corresponding to an unconstrained rollover tests, both performed on the same SUV. A parametric study is conducted for pertinent dynamic rollover parameters such as drop height of the vehicle, and the platform floor speed. The results from the simulation test measurements including intrusion of roof components, reaction/contact force on the platform, roll angle, and roll rate of the vehicle, and the internal energy generated of the rollover are all examined and compared. Results from the simulations are analyzed to examine the significance of using either JRS or unconstrained rollover models. Recommendations are made based on initial rollover conditions for better dynamic approach and suggestion for test protocols or standards.

Book excerpt: According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), side-impact car accidents are the second leading cause of fatalities in the United States. Compared to all other accidents, side-impact crashes are quite dangerous to the occupants because of their limited ability to absorb the crash energy and less space for intrusion. NHTSA and IIHS have developed safety standards to prevent fatalities by conducting several experiments using anthropomorphic test dummies (ATDs). Although the regulations are based on the use of crash dummies, there might be differences between actual human crash performance and dummy crash performance. In recent years, technology has improved in such a way that crash scenarios can be modeled in various computational software, and human dynamic responses can be studied using active human body models, which are a combination of rigid bodies, finite elements, and kinematic joints, thus making them flexible to use in all crash test scenarios. In this research, nearside occupants were considered because they are more likely to be injured in a side-impact crash. Vehicle side-impact crash simulations were carried out using LS-DYNA finite element (FE) software, and the occupant response simulations were conducted with Mathematical Dynamic Models (MADYMO) software. Because the simulation of an entire FE model of a car and occupant is quite time consuming and expensive, a prescribed structural motion (PSM) technique was utilized and applied to the side-door panel with an occupant positioned in the driver seat of the car using the MADYMO code. Regular side-impact deformable barrier and pole test simulations were performed with belted and unbelted occupant models considering two different target vehicles—a mid-size sedan and a small compact car. Responses from dummy and human body models were compared in order to quantify the noticeable differences between the two performances in nearside-impact accidents.

The suspension system design has derived from classical double wishbone control arm. Greater wheel motion has been ensured without reducing driving performance. In order to improve the driving comfort and safety an optimal active damping force has been determined by the active and semi-active systems. On the basis of comprehensive analysis, active system adequacy has been achieved. The suspension design provides relatively small lateral wheel motion, zero camber angles, and it effectively absorbs the vibrations caused by road configurations. The steering system design provides higher maneuverability at low speed and suitable stability at higher speed. This has been ensured by two modes of steering, all wheels steer and front wheel steer. The steering mechanisms conform to Ackermann law for all modes and situations. A totally new steering concept has been developed. This effective design consists of special pairs of gears, known as' non-circular gears'.

The model represents the human body by a series of connected bodies simulating the limbs, torso, head and neck of the human frame. The computer algorithms are developed using DYNACOMBSC̈ a three-dimensional multibody dynamics computer simulation model. DYNACOMBS provides a dynamic analysis of arbitrary collections of bodies allowing for both translation and rotation between adjacent bodies. The relative orientation of adjacent bodies is defined by Euler parameters to avoid computational problems of singularities, which occur with other orientation angles (such as Bryan angles or Euler angles). Thus there are distinct computational advantages of the presented model over other crash-victim simulators. The governing dynamical equations for the model are based upon Kaneis̄ equations and their associated kinematical quantities (partial velocities, partial angular velocities, generalized speeds, and lower body arrays). Formulations based upon Kaneis̄ equations are believed to be the most efficient and most reliable of the various methods available for studying large multibody systems. Consequently they are ideally suited for studying the dynamics of crash victims. The developed vehicle and victim model allows for arbitrary vehicle motion. Specifically, given the vehicle rollover motion, as would occur in an accident environment, the simulation predicts the vehicle occupant movement and the forces exerted on the occupant by the seat and seat belts. The model is validated by a series of recently recorded sets of experimental data from dummies and cadavers in a variety of vehicle crash conditions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to develop a CarSim model of an ATV that could predict the cornering characteristic of the vehicle in certain steady-state maneuvers. The objectives of the research include measuring necessary parameters of the vehicle, building the model in CarSim using the measurements, and evaluate the model with field test results of ATVs. A subject ATV is tested on the Vehicle Inertia Measurement Facility (VIMF) and the Suspension Parameter Measurement Device (SPMD) for the mass, inertia, suspension kinematics and compliance of the vehicle. The test procedures, test results and the measured parameters are presented and analyzed. The model of the ATV is built in the CarSim based on the measurements of the vehicle. A simplified suspension model is developed to convert the SPMD compliance measurements into implementable vehicle parameters in CarSim. The procedure to apply vehicle mass, inertia and suspension kinematics data in the CarSim is also shown. The model is evaluated with the 50-feet radius circle test. The simulation results of the maneuver are compared with the field test results shown in a recent CPSC report on ATVs. Similar cornering characteristics are found in both results. This thesis is concluded by discussing the benefits of the ATV model in reducing the time and expense on ATV field tests. Future research that could improve the credibility and accuracy of this model is also discussed.

There are various factors and parameters that affect the rollover crashes such as vehicle speed, height of its fall, angle of contact with the ground, side of contact, reason for the rollover, etc. The countermeasure for these parameters are also difficult to be included in a standard test procedure. The present study is focused on development and utilization of a computational finite element model of typical SUV vehicle in static and unconstrained dynamic rollover tests. The vehicle is subjected to various dynamic rollover parameters, including the height of its fall, longitudinal speed of the vehicle during the rollover and angle of contact with the ground. In the end, various parametric studies are examined on a Toyota RAV4 rollover crash, the energy inducing and the force imparting to the vehicle are analyzed, and their effects shall be identified for a recommended set of initial roll parameters.
