Book excerpt: Several Radar Target Identification (RTI) techniques have been developed at The Ohio State University in recent years. Using the ElectroScience Laboratory compact range a large database of coherent RCS measurement has been constructed for several types of targets (aircraft, ships, and ground vehicles) at a variety of polarizations, aspect angles, and frequency bands. This extensive database has been used to analyze the performance of several different classification algorithms through the use of computer simulations. In order to optimize classification performance, Ksienski concluded the radar frequency range should lie in the Rayleigh-resonance frequency range, where the wavelength is on the order of or larger than the target size. For aircraft and ships with general dimensions on the order of 10 meters to 100 meters it is apparent that the High Frequency (HF) band provides optimal classification performance. Since existing HF radars are currently being used for detection and tracking or aircraft and ships of these dimensions, it is natural to further investigate the possibility of using these existing radars as the measurement devices in a radar target classification system. Book excerpt: The basic concept of the structure and properties of the ionosphere are discussed to explain how the performance of the over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) system is affected. An overview of the OTHR system characteristics and performance are presented along with some applications currently used around the world, including their geographic location and historical background. The waveforms used for the OTHR systems include simple pulse, pulse Doppler, phased-coded pulse, frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW), and frequency modulated interrupt continuous wave (FMICW). Other characteristics such as target detection methods and the skywave OTHR range equation are also discussed. Simulation results indicate that the minimum required input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for a target with 100 m2 cross section at 3,500 km footprint range is 52.4 - dB at c f = 14.5 MHz. In addition, a noncooperative intercept receiver requires a minimum input SNR of 94 dB for a square law detector and 97 dB for a linear detector for interception at a footprint range of 3,500 km at c f = 14.5 MHz. A model of the maximum detection range for the Chinese FMCW OTH backscatter (OTH-B) radar was developed in MATLAB. An intercept receiver maximum interception range is also analyzed. A ray tracing technique is also used in PROPLAB to present a more detailed analysis. The analysis includes the electron density profile, the maximum usable frequency, the critical frequency of the layers, the skip zone, and the signal quality. The simulations focused on the Chinese OTH-B radar system are to investigate the Chinese surveillance capabilities.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Radar Target Detection: Handbook of Theory and Practice covers a set of graphical solutions to the detection problem, designated as Meyer Plots, for radar systems design. A radar system's major purpose is the detection and location of an object by means of a return signal, which could be either a reflection or a beacon. This book is composed of four chapters. Chapter 1 presents the basic radar range equation, which is the basic relationship which permits the calculation of echo signal strength from measurable or known parameters of the radar transmitter, antenna, propagation path, and target. Chapter 2 provides examples for determining statistical signal detection using Meyer Plots, particularly for determining detection probability and integration loss and efficiency. Chapter 3 describes the application of target models to determination of detection probability. Chapter 4 examines how Meyer Plots can be used to solve problems involving most any target model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of studies leading to the development of ship target identification from the return from High Frequency Over the Horizon (HF OTH) radar returns were implemented. All of the studies used data from an available data base where measurements were made of scale models on a ground plane. The frequencies used were consistent with the HF band (2-25 MHz in this case). The work reported on here is the initial phase of the research, and the data base was not directly usable for the testing of specific algorithms for the identification of surface ships in general. The data base was used instead to test the general identifiability of surface ships using HF OTH radar returns. Nearest neighbor techniques and hyperline techniques were used to measure the clustering and the separation of the amplitude and phase data from the ship models in hyperspace (i.e., parameter space). Ramp response curves and pole extraction techniques were used to indicate the source of the reliability of the features found in the target return data. It was shown that the OTH returns can be expected to be inherently useful for the identification of ships. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radar-based imaging of aircraft targets is a topic that continues to attract a lot of attention, particularly since these imaging methods have been recognized to be the foundation of any successful all-weather non-cooperative target identification technique. Traditional books in this area look at the topic from a radar engineering point of view. Consequently, the basic issues associated with model error and image interpretation are usually not addressed in any substantive fashion. Moreover, applied mathematicians frequently find it difficult to read the radar engineering literature because it is jargon-laden and device specific, meaning that the skills most applicable to the problem's solution are rarely applied. Enabling an understanding of the subject and its current mathematical research issues, Radar Imaging of Airborne Targets: A Primer for Applied Mathematicians and Physicists presents the issues and techniques associated with radar imaging from a mathematical point of view rather than from an instrumentation perspective. The book concentrates on scattering issues, the inverse scattering problem, and the approximations that are usually made by practical algorithm developers. The author also explains the consequences of these approximations to the resultant radar image and its interpretation, and examines methods for reducing model-based error.

Book excerpt: Adaptive detection of signals embedded in correlated Gaussian noise has been an active field of research in the last decades. This topic is important in many areas of signal processing such as, just to give some examples, radar, sonar, communications, and hyperspectral imaging. Most of the existing adaptive algorithms have been designed following the lead of the derivation of Kelly's detector which assumes perfect knowledge of the target steering vector. However, in realistic scenarios, mismatches are likely to occur due to both environmental and instrumental factors. When a mismatched signal is present in the data under test, conventional algorithms may suffer severe performance degradation. The presence of strong interferers in the cell under test makes the detection task even more challenging. An effective way to cope with this scenario relies on the use of "tunable" detectors, i.e., detectors capable of changing their directivity through the tuning of proper parameters. The aim of this book is to present some recent advances in the design of tunable detectors and the focus is on the so-called two-stage detectors, i.e., adaptive algorithms obtained cascading two detectors with opposite behaviors. We derive exact closed-form expressions for the resulting probability of false alarm and the probability of detection for both matched and mismatched signals embedded in homogeneous Gaussian noise. It turns out that such solutions guarantee a wide operational range in terms of tunability while retaining, at the same time, an overall performance in presence of matched signals commensurate with Kelly's detector.
