Book excerpt: This dissertation is concerned with the multiaxial fatigue behavior of rubber related to pneumatic tires. The results provide the methodologies to predict the fatigue life in the states of complex stresses and for arbitrary geometries by utilizing experimental data from simple stress states on simple geometries. Most practical applications are under multiaxial and nonrelaxing conditions, but most of the data on fatigue life of rubber obtained from laboratories are for uniaxial and relaxing conditions. When the data are not available for actual loading conditions, the fatigue life can be evaluated from experimental data for uniaxial fatigue loading by an empirical relationship. The methodologies of predicting the crack initiation life were developed for filled SBR by the use of strain-fatigue life curves. They combine a modified Goodman relationship and the various fatigue failure theories, and were developed for linear and nonlinear models of the stress-strain relationship. The multiaxial fatigue failure approach using the total strain energy was found to give the most practical agreement with experimental data. The statistical behavior of fatigue life was investigated experimentally, and lognormal and Weibull distribution approximations were found to be acceptable from an engineering viewpoint. The lognormal distribution was, however, recommended to save experimental time. The test can be terminated after only half the number of specimens fail when a number of specimens are tested simultaneously. The statistical strain-fatigue life curves were approximated by a family of straight lines in log-log coordinates. Therefore, the data for fatigue life distribution can be extrapolated to lower strain levels and the cumulative density function can be formulated in simple forms. Also, a method of predicting the reliability of rubber components at an expected fatigue life was presented. Besides the mechanical factor affecting the fatigue failure of rubber, two other factors, temperature and environmental aging, were considered to adjust the fatigue life predicted for mechanical deformations to real operating conditions. A method of predicting fatigue life for arbitrary periodic loading was proposed, which deals with the experimental data generated by harmonic and constant amplitude loading on uniaxial strips.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarizes recent international research and experimental developments regarding fatigue crack growth investigations of rubber materials. It shows the progress in fundamental as well as advanced research of fracture investigation of rubber material under fatigue loading conditions, especially from the experimental point of view. However, some chapters will describe the progress in numerical modeling and physical description of fracture mechanics and cavitation phenomena in rubbers. Initiation and propagation of cracks in rubber materials are dominant phenomena which determine the lifetime of these soft rubber materials and, as a consequence, the lifetime of the corresponding final rubber parts in various fields of application. Recently, these phenomena became of great scientific interest due to the development of new experimental methods, concepts and models. Furthermore, crack phenomena have an extraordinary impact on rubber wear and abrasion of automotive tires; and understanding of crack initiation and growth in rubbers will help to support the growthing number of activities and worldwide efforts of reduction of tire wear losses and abrasion based emissions.

Book excerpt: The cost benefits associated with the use of heavy mining machinery in the surface mining industry has led to a surge in the production of ultra-large radial tires with rim diameters in excess of 35 in. These tires experience fatigue failures in operation. The use of reinforcing fillers and processing aids in tire compounds results in the formation of microstructural inhomogeneity in the compounds and may serve as sources of crack initiation in the tire. Abrasive material cutting is another source of cracks in tires used in mining applications. It suffices, then, to assume that every material plane in the tire consists of a crack precursor of some known size likely to nucleate under the tire's duty cycle loads. This assumption eliminates the need for prior knowledge of the location and geometry of crack features to be explicitly included in a tire finite element model, overcoming the key limitations of previous approaches. In this study, a rainflow counting algorithm is used to consistently count strain reversals present in the complex multiaxial variable amplitude duty-cycle loads of the tire to assess fatigue damage on its material planes. A critical plane analysis method is then used to account for the non-proportional loading on the tire material planes in order to identify the plane with the highest fatigue damage. The size of the investigated tire is 56/80R63, and it is typically fitted to ultra-class trucks with payload capacities in excess of 325 tonne (360 short ton). Experimental data obtained from extracted specimens of the tire were used to characterize the stress-strain and fatigue behavior of the tire finite element model in ABAQUS. A sequentially coupled thermomechanical rolling analysis of the tire provided stress, strains, and temperature data for the computation of the tire's component fatigue performance in the rubber fatigue solver ENDURICA CL. The belt endings (tire shoulder), lower sidewall, and tread lug corners are susceptible to crack initiation and subsequent failure due to high stresses. This pioneering research effort contributes to the body of knowledge in tire durability issues in relation to mining applications. In addition, it provides a basis for off-road tire compounders and developers to design durable tires to minimize tire operating costs in the mining industry"--Abstract, page iii.

Book excerpt: In order to develop innovative products, to reduce development costs and the number of prototypes and to accelerate development processes, numerical simulations become more and more attractive. As such, numerical simulations are instrumental in understanding complicated material properties like chemical ageing, crack propagation or the strain- and temperature-induced crystallisation of rubber. Therefore, experimentally validated and physically meaningful constitutive models are indispensable. Elastomers are used for products like tyres, engine and suspension mounts or seals, to name a few. The interest in modelling the quasi-static stress-strain behaviour was dominant in the past decades, but nowadays the interests also include influences of environmental conditions. The latest developments on the material behaviour of elastomers are collected in the present volume. Constitutive Models for Rubber X is a comprehensive compilation of nearly all oral and poster contributions to the European Conference on Constitutive Models for Rubber (Munich, 28-31 August 2017). The 95 highly topical contributions reflect the state of-the-art in material modelling and testing of elastomers. They cover the fields of material testing and processing, filler reinforcement, electromagnetic sensitive elastomers, dynamic properties, constitutive modelling, micromechanics, finite element implementation, stress softening, chemical ageing, fatigue and durability. In the area of rubbery materials and structures, applied research will play an important role also in the coming decades. Constitutive Models for Rubber X is of interest to developers and researchers involved in the rubber processing and CAE software industries, as well as for academics in nearly all disciplines of engineering and material sciences.

Book excerpt: This study investigates constitutive behavior, material properties and fatigue damage under constant and variable amplitude uniaxial and multiaxial loading conditions, with the goal of developing CAE analytical techniques for durability and life prediction of elastomeric components. Such techniques involve various topics including material monotonic and cyclic deformation behaviors, proper knowledge of stress/strain histories, fatigue damage quantification parameters, efficient event identification methods, and damage accumulation rules. Elastomeric components are widely used in many applications, including automobiles due to their good damping and energy absorption characteristics. The type of loading normally encountered by these components in service is variable amplitude cyclic loading. Therefore, fatigue failure is a major consideration in their design and availability of an effective technique to predict fatigue life under complex loading is very valuable to the design procedure. In this work a fatigue life prediction methodology for rubber components is developed which is then verified by means of analysis and testing of an automobile cradle mount made of filled natural rubber. The methodology was validated with component testing under different loading conditions including constant and variable amplitude in-phase and out-of-phase axial-torsion experiments. The analysis conducted includes constitutive behavior representation of the material, finite element analysis of the component, and a fatigue damage parameter for life predictions. In addition, capabilities of Rainflow cycle counting procedure and Miner's linear cumulative damage rule are evaluated. Fatigue characterization typically includes both crack nucleation and crack growth. Therefore, relevant material deformation and fatigue properties are obtained from experiments conducted under stress states of simple tension and planar tension. For component life predictions, both fatigue crack initiation approach as well as fatigue crack growth approach based on fracture mechanics are presented. Crack initiation life prediction was performed using different damage criteria. The optimum method for crack initiation life prediction for complex multiaxial variable amplitude loading was found to be a critical plane approach based on maximum normal strain plane and damage quantification by cracking energy density on that plane. The fracture mechanics approach was used for total fatigue life prediction of the component based on specimen crack growth data and FE simulation results. Total fatigue life prediction results showed good agreement with experiments for all of the loading conditions considered.

Book excerpt: In the new millennium era, rubber materials are vigorously used in many industries including automotive that cover a wide range of applications such as tires, seals, belts, bushes and engine mounts. Rubber is an ideal material for many applications because it can withstand very large strain with no permanent deformation or fracture. The behavior of material under repeated loads differs from static loads. Elastomers fail at cyclic stress or strain amplitude much lower than static stress or strain. It is based on growth of cracks through the material. The fatigue analysis and its lifetime evaluation are very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability of the rubber components. Design of rubber against fatigue failure is one of the important topics to be focussed for checking the failures during its operation life. Many mechanical and environmental factors could prolong the rubber fatigue life. The fatigue failure process of materials is explained by two approaches including crack initiation and crack propagation. The present work deals with investigation of the fatigue behavior using rubber dumbbell test specimens under uniaxial loading. The material used in this study is a vulcanized natural rubber with a typical engine mount formulation and the hardness of International Rubber Hardness Degree 60. Test specimens were designed based on type 2 of MS ISO 37 standard and used for tensile and fatigue tests, both in ambient temperature. Fatigue tests were conducted under the displacement controlled condition with a sine waveform of 0.1 Hz and the ratio of the minimum displacement to the maximum displacement was equal to zero. The experimental results were presented under strain controlled condition. For investigation of the fatigue damage behavior, a theoretical equation was developed based on the continuum damage mechanics theory. The Ogden strain energy potential of first order was used for defining a constitutive relation of the natural rubber. The proposed theoretical formula was based on function of the strain range under cyclic loading to determine the fatigue life of elastomeric material. The ability of predicted fatigue life shows a reasonable agreement of 98% with experimental values. The experimental results and theoretical equation were validated with the previous experimental data which show a good agreement of 97% and 93% respectively.
