Book excerpt: Liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed (LSCFB) reactors are obtaining extensive attraction in the extraction process of functional proteins from industrial broth. A typical LSCFB is comprised of a riser, a downcomer, a liquid-solid separator, a top solids-return pipe and a bottom solids-return pipe. In light of the literature review conducted in this research, a detailed modeling of the protein extraction using an LSCFB ion-exchange system requires a microscopic study including hydrodynamic field, mass transfer and kinetics reactions. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to simulate the hydrodynamics of the two phase flow in an LSCFB riser. The model is based on Eulerian-Eulerian (E-E) approach incorporating the kinetic theory of granular flow. The predicted flow characteristics agree well with our earlier experimental data. Furthermore, the model can predict the residence time of both liquid and solid phases in the riser using a pulse technique. A numerical model was developed to predict the protein extraction process using an LSCFB ion exchange system. The model for the riser is an extension of the previous CFD hydrodynamic model for the riser incorporating the kinetics reaction. The model for the downcomer includes a one-dimensional mathematical model using the adsorption kinetics correlations. The numerical predictions were compared favorably with the experimental data from a lab-scale system. The model was used to investigate the effects of operating condition on the protein production rate and the system efficiency. For further study on the hydrodynamics in the downcomer of an LSCFB, the CFD technique was used to simulate the counter-current two phase flow in the downcomer. The model is based on E-E approach incorporating the kinetic theory of granular flow. The predicted results agree well with our earlier experimental data. Furthermore, it is shown that the bed expansion of the particles in the downcomer is directly affected by the superficial liquid velocity in downcomer and solids circulation rate. As results, it is demonstrated that the developed CFD model can be adapted to simulate and control the other applications of the LSCFB, such as wastewater treatment, petroleum and metallurgical industries.

Book excerpt: Traditional modeling of fluidized bed operations has focused on the development of models and correlations for specific systems or narrow areas of application. With recent advances in computing power, new methods of modeling fluidization are possible. One such approach is the Computational Fluid Dynamic Discrete Particle Method (CFD-DPM), which treats the fluid as a continuum and the particles as discrete Newtonian entities. The promise of the CFD-DPM approach lies in its ability to incorporate particle interactions in a way that previous models could not. One area of fluidization that has not been actively modeled is the inclusion of non-traditional forces in the fluidization operation. As an example, the use of external magnetic fields in fluidization has provided some interesting applications including; fluidized beds capable of operation in micro-gravity, manipulation of bed structure, and stabilizing bubbling fluidized beds. The ability to model external forces and particle interactions would increase our understanding of these phenomena and potentially lead to new applications for fluidization. A Computational Fluid Dynamic Discrete Particle Method code, named Particle-X, is developed from first principles. The development includes the consideration of external fields and forces, as well as inter-particle forces. The code is validated against experimental data collected from a variety of fluidized bed operations. Particle-X can be used as a tool for the scientific investigation of fluidization under conditions that cannot be accurately reproduced in a laboratory environment; specifically the development of various fluidization operations for use in micro-gravity is considered.

Book excerpt: Numerical simulation of voidage distributions and bed expansions is carried out in a liquid-solid fluidized bed in the present work. Effects of drag force models as well as virtual mass force and lift force are studied in the prediction of particle flow characteristics; simulated results indicated that both virtual mass force and lift force could not be neglected in liquid-solid fluidized bed. Different superficial velocities of liquid phase are also studied to investigate the effects of operating conditions on the distribution of particle concentration and velocities. The coefficient of restitution varied from 0.6 to 0.99, and the effects of radial distribution function models on granular pressure and granular temperature are also studied. Different drag models exhibit various particle velocity distributions, while the Gibilaro drag model failed in predicting the liquid-solid drag to some extent in this study. A comprehensive simulation model was proposed for predicting the two-phase flow characteristics in the liquid-solid fluidized bed. Predicted axial void fraction agrees qualitatively and quantitatively well with the experimental results in the literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-phase and three-phase fluidized beds have been applied successfully to many industrial processes such as in the H-oil process for hydrogenation and hydrodesulfurization of residual oil, the H-coal process for coal liquefaction, Fischer-Tropsch process, and the bio-oxidation process for wastewater treatment. A semi-fluidized bed has the advantages of both the packed and the fluidized beds as it can partly over come the disadvantages of a fluidized bed, namely back-mixing of solids, attrition of particles and erosion of surfaces, and those of a packed bed, such as non-uniformity in bed temperatures, segregation of solids and channeling. Semi-fluidized beds have been applied successfully to many industrial processes (physical, chemical and biochemical)such as in the filtration, adsorption, catalytic reactions, heavy metal removal and recovery, coal pyrolysis, bio-oxidation, ethanol fermentation, granule tablet manufacturing etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A column which contains a series of three fluidized beds for counter-current contacting of solid particles with a gas stream has been studied. Successful, independent control of solids holdup on each stage has been achieved by manipulating the field of a magnetic distributor-downcomer on each stage. Two methods to manipulate the field were investigated: an "on/off" method versus a continuous adjustment of the DC current used to create the field (the "leaking valve"). A model of the column, which includes pressure fluctuations in each fluidized bed, was used to design a control law based on proportional feedback control with some logic statements to compensate for interactions. Both simulated and actual performances in setpoint and disturbance rejection experiments were obtained with solids consisting of 100 percent iron, 50/50, and 25/75 percent mixtures of iron and sand. In all cases the gas stream was air. The leaking valve approach was found to be more efficient in terms of average power consumption and in some experiments was found to yield better performances. This is the first study of the magnetic distributor-downcomer under conditions where there is a net flow of solids through the fluidized bed. This is also the first study of a process where multiple fluidized bed stages are used and interactions are analyzed. The study of the staged fluidized beds when not all the solids are magnetic yielded new results on particle segregation within a bed as well as modifications needed in the control law.
