The introduction of biological-inspired morphing is particularly attractive in that highly-agile birds present examples of desired shapes and configurations. A previous study adopted such morphing by designing a multiple-joint wing that represented the shoulder and elbow of a bird. The resulting variable-gull aircraft could rotate the wing section vertically at these joints to alter the flight dynamics. This paper extends that multiple-joint concept to allow a variable-sweep wing with independent inboard and outboard sections. The aircraft is designed and analyzed to demonstrate the range of flight dynamics which result from the morphing. In particular, the vehicle is shown to have enhanced crosswind rejection which is a certainly critical metric for the urban environments in which these aircraft are anticipated to operate. Mission capability can be enabled by morphing an aircraft to optimize its aerodynamics and associated flight dynamics for each maneuver. Such optimization often consider the steady-state behavior of the configuration; however, the transient behavior must also be analyzed. In particular, the time-varying inertias have an effect on the flight dynamics that can adversely affect mission performance if not properly compensated. These inertia terms cause coupling between the longitudinal and lateral-directional dynamics even for maneuvers around trim. A simulation of a variable-sweep aircraft undergoing a symmetric morphing for an altitude change shows a noticeable lateral translation in the flight path because of the induced asymmetry.

In order to calculate the properties of many wing configurations efficiently and rapidly, a model of a morphing aircraft is needed. This paper develops an aerodynamic model and a dynamic model of a morphing flying wing aircraft. The dynamic model includes realistic aerodynamic forces, consisting of lift, drag, and pitching moment about the leading edge, calculated using a constant strength source doublet panel method. The panel method allows for the calculation of aerodynamic forces due to large scale shape changing effects. The aerodynamic model allows for asymmetric configurations in order to generate rolling and yawing moments. The dynamic model calculates state information for the morphing wing based on the aerodynamic forces from the panel method. The model allows for multiple shape changing degrees-of-freedom for the wing, including thickness, sweep, dihedral angle, and chord length. Results show the model provides a versatile and computationally efficient tool for calculating the aerodynamic forces on the morphing aircraft and using these forces to show the associated states.

Used in the early design stages for aircraft and spacecraft, these methods have provided a fundamental understanding of physical phenomena and enabled designers to predict and analyze critical characteristics of new vehicles, including the capability to control or modify unsatisfactory behavior. For example, the relatively recent emergence and routine use of extremely powerful digital computer hardware and software has had a major impact on design capabilities and procedures. Sophisticated new airflow measurement and visualization systems permit the analyst to conduct micro- and macro-studies of properties within flow fields on and off the surfaces of models in advanced wind tunnels. Trade studies of the most efficient geometrical shapes for aircraft can be conducted with blazing speed within a broad scope of integrated technical disciplines, and the use of sophisticated piloted simulators in the vehicle development process permits the most important segment of operations-the human pilot-to make early assessments of the acceptability of the vehicle for its intended mission. Knowledgeable applications of these tools of the trade dramatically reduce risk and redesign, and increase the marketability and safety of new aerospace vehicles. Arguably, one of the more viable and valuable design tools since the advent of flight has been testing of subscale models. As used herein, the term "model" refers to a physical article used in experimental analyses of a larger full-scale vehicle. The reader is probably aware that many other forms of mathematical and computer-based models are also used in aerospace design; however, such topics are beyond the intended scope of this document. Model aircraft have always been a source of fascination, inspiration, and recreation for humans since the earliest days of flight. Within the scientific community, Leonardo da Vinci, George Cayley, and the Wright brothers are examples of early aviation pioneers who frequently used models during their scientific efforts to understand and develop flying machines. Progress in the technology associated with model testing in worldwide applications has firmly established model aircraft as a key element in new aerospace research and development programs. Models are now routinely used in many applications and roles, including aerodynamic data gathering in wind tunnel investigations for the analysis of full-scale aircraft designs, proof-of-concept demonstrators for radical aeronautical concepts, and problem-solving exercises for vehicles already in production. The most critical contributions of aerospace models are to provide confidence and risk reduction for new designs and to enhance the safety and efficiency of existing configurations. The objective of the material presented here is to provide the reader with an overview of some of the more interesting free-flight model testing techniques that have been developed and the role that the testing has played in fundamental and applied research, as well as in support of the development of some of the Nation's more important civil and military aerospace programs. The material also includes discussions of the development of the specialized facilities and equipment required for dynamic model tests.

The analyses have included aerodynamic modeling, flight dynamics and trajectory optimization. Two different nonconventional aircrafts are analyzed, a V-shape morphing wings and a Linked UAV system. A modern adaptation of Prandtl's liftingline method is utilized to analyze the aerodynamics of both systems. This method can compute the aerodynamic forces for a system of lifting surfaces with arbitrary camber, sweep, dihedral, position and orientation. The V-shape morphing wings consist of a wing configuration that has two panels, an out-of-plane dihedral section and a horizontal section. An analysis of the aircraft turning dynamics shows that by manipulating the dihedral angles, of the V-shape wings, either by symmetric or asymmetric wing shape changes, can affect the turning capabilities of an aircraft to perform a variety of different missions depending on the importance of each of the turning performance measurements. A linked UAV concept, where individual UAVs link at high altitude, creates an aerodynamically efficient system of aircraft which has long endurance capabilities and can cruise for extended periods with significantly reduced power loads. This dissertation presents an analysis of close proximity aerodynamics and aircraft dynamics of two Linked UAVs. As the UAVs approach each other for wingtip docking there are strong aerodynamic coupling between their wings tips. An aerodynamic disturbance intensity field has been generated, utilizing both simulation and wind tunnel data, to determine a trajectory for the two UAVs to approach each other for midair docking. Finally, two optimal trajectories, a 2-D and 3-D docking trajectories are generated and compared. Dynamic wind tunnel test are performed to compare different midair wingtip docking trajectories. The results of the optimization concludes that a trajectory with a span-wise approach is more desirable since it goes through the least aerodynamic disturbances and requires less control effort to perform the midair docking maneuver.
