Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this textbook, the author teaches readers how to model and simulate a unit process operation through developing mathematical model equations, solving model equations manually, and comparing results with those simulated through software. It covers both lumped parameter systems and distributed parameter systems, as well as using MATLAB and Simulink to solve the system model equations for both. Simplified partial differential equations are solved using COMSOL, an effective tool to solve PDE, using the fine element method. This book includes end of chapter problems and worked examples, and summarizes reader goals at the beginning of each chapter.

Book excerpt: The interest in control of nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) sys tems has been triggered by the need to achieve tight distributed control of transport-reaction processes that exhibit highly nonlinear behavior and strong spatial variations. Drawing from recent advances in dynamics of PDE systems and nonlinear control theory, control of nonlinear PDEs has evolved into a very active research area of systems and control. This book the first of its kind- presents general methods for the synthesis of nonlinear and robust feedback controllers for broad classes of nonlinear PDE sys tems and illustrates their applications to transport-reaction processes of industrial interest. Specifically, our attention focuses on quasi-linear hyperbolic and parabolic PDE systems for which the manipulated inputs and measured and controlled outputs are distributed in space and bounded. We use geometric and Lyapunov-based control techniques to synthesize nonlinear and robust controllers that use a finite number of measurement sensors and control actuators to achieve stabilization of the closed-loop system, output track ing, and attenuation of the effect of model uncertainty. The controllers are successfully applied to numerous convection-reaction and diffusion-reaction processes, including a rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition reactor and a Czochralski crystal growth process. The book includes comparisons of the proposed nonlinear and robust control methods with other approaches and discussions of practical implementation issues.

Book excerpt: Modeling and Control of Dynamic Spatially Distributed Systems: Pharmaceutical Processes provides a balanced approach to help readers to get started quickly in the field of biochemical pharmaceuticals. From a theoretical perspective, dynamic spatially distributed systems are introduced to address their industrial applications. After identifying problems, the book provides readers with modeling and control system design techniques via a novel fuzzy set (class of objects with a continuum of grades of membership, to describe the grade of the object belonging to this fuzzy set) and intelligent computation methods. From an application perspective, the book provides a thorough understanding of Good Manufacture Practices (GMP) and the importance of identification, modelling, and intelligent control of such systems, reducing the test-and-error cost, and the R&D design time cycle of original drug development. - Provides an updated, supplemental knowledge to the body of distributed parameter systems - Covers control and analysis framework based on a state-space approach for a non-standard model from industrial complex systems - Presents a novel proposed fuzzy set and applies it to case studies to illustrate its feasibility - Includes a control system design solution from perspective of medicine production

Book excerpt: With increased environmental awareness and rising costs, manufacturers are investing in real time monitoring and control of dyeing to increase its efficiency and quality. This book reviews ways of automating the dyeing process as well as ways of understanding key processes in dyeing, including dye transport in fluid systems. This understanding is then used to create models to simulate the dyeing process which can then be used to develop appropriate measurement and control systems. Control of variables such as temperature, pH, conductivity and dye concentration can then be used to ensure a more consistent and cost-effective dyeing process. - Reviews the dyeing process and dye house automation, and the factors that affect dyeing quality and common difficulties in the process. - Explains the principles underlying the dyeing process and provides a thorough understanding of the mathematical models that can be used to approximate it. - Discusses techniques for monitoring dyebaths and controlling the dyeing process.

Book excerpt: Optimal design, optimal control, and parameter estimation of systems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) give rise to a class of problems known as PDE-constrained optimization. The size and complexity of the discretized PDEs often pose significant challenges for contemporary optimization methods. With the maturing of technology for PDE simulation, interest has now increased in PDE-based optimization. The chapters in this volume collectively assess the state of the art in PDE-constrained optimization, identify challenges to optimization presented by modern highly parallel PDE simulation codes, and discuss promising algorithmic and software approaches for addressing them. These contributions represent current research of two strong scientific computing communities, in optimization and PDE simulation. This volume merges perspectives in these two different areas and identifies interesting open questions for further research.
