Book excerpt: One of the key factors for improving the mobility and operating efficiency of trucks is the understanding of the tire-terrain interaction characteristics. Due to the broad range of terrains that trucks may operate over, the understanding process of the tire-terrain interaction is necessary. The terrains for on-road operations are commonly dry or wet surfaces. For off-road operations, a more extensive range of deformable terrains exists, such as dense sand, clayey soil, and gravel. In some cases, vehicles may operate over terrains covered with snow or layers of mixed snow and ice. This research work focuses on modeling and investigating the tire-terrain interaction on several terrains to better predict off-road truck performance. The truck tire used in this research is the off-road Regional Haul Drive (RHD) size 315/80R22.5 drive tire. The truck tire is built node-by-node using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) technique and is validated using different dynamic and static tests that are compared to the manufacturer's measured data. The terrains are modeled and calibrated using the Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) instead of the classical FEA technique. Furthermore, two soil moisturizing techniques are presented to model moist soils, the virtually calibrated moist sand is validated against physical measurements. The in-plane and out-of-plane rigid ring tire model parameters are calculated for the off-road tire running on various terrains. The tire-terrain interaction is performed under several operating conditions and the effect of the operating conditions are investigated. Furthermore, a detailed study of the rolling resistance coefficient prediction over different terrains is presented. In this research work, the hydroplaning phenomenon is investigated. The hydroplaning speed of the tire is computed under different operating conditions. A novel equation to predict the truck tire hydroplaning speed as a function of several tire operational parameters is developed and validated against an empirical equation. In addition, the rigid ring tire model is integrated into a highly advanced full vehicle model to predict the truck on-road and off-road performance. Nonetheless, in order to validate the simulation results of the truck tire-terrain interaction obtained in this thesis physical testing was carried out in Gothenburg, Sweden by Volvo Groups Truck Technology.

They support the vehicle weight and cushion road surface irregularities to provide a comfortable ride. Tires are designed in a way that provide necessary tractive, braking, and cornering forces to form a safe and stable ride for ground vehicles. Recent advancements in computerized and virtual modeling provided an efficient methodology for accurate prediction of tire characteristics. In this thesis Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is employed as a method to accurately construct a new virtual wide-base tire model, validate it, and then study rolling resistance of the tire on a hard surface. This thesis includes tire-soil interaction and effects of soil on tires rolling resistance. To accurately study rolling resistance on soft soil, various soil models are created by using FEA and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), as a representative of dry sand soil. Soil models are calibrated by using shear-displacement and pressure-sinkage simulation tests. The simulation results are then compared to published data. Also, the created soil models are compared to each other to determine the optimum one based on computational time efficiency and accuracy. SPH, as the accurate current method for soil modeling, has long computational solving time. In this thesis FEA/SPH hybrid soil models are studied and modified to achieve lower computational solving time while having the desirable accuracy. Rolling resistance of tire on each soil model is carried out through various loads and inflation pressures and the simulation results are compared to physical test results to examine the accuracy of each soil model. The new hybrid soil model created in this thesis reduces the computational CPU time almost by half and slightly increases accuracy compared to full SPH soil model.

The modelling and validation of a High Lug Farm Service (HLFS) agricultural tire is carried out in order to accurately predict tire-terrain interaction. In conjunction with the tire, two agricultural soils are modelled using Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method and calibrated to experimental results. An analytical off-road rigid ring model is used to model the HLFS tire's interaction with a surface. The soil dynamics of the HLFS tire running on soil is researched and compared to experimental results. Steering characteristics including self-aligning moment, rolling resistance coefficients, relaxation lengths were obtained under various operating conditions.

Book excerpt: Cornering performance characteristics of wheeled vehicles substantially rely on the forces/moments generated from interactions between pneumatic tires and terrains. Accurate models are thus required to predict these forces/moments to be employed in vehicle simulations for development and design. The goal of this dissertation research is to provide a virtual testing environment in Pam-Crash software as an alternative to actual tests for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) analysis of rolling tire interactions on deformable terrains. SPH method and hydrodynamics-elastic plastic material were used to simulate different soil types that are often utilized in vehicle-terrain interactions. Two pressure-sinkage and shear-strength experiments were used to calibrate the terrains. The simulation findings were compared with the measured data that showed good agreements. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the rolling resistance coefficient and cornering properties of the tire over various terrains is presented, as well as the development of Genetic Algorithms (GA) to determine the mathematical relations for the cornering force, self-aligning moment, and overturning moment as functions of important operating factors. Cornering tests were performed for the RHD tire operating over the mud soil to examine the validity of the GA-based cornering force, self-aligning moment, and overturning moment relationships. It was concluded that the identified mathematical relations could provide very good estimations of the cornering characteristics under a broad range of operating conditions and soils.

Design and tuning of such control units requires large amounts of trial and error modifications as well as experiments. Therefore the need for accurate and computationally efficient models has increased to meet the demands of vehicle handling simulations for designing various control units. Tire-terrain model forms the center piece of such vehicle model development. This thesis aims at developing a discrete, lumped-parameter, physical model for capturing transient interactions between a deformable tire and a deformable terrain. Specifically, the model accounts for the radial and the tangential deformation in the tire as well as the normal and the tangential deformation of terrain. Furthermore, the model captures onset and loss of contact, localized stick and slip phases for each of the discrete elements of the tire. The model also characterize events that triggers generic transitions between the different phases of the tire elements. Moreover, special emphasis have been placed on establishing internal mathematical consistency of the formulation and energetic consistency of the model. The thesis presents detailed analysis of two instances of tire-terrain interactions under steady state condition. The thesis further presents the application of a non-linear regression technique for identification of the seven model parameters and, in selected cases additional unknown kinematic variables. Specifically, the model is fit to experimental load-deflection, grossthrust, and net-pull data demonstrating good quantitative agreement. The thesis further includes the preliminary efforts to extend the planar contact model to capture interactions in the lateral direction. Specifically, a method to uniquely resolve the time evolution of internal state variable during slip is presented. Furthermore, the issue of the motion of the contact points at the onset of contact is also addressed with some unanswered questions.

Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to integrate a continuum-based deformable tire and terrain interaction model into a general-use physics-based simulation environment capable of off-road vehicle mobility analysis and high-performance computing potential. Specifically, the physics-based deformable tire and terrain models which were recently proposed and validated by Yamashita, et al. will be implemented into the structure of the multi-physics simulation engine Chrono. In off-road vehicle mobility analysis, empirical and analytical models have been commonly used for vehicle-terrain interaction. While these models utilize experimental data or terramechanics theories to create quick predictive mobility models, they are unable to capture the highly nonlinear behavior of soft soil deformation, which can lead to inaccurate or unreliable results. In order to resolve these limitations, the use of physics-based numerical approaches have been proposed. These methods make use of finite element and discrete element simulations to describe the interaction between the vehicle and deformable terrain. Continuum-based finite element models transfer tire forces to the terrain and model the deformation with elasto-plastic constitutive models. Discrete element soil uses a large number of small rigid body particles to describe the microscale behavior of granular terrain, with the deformation of the soil represented by the motion and contact of the particles. While these physics-based models offer a more accurate vehicle-terrain interaction model, the solution procedure can become complex and computationally expensive since co-simulation techniques are often used. To address these issues, the analysis of physics-based full vehicle dynamics simulations utilizing high-fidelity deformable tire and terrain models in a multi-physics engine with high-performance computing capability is desired.

Book excerpt: Significant time and cost savings can be realized through the use of virtual simulation of testing procedures across diverse areas of research and development. Fully detailed virtual truck models using the simplified off-road rigid-ring model parameters may further increase these economical savings within the automotive industry. The determination of the off-road rigid-ring parameters is meant to facilitate the simulation of full vehicle models developed by Volvo Group Trucks Technology. This works features new FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tire and SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) soil interaction modeling techniques. The in-plane and out-of-plane off-road rigid-ring parameters are predicted for an RHD (Regional Haul Drive) truck tire at varying operating conditions. The tire model is validated through static and dynamic virtual tests that are compared to previously published literature. Both the in-plane and out-of-plane off-road rigid-ring RHD parameters were successfully predicted. The majority of the in-plane parameters are strongly influenced by the inflation pressure of the tire because the in-plane parameters are derived with respect to the mode of vibration of the tire. The total equivalent vertical stiffness on a dry sand is not as heavily influenced by the inflation pressure compared to predictions on a hard surface. For perspective, at 110 psi, the dry sand total vertical stiffness is nearly nine times smaller than that determined on the hard surface, while the lateral stiffness on soft soil (Dry Sand) is at a minimal of three times higher than that of the corresponding values tested on a hard surface. The cornering stiffness is primarily load dependant because the inflation pressure is only noticeably influential at high vertical loads. More importantly, the soil builds in front of the tire, creating what is called a bulldozing effect, during high slip angles. The additional lateral force of the soil exerted onto the tire during cornering maneuvers may contribute to higher than expected results and may be confirmed through future investigation of the cohesion of the soil model.
