Book excerpt: This thesis develops small-signal and large-signal models to investigate the dynamic performance of a hybrid wind-diesel energy system interfaced to a utility grid. The study system comprises a 3.5-MVA diesel-generator unit operating in parallel with a 750-kVA variable-speed, squirrel-cage induction generator, wind unit. The wind unit is interfaced to the power network through a back-to-back voltage-sourced converter system. The controllers of the machine-side converter regulate the mechanical torque and the shaft speed of the induction generator to obtain maximum power production under fluctuating wind-speed conditions. The controllers of the grid-side converter maintain the dc-link voltage and the ac-side converter terminal voltage within the specified limits and ensure delivery of the captured wind power to the network. The diesel-generator unit is equipped with excitation and governor systems to compensate for (i) output power changes of the wind unit due to the intermittent nature of the wind, and (ii) changes in the load demand. Based on small-signal (eigen) analyses in the MATLABRTM software environment, the controller parameters of the wind and the diesel units are selected to guarantee (i) minimization of transients due to switch over between two consecutive modes of operation, (ii) voltage/angle stability during islanded (autonomous) mode of operation, and (iii) local load requirements in terms of voltage and real/reactive power. The developed eigen analysis tool is structured to accommodate any network configuration, any number of wind-diesel units, and any variable-speed wind-unit technology. The results obtained from time-domain simulations, in the PSCAD RTM/EMTDCRTM software environment, demonstrate that proper adjustment of the controllers of the wind and diesel units promote "ride-through" capability in the event of (i) pre-planned transitions between different modes of operation, (ii) pre-planned islanding and re-connection of the units to the power network, and (iii) short circuits, accidental islanding and subsequent re-connection attempts to the network.

Book excerpt: Investigation of the voltage and frequency control of a wind diesel hybrid system with several diesel gensets and dump load with Simulink models and validation with some measurements on a real system. The wind power is just depending on the wind conditions. Hence, the diesel generation has to include the enough control in order to keep the permissible frequency and voltage limits and to verify the power balance at every moment. These two are the main points where the analysis must be focused on. Many simulations about these systems have already been done, but a possible extension can be including in the model several wind turbines and diesel gensets, which could work at the same time. That complicates the analysis due to the interaction among them, and even more when setting some different dynamic parameters on the diesel gensets, as the inertia values. Regarding to a real system with this performance, there are some additional difficulties that the system has got, just because it is operating as an isolated one: bigger voltages and frequency deviations; the smaller the electrical machines, the more important the saturation; etc.

Book excerpt: The broad objective of the research presented herein is to analyze dynamical interactions in offshore structures under combined wind and wave loads for enhanced power delivery and reliability of hybrid wind-wave generation systems. As an offshore structure representative, a model for a moored floating cylinder at finite depth is developed employing linear wave theory coupled with wind-induced effects. Although detailed wave models have often been incorporated while studying the dynamics of such cylinders, wind-induced effects have been mostly modeled as an axial drag term that affects the drift of the structure along the wind direction. In this thesis, the effects of not only wind-induced drag, but also lift and oscillations on the structure (i.e. the floating inclined cylinder) are studied. Further, the effects of vortex shedding are also considered. Cross-flow principle is used to calculate the wind loads on the floating cylinder. Assuming small wave steepness and a large radius of cylinder (in comparison to the wavelength), linear wave diffraction and radiation theory coupled with wind-induced effects is employed to analyze the dynamic response of the inclined floating cylinder. A linear permanent magnetic generator has also been implemented to analyze its power generation. Dynamic response of an inclined floating cylinder subjected to coupled wind-wave loading system are presented and discussed while highlighting the increasing relevance of such modeling strategies for hybrid wind-wave power generation systems and their control.

Book excerpt: The scope of this chapter is to assess the performance of hybrid power plants and more specifically demonstrate the challenges of partnering the wind turbines with gas turbines. A dynamic engine model of a gas turbine along with a wind turbine model is developed to simulate plethora of scenarios for optimizing their operation in terms of efficiency, fuel consumption and NOx emissions. Moreover, a comparison between the hybrid power plant and a twin gas turbine power plant is carried out to assess the improvement in both NOx emissions and fuel consumption. The results demonstrate and illustrate the significant impact that dynamic performance modeling has in the optimization and controller design of hybrid power plant.

Book excerpt: Wind diesel power systems (WDPSs) are isolated microgrids that combine diesel generators (DGs) with wind turbine generators (WTGs). Often, WDPS are the result of adding WTGs to a previous existing diesel power plant located in a remote place where there is an available wind resource. By means of power supplied by WTGs, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are reduced. WDPSs are isolated power systems with low inertia where important system frequency and voltage variations occur. WDPS dynamic modeling and simulation allows short-term simulations to be carried out to obtain detailed electrical variable transients so that WDPS stability and power quality can be tested. This book includes papers on several subjects regarding WDPSs: the main topic of interest is WDPS dynamic modeling and simulation, but related areas such as the sizing of the different WDPS components, studies concerning the control of WDPSs or the use of energy storage systems (ESSs) in WDPSs and the benefits that ESSs provide to WDPS are also discussed. The book also deals with related AC isolated microgrids, such as wind-hydro microgrids or wind-photovoltaic-diesel microgrids.

Book excerpt: Traditionally, the study of internal combustion engines operation has focused on the steady-state performance. However, the daily driving schedule of automotive and truck engines is inherently related to unsteady conditions. In fact, only a very small portion of a vehicle’s operating pattern is true steady-state, e. g. , when cruising on a motorway. Moreover, the most critical conditions encountered by industrial or marine engines are met during transients too. Unfortunately, the transient operation of turbocharged diesel engines has been associated with slow acceleration rate, hence poor driveability, and overshoot in particulate, gaseous and noise emissions. Despite the relatively large number of published papers, this very important subject has been treated in the past scarcely and only segmentally as regards reference books. Merely two chapters, one in the book Turbocharging the Internal Combustion Engine by N. Watson and M. S. Janota (McMillan Press, 1982) and another one written by D. E. Winterbone in the book The Thermodynamics and Gas Dynamics of Internal Combustion Engines, Vol. II edited by J. H. Horlock and D. E. Winterbone (Clarendon Press, 1986) are dedicated to transient operation. Both books, now out of print, were published a long time ago. Then, it seems reasonable to try to expand on these pioneering works, taking into account the recent technological advances and particularly the global concern about environmental pollution, which has intensified the research on transient (diesel) engine operation, typically through the Transient Cycles certification of new vehicles.
