Book excerpt: The existing, comprehensive fixed-bed model of the Columbia River estuary was used to determine the need for rehabilitating all or part of the outer end of the existing north jetty. This jetty has seriously deteriorated during the past 25 years, and a rehabilitation program has been undertaken. Model tests were conducted to determine the effects of various stages of repair of the outer 1800 ft of the jetty on the hydraulic, salinity, and shoaling characteristics of the entrance area. Test results consist of tidal elevation measurements, current velocity measurements, salinity measurements, photographs of surface and bottom current patterns, and shoaling patterns. (Author).

This book was released on 1971 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model of the estuary of the Columbia River was built and tested at the University of California, Berkeley, during the years 1932 to 1936 to study the effect of proposed changes in the navigation channels on the currents and sediment movement. The report deals primarily with the model itself and not with the practical problems of channel maintenance and improvement, but some information regarding the regimen of the Columbia is necessary background for understanding the problems which were to be studied in the model. Book excerpt: With today's problems surrounding shoreline protection, this book should be of great assistance. This manual contains a compilation of 2 Navy and 2 Corps manuals all relative to the subject of coastal protection and the affects tidal action has on our shorelines. The titles included are: Coastal Protection is a U.S. Navy publication which deals specifically with waves and their characteristics. In order to prepare safe designs, the normal and extreme waves which will act against the structure must be evaluated so that a design wave can be selected. Pilebuck takes the user through this phase into the application of data to actual design of breakwaters and seawalls. Storm Surge Analysis: High tides and wind-generated waves combine to provide a potential for abnormally high water levels and flooding during hurricanes or other serious storms. An understanding of this phenomena is essential in order to plan control structures or design others.
