Book excerpt: Stan Bray provides all the information a ship modeler needs to power a model boat using a live steam power plant. A model engineer and author of wide experience, including editorship of the magazine Model Engineers' Workshop, Bray offers detailed drawings for the construction of simple and advanced steam engines, boilers, and ancillary equipment. Many types of engines--from simple oscillating cylinder to piston and poppet valve--along with the application of radio control to the management of the boiler and engine are covered. Given the huge growth in interest in live steam powered model boats in recent years and the lack of practical details available, the plans and information included in this book will be welcomed by modelers everywhere.

Explore topics such as hull dynamics, propeller selection and boiler capability, along with information on engine performance, boiler safety and hull design. Follow the plans to build a simple screw-driven launch, a fast patrol boat or a twin cylinder paddle steamer. The technical information and theoretical calculations provided explain how boats are designed and allow builders to progress to creating their own models. Making a live steam model boat requires a broad range of skills including machining, silver-soldering, sheet metal work, woodwork and finishing. Part of the enjoyment of model boats comes from this variety of skills and all the required techniques are explained in full.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Next to railways, they are the epitome of historical technology: steamships. No wonder, then, that they also have a special appeal for model builders. To drive one's model not simply with an electric motor, but even more originally with a steam engine, is the dream of many technology fans. If the model then moves across the pond, trailing a plume of steam behind it, the enthusiasm is perfect! But how do you build such a model? What are the possibilities? Which models are suitable? These and many more questions are answered in detail by steamship specialist Thomas Hillenbrand in this book. In addition to the basics of technology and construction, he looks at various types of models, most of which he has successfully built himself - some of them very unusual constructions. The book concludes with an example of the construction of a steamship with a simple superstructure - an ideal introduction to this fascinating branch of model building. So, open the throttle and full steam ahead! From the content: • Some of the history of steam-powered ships and models • Steam as a source of power • The steam boiler • Some information about combustion and the firing of steam boilers • The different versions of the propulsion engine • Commissioning, troubleshooting and repair of the steam system • The propulsion systems of the steamship • Suitable models for steam propulsion • Installation of the steam system in the model • Presentation of different steamship models • Building the Steam Launch Presto

This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT is a wonderful fact in the swift expansion of mechanical knowledge and appliances of the last hundred years that while for unknown ages the wind was the only propelling force used for purposes of navigation, apart from the rude application of power through oars worked by men, the whole scheme of steam transport has grown, practically, to its present wonderful perfection within the lifetime of men yet living. Of course, the idea, as is that of all great inventions, was one of slow growth. It cropped up at various stages through the eighteenth century, and there are faint evidences of gropings in this direction in the latter part of the seventeenth; but these latter were not much more definite than the embodiment of the idea of the telegraph in Puck’s girdle round the earth, and the evidence that men really thought of propelling boats by steam is very meagre until we come to the pamphlet written by Jonathan Hulls, in 1737, in which he gave utterance to a very clear and distinct idea in the matter. It struggled through a very backward infancy of fifty years and more, certain memorable names appearing now and then to help it along, as that of Watt (without whose improvements in the steam-engine it must still have remained in swaddling-clothes), Fitch, De Jouffroy, Rumsey, Symington, and finally Fulton, who, however much he may have learned from his predecessors, has unquestionably the credit of putting afloat the first commercially successful steamboat. He is thus worthy of all the honor accorded him; much of it came too late, as he died at the comparatively early age of fifty, after passing through the harassments which seem naturally to lie in the path of the innovator. A graphic history of the wonderful changes wrought in this great factor of the world’s progress was set forth during the summer of 1886, at the International Exhibition at Liverpool, where, by model and drawing, the various steps were made more completely visible and tangible than, perhaps, ever before. True, the relics of the earlier phases of the steamship age, when its believers were but few and generally of small account, were sparse, but the exhibits of later models, from the date of the inception of transatlantic traffic, preparations for which were begun in earnest by laying down the steamship Great Western in 1836, were frequent enough, and the whole of the steps in the development of the means of ocean traffic from then till now were sufficiently well shown.

Book excerpt: The book, "When Substance Abuse Attacks Your Home," is written with great pain and many regrets. It shares more than facts and realities about drug addiction. The book also conveys the hard realities that accompany chemical dependency. These details are not appealing, but never the less, brutally honest. The book is filled with up-to-date research on this critical subject. Invaluable information and resources are made easy to retrieve, and practical to use. Among the many special features of this book, is the clear explanation of why it is so difficult for a drug addict to break away from his/her bondage. The relational aspect of substance abuse is uniquely put side by side the union between a husband and wife, "until death do us part" This book offers the reader facts easy to comprehend and numerous experimental insights. Since this book is written from a family's viewpoint into substance abuse, the reader cannot help~ but feel the pain and see the tears a family lives through when one of their loved ones is chemical dependent. While the main focus is on the drug addict, another touching and helpful feature, is the unmasking of the torments of the addict's parents and siblings.
