Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have experienced significant changes in various spheres of their lives during the last decades as Bangladesh made economic progress. Yet women’s economic engagement and empowerment are subdued, as they cannot make sufficient choices for themselves. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the economic developments in gender equality in Bangladesh. Through examining women’s participation in the labour force, ownership and control of household assets, use and control of financial assets, and opportunities for entrepreneurship, the authors have made concrete recommendations to overcome challenges that lie ahead for women’s economic empowerment. This book is an important contribution to the knowledge on interventions required by the policy makers and broader stakeholders towards narrowing gender gaps. --Fahmida Khatun, PhD, Executive Director, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Bangladesh The women’s story is central to Bangladesh’s economic and social transformation. There is an urgent need to deepen researched understanding of the multidimensional pathways of women’s economic empowerment and extent of real progress made. Voices to Choices is an important contribution to this story. Surely, the journey of women’s economic empowerment remains a long and challenging one. Realizing the full benefits of new opportunities is often hampered by both new and entrenched insecurities. The task is as much one of empowering women’s agency as of dismantling barriers. The responsibility is as much women’s as society’s. --Hossain Zillur Rahman, PhD, Executive Chairman, Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) This book provides critical insights and is timely, as it outlines how girls and women in Bangladesh have gained more opportunities in labor force participation, control over household and financial assets, as well as greater prospects for entrepreneurship. The findings will greatly contribute to future policy and planning for government and key stakeholders working to advance women’s economic empowerment in the country. --Sabina Faiz Rashid, PhD, Dean and Professor, BRAC James P. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Guide to Human Resources and the Law will help you navigate complex and potentially costly Human Resources issues. You'll know what to do (and what not to do) to avoid costly mistakes or oversights, confront HR problems - legally and effectively - and understand the rules. The Complete Guide to Human Resources and the Law offers fast, dependable, plain English legal guidance for HR-related situations from ADA accommodation, diversity training, and privacy issues to hiring and termination, employee benefit plans, compensation, and recordkeeping. It brings you the most up-to-date information as well as practical tips and checklists in a well-organized, easy-to-use resource. The 2010 Edition provides new and expanded coverage of issues such as: Discussion of the economic recovery measures under the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, the Worker, Retiree and Employer Recovery Act of 2008, and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 The PBGC flat-rate premium for single employer plans for 2009 is $34/participant The requirement of distributing Summary Annual Reports to participants and beneficiaries has been replaced by the requirement of issuing annual funding notices for most benefit plans; DOL issued a model notice and FAQs for implementing the requirement Courts continued to develop standards under Metropolitan Life Insurance v. Glenn, 128 S. Ct. 2343 (2008), for reviewing claims decisions made by decision-makers (such as plan sponsors and insurers) that have a conflict of interest because they are responsible for paying whatever claims are allowed The Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009, Pub. L. 111-3 (CHIPRA), intended to improve coordination between EGHPs and state Medicaid and SCHIP (coverage for uninsured children) plans, caused EGHP and cafeteria plans to be amended "Michellersquo;s Law, " Pub. L. 110-381, requires EGHPs to extend coverage to employees' dependent children who are covered as post-secondary students if they have to interrupt their studies for health-related reasons More states allowed same-sex couples to marry or have legally related domestic partnerships or civil unions - with implications for work-related benefit plans that cover "spouses. " The requirement of benefit parity between mental and physical illnesses was made permanent by EESA The HITECH Act (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health; part of ARRA) was enacted to strengthen the privacy and security rules under HIPAA, and to promote broader usage of electronic medical records. State Attorneys General now have the power to enforce HIPAA through suits in federal court. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (Pub. L. 111-2) was enacted. It increases the number of employment discrimination suits that can be brought by reversing the Supreme Court's decision that the timing rules for lawsuits begin when an allegedly discriminatory practice is adopted. The Supreme Court extended its string of pro-arbitration cases by ruling in 14 Penn Plaza LLC v. Pyett, 129 S. Ct. 1456 (4/1/09), that a collective bargaining agreement clause that clearly obligates union members to arbitrate ADEA claims is enforceable. The Supreme Court held that federal labor law preempts a California law that forbade employers that receive state contracts or other funding to discuss union matters with employees. As long as employers avoid coercion, federal law seeks to promote wide-open debate on labor issues: Chamber of Commerce v. Brown, 128 S. Ct. 2408 (2008). Another Supreme Court ruling discussed allows unions to charge non-members who pay agency fees in lieu of joining the union amounts representing certain expenses of national litigation: Locke

Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, research, activity, and funding has been devoted to improving the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. In recent years the diversity of those participating in these fields, particularly the participation of women, has improved and there are significantly more women entering careers and studying science, engineering, and medicine than ever before. However, as women increasingly enter these fields they face biases and barriers and it is not surprising that sexual harassment is one of these barriers. Over thirty years the incidence of sexual harassment in different industries has held steady, yet now more women are in the workforce and in academia, and in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine (as students and faculty) and so more women are experiencing sexual harassment as they work and learn. Over the last several years, revelations of the sexual harassment experienced by women in the workplace and in academic settings have raised urgent questions about the specific impact of this discriminatory behavior on women and the extent to which it is limiting their careers. Sexual Harassment of Women explores the influence of sexual harassment in academia on the career advancement of women in the scientific, technical, and medical workforce. This report reviews the research on the extent to which women in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine are victimized by sexual harassment and examines the existing information on the extent to which sexual harassment in academia negatively impacts the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women pursuing scientific, engineering, technical, and medical careers. It also identifies and analyzes the policies, strategies and practices that have been the most successful in preventing and addressing sexual harassment in these settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Queer/Sexual minority which interalia includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (hereinafter LGBT) people is not a new phenomenon in today’s scenario. LGBT share a particular experience of their own sexual desires, as potentially directed toward a person of the same gender. They have transformed these experiences, desires, and practices into a social identity, a sexual orientation, which serves as a marker of individual selves and of a group. This study shows that discrimination and abuse from homophobic/transphobic world in which there is full permission to treat LGBT with cruelty makes it difficult for them to maintain a strong sense of well-being and self-esteem. Study reveals that in India LGBT lives are more secretive as they are suppress to come out easily. This book based on study concludes with some strong and viable recommendations, which are requisite to ensure safe and proper place to LGBT people in society, inculcating humane approach into laws and the criminal justice system. Education and awareness programmes through various means and various places can bring positive changes. Book excerpt: Contemporary scholars have begun to explore non-normative sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression in a growing victimization literature, but very little research is focused on LGBTQ communities’ patterns of offending (beyond sex work) and their experiences with police, the courts, and correctional institutions. This Handbook, the first of its kind in Criminology and Criminal Justice, will break new ground by presenting a thorough treatment of all of these under-explored issues in one interdisciplinary volume that features current empirical work.
