Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are more than 400 miniature railways in Britain. Some are hidden away and privately owned, others are parkland attractions, and some – such as the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch – are large commercial enterprises. They come in an array of gauges (from 5 inches up to 15 inches and sometimes beyond), but their most definitive characteristic is that they can carry passengers, whether sitting astride the rolling stock or inside enclosed carriages. In this colourfully illustrated guide, David Henshaw offers a concise history of miniature railways from the nineteenth century to the modern day, including a whistle-stop tour of the most notable examples open to the public – including the Ravenglass & Eskdale, Bure Valley and Eastleigh Lakeside railways – exploring their layouts, engineering and rolling stock.

Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Model railroading is an activity that captivates people of all ages and genders. There is something endlessly fascinating about trains, and miniature trains are the most fascinating of all. It's a great pastime that provides a creative outlet, a lot of enjoyment, and the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. Model railroading is a very adult pastime that makes you feel like a kid again. Best of all, it's a hobby that you can enjoy as a family, parents and children together. It really is the world's greatest hobby. Many are attracted to model railroading but don't know where to begin. You may have seen the impressive layouts created by model railroad enthusiasts and worry that you don't have sufficient space or resources to create something similar. Having sufficient know-how to assemble track, build scenes, or keep electronic components in good working order may also seem like a deterrent. Cost can also be a factor. However, you don't have to be an expert to build your first model railway. Model railroading has a very large support community. It's easy to find an answer to virtually any question you may have about building and maintaining a model train collection, both in person and on the Internet. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Scale refers to the relationship between model trains and the real thing. O scale used to be called 1:48, with HO scale at 1:87, but measurements have changed somewhat. For the novice, it's best to not get too mired in scale details. Suffice it to say that O scale is the largest model train, and is not very common as it requires more space than most people can allot. HO scale is the most prevalent and the standard for most model railroaders, having the most product selection availability. N is smaller than HO, and although there is a good selection, many hobbyists prefer HO since N requires a higher degree of detail and ability to work with miniature parts. Much depends on individual preference. If you just want miles and miles of track and lots of trains going around, N is great. If you want to re-create an elaborate scene with buildings, people, and geographical features, HO is better. If you get into model railroad building in a big way, you may eventually want to explore other scales, but most model train hobbyists are happiest with HO or N... Buy a copy to keep reading!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model trains must be one of the oldest and most awe inspiring hobbies for both young and old. These miniature trains have captured the imagination of people all over the world for many years. Many model train builders spend hours of their time and do not spare any expense on pursuing this hobby. It becomes all engrossing and affords many happy hours to the hobbyist. There are so many models of trains coming from so many different eras that you can never run out of ideas for new projects. When one project is done usually the idea for the next project is already in place! I have seen the faces of children where these model trains have been exhibited. They are a joy to behold. They do not delight children alone but people of all ages. Many model train builders have made friends all over the world because of this hobby. These hobbyists are always looking for contacts where they can exchange information. There is a lot of information around which makes it more interesting and of course more of a challenge. There seems to be enough suppliers around where you can obtain starter kits and various parts you require. The real challenge is of course when parts have to be made by you or sourced from some supplier far from your home town. Once the love for model trains has bitten you, you will never look back and very few people that started this hobby will stop without any good reason. They will probably carry on right into old age! I hope that you will thoroughly enjoy the information that I have taken great pleasure in putting together for you.

It is a wonderful miniature world of 535 square meters built in HO scale, near the Rotterdam Central Station. There are beautiful Dutch landscapes, Dutch trains and numerous scenes of Dutch lifestyle. Almost 200 square meters represent a miniature version of the city of Rotterdam with it's modern and historic architecture. There are the most famous and special buildings of Rotterdam, for example the Erasmusbridge, the Hotel New York, the new Rotterdam Central Station. And, the port of Rotterdam, one of the largest ports in world, is integrated in this model railway layout. There are the Shipyard IHC Merwede, the big container terminal Maasvlakte, and the RSC Rail Service Center. Almost all types of terminals that are to be found in the port of Rotterdam are built in HO scale, too. Off course, the Dutch coast and polder landscape is an integral part of this miniature world. There are numerous dikes, channels, canals, windmills, pumping station and locks. Every 24 minutes night falls in with beautiful evening- and morning colors generated by dimming the lights in the whole exhibition hall. At night, thousands of miniature bulbs light up the model buildings, trains, cars and ships. Finally, it's hard to describe this amazing atmosphere with words. This was the reason for this picture book. Please, discover and look closely to this miniature world with more than 200 photos.
