Book excerpt: In the light of anecdotal accounts of accidents involving the vehicles, but little hard evidence, MPs urge the Government to collect better data on the use of scooters as well as incidents and injuries where they are involved. To develop sound policy, we need a comprehensive evidence base detailing the number and nature of incidents involving mobility scooters on the UK's pavements and roads. Only by doing so, will issues such as the legal status of mobility scooters, the appropriateness of proficiency tests and the rights of users to take the vehicles on public transport be adequately addressed. The Committee's report notes that the Department for Transport has launched a consultation on many of these issues, but is concerned that after a similar review in 2005, Ministers failed to act on many of its findings. With a growing number of mobility scooter users on the UK's pavements and roads, the MPs call on the Government to take decisive action where necessary.

Book excerpt: In New Mobilities: Smart Planning for Emerging Transportation Technologies, transportation expert Todd Litman examines 12 emerging transportation modes and services that are likely to significantly affect our lives: bike- and carsharing, micro-mobilities, ridehailing and micro-transit, public transit innovations, telework, autonomous and electric vehicles, air taxis, mobility prioritization, and logistics management. Public policies around New Mobilities can either help create heaven, a well-planned transportation system that uses new technologies intelligently, or hell, a poorly planned transportation system that is overwhelmed by conflicting and costly, unhealthy, and inequitable modes. His expert analysis will help planners, local policymakers, and concerned citizens to make informed choices about the New Mobility revolution.

Book excerpt: If eugenics -- the science of eliminating kinds of undesirable human beings from the species record -- came to overdetermine the late 19th century in relation to disability, the 20th century may be best characterized as managing the repercussions for variable human populations. A Cultural History of Disability in the Modern Age provides an interdisciplinary overview of disability as an outpouring of professional, political, and representational efforts to fix, correct, eliminate, preserve, and even cultivate the value of crip bodies. This book pursues analyses of disability's deployment as a wellspring for an alternative ethics of living in and alongside the body different while simultaneously considering the varied social and material contexts of devalued human differences from World War I to the present. In short, this volume demonstrates that, in Ozymandias-like ways, the Western Project of the Human with its perpetuation of body-mind hierarchies lies crumbling in the deserts of failed empires, genocidal furies, and the rejuvenating myths of new nation states in the 20th century. An essential resource for researchers, scholars and students of history, literature, culture, philosophy, rehabilitation, technology, and education, A Cultural History of Disability in the Modern Age explores such themes and topics as: atypical bodies; mobility impairment; chronic pain and illness; blindness; deafness; speech; learning difficulties; and mental health while wrestling with their status as unreliable predictors of what constitutes undesirable humanity.

Their rise in popularity is attributed to their convenience, eco-friendliness, and cost-effectiveness, offering a compelling alternative to traditional transportation. This book aims to provide a comprehensive overview of electric scooter engineering, delving into the technical and practical aspects that underpin these modern marvels. In the following chapters, we will explore the fundamental components and systems that make up an electric scooter, including the motor, battery, controller, and braking system, among others. Each chapter is designed to impart a deep understanding of the design, functionality, and integration of these critical parts, ensuring readers gain a holistic view of electric scooter engineering. Our journey begins with an examination of the motor, the powerhouse of the scooter, where we will discuss different types, their operational principles, and performance characteristics. We will then move on to the battery, the energy source that dictates the scooter’s range and efficiency, delving into types, capacities, and charging mechanisms. The controller, often considered the brain of the scooter, will be our next focus. We will uncover how it manages power distribution and regulates various functions, ensuring optimal performance and safety. Following this, we will explore the structural aspects, including the frame and deck, highlighting the importance of material choice and design in achieving a balance between strength and weight. Wheels and tires, though often overlooked, play a crucial role in ride quality and safety. We will discuss the different types available, their advantages and disadvantages, and how to select the right ones for specific needs. Our examination of the braking system will underscore its importance in ensuring rider safety, covering various technologies and their effectiveness. The suspension system, another critical component, will be analyzed to understand how it enhances ride comfort and stability. We will also look at the electronic systems, including displays and lighting, which provide crucial information and enhance safety. In the final chapters, we will address the integration of all these components into a cohesive system, emphasizing the importance of harmony and balance in electric scooter engineering. We will also touch upon emerging trends and future directions in the field, providing a glimpse into the potential advancements that could shape the next generation of electric scooters. This book is intended for engineers, designers, enthusiasts, and anyone interested in understanding the intricacies of electric scooters. Whether you are a seasoned professional or a curious newcomer, we hope to equip you with the knowledge and insights needed to appreciate the complexity and beauty of electric scooter engineering. Thank you for embarking on this journey with us. We trust that you will find this book both informative and inspiring, fueling your passion for electric scooters and their role in revolutionizing urban mobility.

In her introduction, Grace Lees-Maffei explores the idea of iconicity and what makes a design 'iconic', and fifty essays by leading design and cultural critics address the development of each iconic 'thing', its innovative and unique qualities, and its journey to classic status. Subjects range from the late 19th century to the present day, and include the Sydney Opera House, the Post-It Note, Coco Chanel's classic suit, the Sony WalkmanTM, Hello KittyTM, Helvetica, the Ford Model T, Harry Beck's diagrammatic map of the London Underground and the Apple iMac G3. This handsome volume provides a treasure trove of 'stories' that will shed new light on the iconic designs that we use without thinking, aspire to possess, love or hate (or love to hate) and which form part of the fabric of our everyday lives.

This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the UK some 11.5m people already live with a recognised disability and more than a fifth of them experience some difficulty when using transport networks. So it's essential that the Department for Transport delivers an ambitious Accessibility Action Plan. Changes made ahead of the 2012 Paralympic Games delivered access for disabled people to significantly more parts of the public transport network for the first time and highlighted the immense value of such improvements for all. Yet a year later, there is a risk that some of the momentum from London 2012 is being lost because further key accessibility improvements planned have been watered-down or abandoned. The Committee's recommendations include: imposing penalties on bus operators who claim to offer accessible routes but then fail to provide accessible buses; the phased introduction of audio-visual information systems on all buses over the next ten years; phasing out the need for disabled travellers having to book organised assistance in advance; financial incentives to encourage investment in fully accessible vehicles by taxi and private care hire vehicle operators; and a change to EU rules so that in future airlines are required to allow carers to travel free of charge when the airline judges a disabled person incapable of travelling independently. The Cabinet Office should convene a working group of ministers and officials to improve cross-government working on accessibility in order to secure the full benefits to be gained from widening disabled people's access to employment and training, healthcare and wider participation in all parts of society
