Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mismatch between user demand and service supply creates a congestion in mobile wireless networks. The literature has a strong evidence that user behavior is highly predictable. Service Providers (SPs) can track, learn and predict user demand and mobility patterns. Taking advantage of user demand predictability allows SPs to smooth out the network load. Caching some of the data items in the off-peak times shifts some of the network load and reduces the incurred service cost. Moreover, the Device-to-Device (D2D) communication allows users to share their proactive downloads with other users in their neighborhood. Therefore, users find their request either in their local cache or with other users around them. Nevertheless, harnessing the information about user mobility enhances SP's caching decisions and reduces the incurred service cost. The information about users trajectories allows the SP to predict their presence in some popular locations, which experience high demand levels. Finding an optimal caching strategy alleviates the network congestion in these locations and improves the network performance. This dissertation introduces a study to extend the capabilities of D2D caching networks and investigates how to enhance its performance. The research consists of three main directions: (1) exploiting user behavior predictability to smooth out the network load, (2) leveraging the relations between users to introduce a content trading marketplace, and (3) leveraging the information about user mobility to enhance the caching strategy. We start by investigating how to exploit the user behavior predictability to cache some data contents during off-peak times for a future possible request during peak times. This part of the research creates a benchmark that allows us to evaluate the performance of the proposed models. We compare the gains achieved by this proactive caching scheme with the flat pricing scenario. The gains achieved later, by content trading and mobility-aware D2D caching networks, are compared with the gains of this proactive caching scheme. Further, we highlight how to leverage the relations between users demand to introduce another benefit of the cached data items. Predicting users requests for peak times, correlated with the SP smart pricing, guides them to proactively cache some data contents during off-peak times. Moreover, users are equipped with D2D communication and SP helps them by announcing some anonymous information about users demand. This motivates the SP to hold a marketplace where users can trade their proactive downloads. Remarkably, we show that an appropriate manipulation of this marketplace allows the SP to maximize its profit, while users minimize their payments, and an equilibrium can be attained. Our research plan extends to shed light on the impact of user mobility on the caching decision. We consider both centralized and decentralized caching schemes. Users carry cached data while they are moving and share it at the popular locations using the D2D communication. Most of the users demand are served through the D2D communication which alleviates the network congestion in these locations. This model allows users to minimize their payment while the SP minimizes the incurred service cost and hence achieves a higher profit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide popularity of wireless devices and their data-enabled applications have created an evolving marketplace for digital content ecosystems. A common operation in those ecosystems is to disseminate content in a cost-optimal manner. With the conventional download model, a user downloads content directly from a Content Provider's (CP) server via a Communication Service Provider's (CSP) network. Downloading content through CSP's network involves a cost, which must be paid either by End Consumers (EC) or the CP. The main objective of the thesis is to provide caching mechanisms that minimizes the overall provisioning cost in different network topologies. This is implemented by caching right objects in data-enabled mobile devices such as smartphones, smart pads, vehicles and novel edge devices. In this thesis, several number of existing caching strategies are studied. Then, an incentive based cooperative content caching framework is developed for both fully-connected Social Wireless Networks (SWNETs) and mobile wireless networks in which content demands are hierarchically heterogeneous. Furthermore, a D2D cooperative caching framework is proposed for streaming video with heterogeneous quality demands in SWNETs. This caching framework contains two main components: a value-based caching strategy in which the value of caching a streaming video segment is defined for given pricing and video sharing models, and an Adaptive Quality (AQ) provisioning algorithm that minimizes the overall video content provisioning cost within an SWNET. Additionally, a vehicular content caching mechanism is developed for disseminating navigational maps while minimizing cellular network bandwidth usage. The key concept is to collaboratively cache the dynamic components of navigational maps in roadside units (RSUs) and vehicles such that the majority of dissemination can be accomplished using V2V and V2I communication links. Moreover, a novel caching mechanism is proposed which is based on Connectionless Edge Cache Servers in vehicular networks. The goal is to intelligently cache content within the vehicles and the edge servers so that majority of the vehicle-requested content can be obtained from those caches, thus minimizing the amount of cellular network usage needed for fetching content from a central server. A notable feature of the cache servers in this work is that they do not have backhaul connectivity. This makes the connectionless servers to be relatively less expensive compared to the usual Roadside Service Units (RSUs), and potentially moveable in response to specific events that are expected to generate content in large volumes. Finally, a list of future work on this topic is compiled that includes: 1) developing machine learning models for predicting content demand and spatiotemporal localities of node movements, 2) developing mechanisms for edge cache server placement for performance optimization, and 3) analyzing the impacts of selfishness on the performance of caching.

Book excerpt: While the mobile networks are evolving to a content-centric paradigm, the surging traffic demands keep stressing the ever-increasing network capacities. In-network caching offers an effective means to alleviate the traffic pressure by saving bandwidth utilization and balancing traffic loads. In this thesis, we first introduced an integrated content distribution framework that integrates universal in-network caching and enables collaboration across domains. This framework takes advantage of appealing design principles in device-to-device (D2D) communications, mobile edge computing (MEC), network function virtualization (NFV), and software-defined networking (SDN). Leveraging this framework, we studied the request screening problem, which aims to appropriately select the video requests offloaded to energy-efficient D2D communications. We redirected content requests to maximize the coverage of requests that can be fulfilled through D2D communications. Given the constraints of individual transmission and caching capacities, the number of available D2D channels, and information privacy with social-awareness, we can decouple the screening problem into two subproblems, i.e., the device caching and matching problem, and the D2D channel allocation problem. As we proved that both problems are NP-hard, we proposed social-aware heuristic algorithms that iteratively make the best offloading decision in each step. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms perform fairly closely to optimal solutions in small-scale instances and outperform the reference schemes under various situations. Then, we studied the request routing problem, which selects sources and redirects video streams appropriately to optimize in-network flows. We proposed a context-aware approach for request routing through the integrated edge-core. The results demonstrate that the proposed solution achieves significant performance gain over the reference schemes in exploiting network dynamics and user context to relieve network congestion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green communications is a very hot topic. As mobile networks evolve in terms of higher rates/throughput, a consequent impact on operating costs is due to (aggregate) network energy consumption. As such, design on 4G networks and beyond have increasingly started to focus on `energy efficiency’ or so-called ‘green’ networks. Many techniques and solutions have been proposed to enhance the energy efficiency of mobile networks, yet no book has provided an in-depth analysis of the energy consumption issues in mobile networks nor has detailed theories, tools and solutions for solving the energy efficiency problems. This book presents the techniques and solutions for enhancing energy efficiency of future mobile networks, and consists of three major parts. The first part presents a general description of mobile network evolution in terms of both capacity and energy efficiency. The second part discusses the advanced techniques to green mobile networks. The third part discusses the solutions that enhance mobile network energy efficiency as well as provides future directions. Whilst the reader is expected to have basic knowledge of wireless communications, the authors present a brief introduction of the evolution of mobile networks, providing the knowledge base for understanding the content of the book. In addition, complicated network problems are illustrated using simple examples. This will help the reader understand the concept and intuition of various techniques and solutions. Incorporates the latest research results from both academia and industry, providing an up-to-date overview of existing technologies and solutions on making mobile networks greener Consists of three sections with a gradually increasing technical depth on green mobile networks, providing the reader with a systematic view of the research area, and helping those with different technical backgrounds to better understand the content Covers existing enabling technologies for green mobile networking, including an innovative discussion of state-of-the-art solutions and algorithms

This book was released on 2017 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Device-to-device (D2D) communication is a promising approach to optimize the utilization of air interface resources in 5G networks, since it allows decentralized proximity-based communication. To obtain caching gains through D2D, mobile nodes must possess content that other mobiles want. Thus, devising intelligent cache placement techniques are essential for D2D. The goal of this dissertation is to provide randomized spatial models for content distribution in cellular networks by capturing the locality of the content, and additionally, to provide dynamic content placement algorithms exploiting the node configurations. First, a randomized content caching scheme for D2D networks in the cellular context is proposed. Modeling the locations of the devices as a homogeneous Poisson Point Process (PPP), the probability of successful content delivery in the presence of interference and noise is derived. With some idealized modeling aspects, i.e., given that (i) only a fraction of users to be randomly scheduled at a given time, and (ii) the request distribution does not change over time, it has been shown that the performance of caching can be optimized by smoothing out the request distribution, where the smoothness of the caching distribution is mainly determined by the path loss exponent, and holds under Rayleigh, Ricean and Nakagami fading models. Second, to take the randomized caching model a step further, a spatially correlated content caching scenario is contemplated. Inspired by the Matérn hard-core point process of type II, which is a first-order pairwise interaction model, D2D nodes caching the same file are never closer to each other than the exclusion radius. The exclusion radius plays the role of a substitute for caching probability. The optimal exclusion radii that maximize the hit probability can be determined by using the request distribution and cache memory size. Unlike independent content placement, which is oblivious to the geographic locations of the nodes, the new strategy can be effective for proximity-based communication even when the cache size is small. Third, an auction-aided Matérn carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) policy that considers the joint analysis of scheduling and caching is studied. The auction scheme is distributed. Given a cache configuration, i.e., the set of cached files in each user at a given snapshot, each D2D receiver determines the value of its request, by bidding on the set of potential transmitters in its communication range. The values of the receiver bids are reported to the potential transmitter, which computes the cumulated sum of these variables taken on all users in its cell. The potential transmitter then reports the value of the bid sum to other potential transmitters in its contention range. Given the accumulated bids of all potential transmitters, the contention range and the medium access probability, a fraction of the potential transmitters are jointly scheduled, determined by the auction policy, in order to optimize the throughput. Later, a Gibbs sampling-based cache update strategy is proposed to iteratively optimize the hit rate by taking the scheduling scheme into account. In this dissertation, a variety of distributed algorithms for D2D content caching are proposed. Our results indicate that the geographic locality and the network parameters have a significant role in determining and optimizing the placement strategy. Exploiting the user interactions and spatial diversity, and incentivizing cooperation among D2D nodes are crucial in realizing the full potential of caching. Furthermore, from a network point of view, the scheduling and the caching phases are closely linked to each other. Hence, understanding the interaction between these two phases helps develop novel dynamic caching strategies capturing the temporal and spatial locality of the demand.

Book excerpt: Content distribution, i.e., distributing digital content from one node to another node or multiple nodes, is the most fundamental function of the Internet. Since Amazon’s launch of EC2 in 2006 and Apple’s release of the iPhone in 2007, Internet content distribution has shown a strong trend toward polarization. On the one hand, considerable investments have been made in creating heavyweight, integrated data centers (“heavy-cloud”) all over the world, in order to achieve economies of scale and high flexibility/efficiency of content distribution. On the other hand, end-user devices (“light-end”) have become increasingly lightweight, mobile and heterogeneous, creating new demands concerning traffic usage, energy consumption, bandwidth, latency, reliability, and/or the security of content distribution. Based on comprehensive real-world measurements at scale, we observe that existing content distribution techniques often perform poorly under the abovementioned new circumstances. Motivated by the trend of “heavy-cloud vs. light-end,” this book is dedicated to uncovering the root causes of today’s mobile networking problems and designing innovative cloud-based solutions to practically address such problems. Our work has produced not only academic papers published in prestigious conference proceedings like SIGCOMM, NSDI, MobiCom and MobiSys, but also concrete effects on industrial systems such as Xiaomi Mobile, MIUI OS, Tencent App Store, Baidu PhoneGuard, and WiFi.com. A series of practical takeaways and easy-to-follow testimonials are provided to researchers and practitioners working in mobile networking and cloud computing. In addition, we have released as much code and data used in our research as possible to benefit the community.
