Ces formes sont le contraire de ce que l'on peut assimiler à des stratégies de "libre choix" ou à des expressions d'une individualité moderne. Une des particularités des contributions présentées ici est d'analyser diverses formes de mobilité spatiale, tant régionales qu'à travers des exemples classiques de migration européenne, non seulement en fonction de leurs effets économiques sur l'individu et la collectivité d'origine mais aussi des implications locales et régionales qu'elles génèrent. L'objectif de cet ouvrage est ainsi d'attirer l'attention sur le fait que ces mouvements présentent un potentiel inhérent de changement et de développement. Les textes ont été rédigés à partir des communications présentées à un atelier de travail interdisciplinaire financé par la Fondation allemande pour la Recherche (DFG), à Bamako en février 2011. Des études empiriques sur l'espace Sahara-Sahel y ont été mises en lumière dans une perspective "vue de loin", qui compare les conditions politiques et administratives des mobilités en Afrique de l'Ouest et en Amérique latine. S'y ajoute une perspective "vue de près" qui suggère une conception de la mobilité inspirée de celle des nomades sahélo-sahariens et non de celle des voyageurs occidentaux modernes."--P. Et s'il y a un trait qui caractérise ses habitants, c'est bien leur mobilité. Ce trait justifie l'appellation d'" espace en mouvement" utilisée ici par plusieurs auteurs. Le fait d'en souligner l'unité historico-culturelle et socio-économique est une autre originalité de la publication. Cette idée d'unité contraste avec l'image, pourtant plus répandue, d'une région " entre-deux ", située entre les deux aires géographiques que sont l'Afrique du Nord et l'Afrique subsaharienne. A côté du trait commun de la mobilité, qui rend sujette à question la dichotomie supposée entre nomadisme et sédentarité, les différentes populations de cet espace sont liées en réalité par de multiples relations dans les domaines économique, politique et culturel. Aboutissement d'un colloque qui s'est tenu à Berlin en 2005, les contributions de cet ouvrage développent l'idée que l'unité de l'espace Sahara-Sahel se manifeste avant tout dans les centres urbains et à travers les interactions entre migrants et citadins sédentaires. Les auteurs se sont cependant concentrés sur certains des habitants de la ville, ceux dont le potentiel à façonner les formes urbaines est limité ou n'a pas encore été pris en considération par les chercheurs. Il s'agit notamment des femmes, des jeunes, des nouveaux arrivés ou des gens de passage. A côté des modalités du travail et d'habitation, l'intérêt a porté sur la différence ou l'étrangeté (Fremdheit), sur les manières de les vivre et de les représenter, ou bien de les dissimuler ou de les surmonter.

The study analyses the Greater Accra city dwellers residential practices, and focuses on two main factors influencing land and rental markets. On the one hand, it interrogates the constraints and dynamics of urban families, their needs and gender characteristics in terms of accommodation. On the other hand, it explores the opportunities and interests in investment on the part of land owners and real estate developers. At these two levels of describing the social and spatial discriminations, the book attempts to explain the difficult choices that this fragmented city faces. It emphasizes the role of mobility in structuring the metropolitan area, and the negative impact of lack of mobility which results in some households and communities suffering more than others. Light is thrown on diagnostics and prospects in the matter of urban planning.

This book offers an explanation for this phenomenon that is based on close analysis of the contradictory economic and political agendas that create and constrain labour migration. It shows how global capitalism regulates different stages of the process within an interconnected system of economic dispossession, the construction of an illegal status, border control, labour exploitation and processes of underdevelopment. This is summarised as a regime of ‘unfree labour mobility’. Combined with structural and historical approaches, this book is based on ethnographic research. It incorporates those who are left behind, those who decide to stay, migrants who fail and those who are on the move, alongside clustered migrant communities in Senegal, Mauritania and Spain. The book’s panoramic approach shows how West African ‘step-wise’ journeys to Europe by land and sea sees competing territorial and economic policies regulating an unstable and unpredictable trajectory, creating ‘illegal’ labour through dual logics of border security and selective labour mobility. This book demonstrates that the diverse channels through which people migrate in the modern era are mediated by European states and labour markets, which utilise border regimes to control labour and be globally competitive. Book excerpt: The doctrine of international relations (inter-state, indeed), territorial ideologies, the logic of autochthony and its ramifications, ethnic cleansing, are all hinged at different levels upon the same pseudo-fact: to every society a closed and exclusive territory demarcated by fixed and linear borders. This way of thinking, totally foreign to African societies for a long time, has generated today more contradictions than it can ever solve. The authors of this book make a clear distinction between territory formation "from the top" as being a deliberate political project, and its formation "from below" as being a more diffused historical process which is determined by the scheme of antagonisms and compromises between social forces. In lieu of a stark opposition between "the top" and "below", the authors unveil the interdependence and mutual influence which form the basis of a dual system within which legal formation -by the colonial authorities first, then by the postcolonial one- is confronted with a host of subaltern spatial dynamics, neglecting thereby the legitimacy which only them can provide.
