The possibility of exploiting existing static analysis techniques suggests that having functions at the core of mobile code language is a particularly apt choice. A range of problems which have impact on the safety, security and performance are discussed. It is shown that types extended with effects and other annotations can capture a significant amount of information about the dynamic behavior of mobile functions, and offer solutions to the problems under investigation. This book includes a survey of the languages Concurrent ML, Facile and PLAN which inherit the strengths of the functional paradigm in the context of concurrent and distributed computation. The languages which are defined in the subsequent chapters have their roots in these languages.

The possibility of exploiting resources on a global scale has given rise to a new paradigm -- the mobile computation paradigm -- for computation in large-scale distributed networks. Languages which enable the mobility of code over the network are becoming widely used for building distributed applications. This thesis explores distributed computation with languages which adopt functions as the main programming abstraction and support code mobility through the mobility of functions between remote sites. It aims to highlight the benefits of using languages of this family in dealing with the challenges of mobile computation. The possibility of exploiting existing static analysis techniques suggests that having functions at the core of a mobile code language is a particularly apt choice. A range of problems which have impact on the safety, security and performance of systems are discussed here. It is shown that types extended with effects and other annotations can capture a significant amount of information about the dynamic behaviour of mobile functions and offer solutions to the problems under investigation. The thesis presents a survey of the languages Concurrent ML, Facile and PLAN which remain loyal to the principles of the functional language ML and hence inherit its strengths in the context of concurrent and distributed computation. The languages which are defined in the subsequent chapters have their roots in these languages. Two chapters focus on using types to statically predict whether functions are used locally or may become mobile at runtime. Types are exploited for distributed calltracking to estimate which functions are invoked at which sites in the system. Compilers for mobile code languages would benefit from such estimates in dealing with the heterogeneity of the network nodes, in providing static profiling tools and in estimating the resource-consumption of programs. Two chapters are devoted to the use of types in controlling the flow of values in a system where users have different trust levels. The confinement of values within a specified mobility region is the subject of one of these. The other focuses on systems where values are classified with respect to their confidentiality level. The sources of undesirable flows of information are identified and a solution based on noninterference is proposed.

Chapter 2 follows mobile IP, the extension of the Internet Protocol (IP) into the mobile domain. Ad-hoc networks with their requirements for specific routing protocols are also covered. The subsequent layer, the transport layer, is covered in Chapter 2. This chapter discusses several approaches of adapting the current transmission control protocol (TCP), which is well known from the Internet, to the special requirements of mobile communication systems. Chapter 3 comprises the global system for mobile communications (GSM) as today's most successful public mobile phone system, cordless phone technology, trunked radios, and the future development with the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS). Chapter 4 follows the classical layers of communication systems and explains the basics of wireless technology from a computer science point of view. Topics in this chapter are signal propagation, multiplexing, and modulation. Profound electrical engineering knowledge is not required; however, it is necessary to comprehend the basic principles of wireless transmission to understand the design decisions of higher layer communication protocols and applications. Chapter 5 and 6 depicts that Ad hoc networks are a key to the evolution of wireless networks. They are typically composed of equal nodes that communicate over wireless links without any central control. Ad hoc wireless networks inherit the traditional problems of wireless and mobile communications, such as bandwidth optimization, power control, and transmission quality enhancement. Chapter 7 discusses handoff, which is the mechanism for transferring an ongoing call from one base station to another as a user moves through the coverage area of a cellular system. It must be fast and efficient to prevent the quality of service from degenerating to an unacceptable level. Chapter 8 reviews existing solutions to the location management problem. Chapter 9 introduces mobile number portability. We describe and analyze number portability routing mechanisms and their implementation costs. We first describe the Signaling Relay Function based solution for call-related and non-call-related routing. Chapter 10 surveys data management schemes in wireless mobile environments. Mobile computing can possibly be viewed as a variation of traditional distributed computing from the data management point of view. In general, there are two possible scenarios.

We had an extremely short time to organize the event, but many people joined us and enthusiastically contributed to the process. The success of the workshop is wholly due to the hard work of the organizing committee, members of the program committee, key speakers, speakers from industry, and authors of accepted papers. The workshop consisted of invited and regular paper presentations, followed by discussions, on many important current and emerging topics ranging from sheduling and load balancing to grids. The key speakers devoted their time and efforts to presenting the most interesting results of their research groups, and we all thank them for this . All papers were peer reviewed by two or three reviewers.
