Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: A, Kenyatta University, language: English, abstract: This paper explores the impact of new technology and mobile banking in the entire financial sector in Africa. The paper focuses on the case of Standard Bank South Africa to assist in understanding the challenges faced by the major commercial banks in adopting new banking technologies in less developed worlds, such as Africa. To realize the primary goal of this paper, the researcher discusses how technology can help Standard Bank to move forward in the aftermath of the 2008/9 financial crisis and the new opportunities for the bank to grow its financial service businesses. Furthermore, the research suggests how new technological applications in the financial services sector can help Africans to escape poverty and if diversification is appropriate for a diverse bank, such as Standard Bank. Technology has immensely transformed business-to-business and within business transactions and interactions. Technological applications are enabling reconfiguration of design, production, marketing, and service delivery in most businesses. For instance, the design reconfigurations have allowed for the implementation of online marketplaces, mobile business activities, such as mobile banking, and better risk assessment. In the emerging financial markets of Africa, disruptive market innovations and reconstituted value chains have become key drivers of the growingfinancial services industry. Despite the huge benefits of financial innovations, conventional financial services providers, such as banks, finance companies, microfinance institutions, and insurance must be wary of the new risks and challenges posed by these financial technologies. For a major bank like the Standard Bank, financial innovations, such as e-banking and mobile banking present both new opportunities and threats to its core businesses.

Book excerpt: As observed in many countries, mobile banking can revolutionize the practice of payment transactions. This is especially true for developing countries, where mobile banking has the potential to open non-cash banking services to the unbanked. However, unlike in countries like Kenya and Ghana, in Ethiopia, people still seem to be reluctant to use mobile banking, despite existing platforms availed by Ethiopian commercial banks like Dashen Bank and United Bank. In this paper, we explore the reasons for such reluctance with the help of the technology acceptance model (TAM) and modifications proposed by the literature that are particularly adequate for developing countries and mobile banking: the theory of trying (TT) and the concept of attitude strengths. In our sample of 394 mobile banking subscribers of Dashen Bank and United Bank, we find that a person's attitude is key for the acceptance of mobile banking and that attitude can be best explained by combining the elements of TT with the TAM. As a consequence, to foster mobile banking in Ethiopia, banks are advised to improve potential users' attitude, especially, taking into account the users' learning process and the systems' ease of use.

The researcher therefore think using the SERVQUAL model (MiykelSisaye)model would be a contribution to existing research mobile banking context. This is the current research gap and in order to fill the gap, the researcher was try to measure service quality and customer satisfaction, The study aimed at examining the effect of five online banking service quality dimensions on the customers satisfaction in the case of CBE. Primary data was collected for the analysis based on five points Likert scale from 396 sample respondents who are customers of CBE online banking services. The data was coded and analyzed using SPSS version 25 software. The reliability of the instrument was checked using Cronbach's alpha test. The data analysis employed both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The descriptive statistics was used for summarizing the background of respondents and computing average score of CBE on each dimensions of service quality and customers satisfaction. Correlation and multiple regression analysis were conducted to examine the relationship between the dependent and independent variables.

Most of published studies on information systems have been conducted in developed countries, with little in developing or less developed countries. From those few, there was no one focusing in Vietnam. This book examines the experiences of 7 Vietnamese SMEs when they adopted ISs. The authors investigated the reasons for, the process of, and the factors influencing information system adoption. The qualitative research method was used to answer research questions. Semi-structured interviews, content analysis and open coding were used as the data collection and analysis tool to explore participants' experiences. The analysis resulted in important findings. It confirmed some reasons and factors found in the literature concerning information system adoption in Vietnamese small and medium enterprises. Despite some similarities, the authors found some differences, such as government role, concerning the information system adoption. The results confirmed some factors and reasons, but also brought up some new ones. We suggest, therefore, some further studies on those.

The role played by nonbanking actors including telecoms and FinTech firms as well as other participants, such as PayPal and Amazon, in developing and deploying innovative financial and payment services is undeniable. Peer2peer (P2P) payments from nonbank services are becoming increasingly commonplace and will shortly be codified by EC (EU?) regulations requiring banks to provide access to consumer data for third-party app developers and service providers. Three major mobile financial systems--mobile banking, mobile payments, and branchless banking--currently dominate the electronic retail banking sector. Although interconnected and interrelated, their business models, regulatory frameworks, and target markets are distinct. This book provides a unified perspective on MFS and discusses its evolution, growth, and future, as well as identifying the frameworks, stakeholders, and technologies used in financial information systems in general and MFS in particular. Academics and researchers in digital and financial marketing will find this book an invaluable resource, as will bank executives, regulators, policy makers, FinTech professionals, and anyone interested in how mobile technology, social media and financial services will increasingly intersect.

Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Finland was the first country in the world to have taken a lead in E-banking. In India, it was ICICI Bank which initiated E-banking as early as 1997 under the brand name Infinity. Electronic banking (E-banking) is a generic term encompassing internet banking, telephone banking, mobile banking etc. In other words, it is a process of delivery of banking services and products through electronic channels such as telephone, internet, cell phone etc. The concept and scope of E-banking is still evolving. E-banking facilitates an effective payment and accounting system thereby enhancing the speed of delivery of banking services considerably. While E-banking has improved efficiency and convenience, it has also posed several challenges to the regulators and supervisors. Several initiatives taken by the Government of India as well as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have facilitated the development of E-banking in India. The Government of India enacted the IT Act, 2000 with effect from October 17, 2000, which provides legal recognition to electronic transactions and other means of electronic commerce. The RBI has been gearing up to upgrading itself as a regulator and supervisor of the technologically dominated financial system. It issued guidelines on risks and control in computer and telecommunication system in February 1998 to all the banks advising them to evaluate the risks inherent in the systems and put in place adequate control mechanisms to address these risks, which can be broadly put under three heads, viz. IT environment risks, IT operations risks and product risks. The existing regulatory framework over banks has also been extended to E-banking. It covers various issues that fall within the framework of technology, security standards and legal and regulatory issues. This book contains 12 articles by scholars specialising in the area of banking. It will be useful for all those who want to understand recent technological developments in Indian banking.

Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper reviews the evolution of inequality in Ethiopia and discusses the role of various macroeconomic policies as well as structural factors. With a Gini coefficient of 30, Ethiopia remains among the most egalitarian countries in the world. The most vulnerable households seem to experience less benefit from growth than those in the higher income deciles. In terms of tax revenue collection, Ethiopia faces the typical challenges of a developing country. It is required that Ethiopia builds on its successful experience with the Productive Safety Net Program to address the growing needs of the urban poor.
